SANTA MARIA — If you don’t like the movies at a local theatre, make your own. That’s exactly what Righetti and a few other local high school film students have done.
The 22ndAnnual RHS Film Festival is scheduled from 7 p.m. to about 9:30 p.m. or 10 p.m. on May 10thand 11thinside the Warrior gym. $5 for students and $8 for adults. All the films are “G” rated as the event is planned for all ages.
The celebration for cinematic achievement features awards given for best director, editor, screenplay, cinematography, best of show, audience choice, and teacher’s choice. This year’s flicks, totaling 22 short films, include comedies, music videos, narratives, a documentary and others.
As always, the festival will feature movie tickets, popcorn and other goodies to complete the exciting atmosphere.
The student-produced festival teaches the skills needed to organize and put on a public event and much more, according to teacher Robert Garcia.
“They learn about commitment, deadlines, storytelling and communication with others outside the classroom,’’ he added. “The students also get to see the fruits of their labor and the reactions from the public.’’
At Righetti, the majority of students in this year’s class are receiving concurrent credit from Allan Hancock College course 110 (Intro to Motion Picture and Video Production), according to Garcia. The concurrent credit partnership between the SMJUHSD and AHC is expanding next year.
