Dear Museum supporter,
As more businesses are allowed to open in California and Ventura County, the Museum of Ventura County plans to open gradually as we continue to offer current online services and launch new programs like our Journal Flashback and Local History Happy Hour series, which you can read more about in this newsletter.
When we do re-open, you will get to see improved gardens and galleries along with new exhibits, public art installations, and family programs at both sites.
And in recognition of your support over the last year, we are excited to announce that admission at all sites will be FREEfor all of 2021!
Important Dates:
Thursday, June 3, 2021: Gardens in both Santa Paula and Ventura will open.
Saturday, June 12, 2021: Dedication of the newly redone Boroughs Childrens’ Garden.
Thursday, July 1, 2021: Galleries will open.
2021 Gardens and Galleries Hours: Thursday – Sunday, 11AM—5PM.
We will continue to provide the online programs (puzzles, historical articles, virtual exhibits, lectures and discussions, etc.) that so many of you have enjoyed during the closure of the museum sites.
The generosity of our vibrant community is sustaining us until we are able to reopen. Consider becoming an MVC Member or making a gift today.
Dive Into Our New
Journal Flashback Series
Welcome to our new Journal Flashback series. This series will focus on previously published articles, snippets and historical gold nuggets from the MVC Quarterlies dating back several decades of publications.
William Vandever:
Ventura’s First Congressman
The first congressman to reside in Ventura was a man of both national achievement and local dedication. A hero of the War Between the States, he moved to California which had lured several other veterans of general rank who were attracted by the state’s unusual spirit, geography and promise. For William Vandever the way to Ventura was long and roundabout.
Bill Soo-Hoo:
Mayor of Oxnard
Oxnard was known as a “Soo Hoo town,” so it was no surprise that Soo Hoo Yee Tom moved his small family to the Chinese community there in 1920. Four years later his son William, known as Bill, was born. During his life Bill Soo Hoo achieved extraordinary political and professional success. In 1966 Bill was elected mayor of the City of Oxnard, and his elevation to public office marked several milestones.

New Episode of
The Hobson Smith Family Legacy
The Museum of Ventura County’s Bridge Builder Award celebrates the accomplishments of leaders who have made significant impact on the region — those who have changed the fabric of our community, creating a new and better future. In 2020 and 2021, the Museum of Ventura County honors the extended families and descendants of Isabel Winemiller and William Dewey Hobson.
In this 4-part video series, the Museum of Ventura County celebrates the accomplishments of this incredible family, now in its seventh generation.
The Hobson Family Legacy: Ep. 3 - The Legacy Continues
Episode 3—The Legacy Continues: The late William Arthur Hobson’s daughter, Edith May, married Walter Henry Hoffman, Jr., who held a degree in Agricultural Science and had worked at the Hobson Bros. store in Ventura.
Shortly thereafter in 1917, Abram Lincoln Hobson’s daughter, Grace, married Fred Wildon Smith, the same year that he joined the Hobson Bros. Packing Company.
The significant impact that these two couples had on Ventura County and beyond, is very much alive today. In this installment, we are visiting the accomplishments and the lives of Edith & Walter Hoffman, and Grace & Fred W. Smith.
The Hobsons, Hoffmans, and Smiths lifelong goals of community service, preserving and celebrating the past, and embracing the latest in modern technology to increase efficiency of business, served them, and the community well.
Major funding for these programs is made possible by the City of
San Buenaventura, the County of Ventura and private and community donors.
