Museum of Ventura County update for May 16

Major funding for these programs is made possible by the

The popular appeal of comic book art is the focus of Black and White and Read All Over, a new exhibit opening May 18at the Museum of Ventura County. The Museum will host an opening reception, 6 to 8 p.m. in the Huntsinger Gallery, 100 E Main Street, Ventura.
The exhibit presents work by local and regional artists who shaped the development of the American comic strip and comic book during the past century, including:
  • Jack Kirby, a former resident of Thousand Oaks, is widely regarded as one of the comic book industry’s major innovators and is best known for his work on Marvel’s Captain America and Silver Surfer.
  • Patrick McHale, a former resident of Ojai, is an Emmy Award winning writer, artist, animator and filmmaker.
  • Sergio Aragones, a cartoonist for MAD Magazine and resident of Ojai, is known as the creator of his comic book, Groo the Wanderer.
  • The Hernandez Brothers, born and raised in Oxnard, hit the alternative comic book scene in 1981 with their black and white comic, Love and Rockets.
  • Lalo Alcaraz, known as the author of the first nationally syndicated, politically themed, Latino comic strip, La Cucaracha.
Admission to the opening reception is free for members; $5 for nonmembers. A no-host bar will be available. The exhibit will run May 18 through August 26. For more information, visit venturamuseum.org or call 805-653-0323.

The Museum of Ventura County will host the opening a new exhibit, Natural State, 6 to 8 p.m., May 18, featuring the work of the Museum’s first artist-in-residence Ryan Carr.
Showcasing the natural beauty of Southern California, Carr’s large scale paintings and drawings focus on the invasive species of plants along the Ventura River, the Channel Islands and other areas of Ventura County.
Unique wallpaper created by the artist will be installed, as well as a floral installation that speaks to Carr’s work and adds depth to the exhibit.
Located at 100 Main Street, Ventura,Natural State will be on display at the Museum through August 12.

Two-time Grammy Winner Laurence Juber, lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings and Finger-Style Guitarist of the Year, will present a fundraising concert to benefit theVentura County Book Mobile, May 19 at the Museum of Ventura County.
Social hour: 6:30 p.m.; Concert: 7:30 p.m.

Colorful sculptures created by Danish artist Helle Scharling-Todd explore “the dramas of being human, where we all somehow are finding solace in the idea of being connected.” A resident of Ventura, Scharling-Todd’s inspired works in glass, tiles and steel stimulate the viewer’s mind and senses. The Museum of Ventura Countywill host its annual Wearable Art Fashion Show June 2 at the Museum’s Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Pavilion, 100 E Main Street, Ventura.
“Wearing Our Stories: Rising from the Ashes” focuses on stitching together the stories of courage amid destruction and mending the devastation left behind by the Thomas Fire.
The challenge for artists, artisans and community members is to tell their stories through an article of clothing or accessories designed for this wearable art show.
Artwork by local artist John Stevenson will provide the backdrop for the fashion show. Show will include designers Brecia Kralovic-Logan, Aimee French, Christine Leong, Janice Chan, Elaine Unziker and Greta Lovina. Pieces range from handmade jewelry to a wedding dress.
A VIP pre-reception will be held at 6 p.m. for VIP ticket holders.
General admission doors open at 6:45 and the fashion show begins at 7 p.m.
General admission ticket prices are $45 for non-members, $40 for members; VIP tickets are $75 for non-members, $70 for members.
VIP includes pre-reception with appetizers and one drink ticket.
