May 26 — ‘2017 Indigenous Knowledge Conference’ to be held at Oxnard College

OXNARD — The Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) and Centro Binacional para el Desarollo Indígena Oaxaqueño (CBDIO) will host their fifth annual “Indigenous Knowledge Conference” on Friday, May 26th at the Oxnard College Performing Arts Center from 9 am -4 pm.

Our conference will include a panel group, workshops and guest speakers, focusing on the indigenous Mexican community and immigration in the United States. We are excited to announce that this year’s guest speakers are:

  • Yosimar Reyes, a nationally acclaimed poet, educator, performance artist and public speaker
  • UCLA professor, Dr. Gaspar Rivera-Salgado will share his expertise about labor, social justice and immigration issues
  • UCSC Program Coordinator, Dr. Elizabeth Gonzalez will speak about the psychological and academic adjustments for immigrant Latino/as living in the US.
  • Nurse Practitioner, Sandy Young will provide an insight about immigration’s impacts on indigenous’ health, language access and the importance of health advocacy.

The Indigenous Knowledge Conference begins with breakfast and features a traditional Oaxacan lunch, amidst a day of workshops presented by indigenous academics and community leaders, who speak intimately about their life in the United States, and other experts in the field of immigration, health and education.

The Indigenous Knowledge Conference will be held at Oxnard College, located at 4000 Rose Ave. in Oxnard, CA. Tickets are $80 each, including breakfast and lunch.
