LULAC holding state convention May 20-22

The 64th annual California State Convention of the League of United Latin American Citizens will be held May 20-22 at the Residence Inn Marriott, 2101 Vineyard Ave., Oxnard. Hosted by LULAC District 17.

As part of the conference, a workshop on “Reclaiming our legacy — The fight to save Cultural Studies,” will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at the hotel featuring panelists Rudy Acuña, professor emeritus, CSU Northridge; Chicano activist, author Sean Arce, director of Mexican-American Studies Tucson Unified School District, with moderator Mary Pardo, Chicano Studies Professor at CSU Channel Islands.

Lawmakers in Arizona are seeking to eliminate La Raza Studies in schools statewide.

“The Tucson community is fighting back to save a highly effective program that has almost eradicated the dropout problem among students taking La Raza Studies classes and instill pride in their culture,” according to organizers of the workshop.

LULAC will then present the “Save La Raza Studies Tucson Reception” at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21 at the Residence Inn Marriott. The reception will feature Sean Arce, La Raza Studies Coordinator Tucson.
