July News from People’s Self-Help Housing

eNewsletter | July 2022

Congratulations to PSHH residents in Santa Barbara County on their recent citizenship!
Dear Friend,
July marks the start of our new fiscal year, and looking ahead – what a robust year it will be! Our growing team (200+!) continues to rise to the call of the ongoing  housing crisis. And thanks to such talented individuals, we are well positioned to take our mission to the next level.

An important part of that mission are our resident services. While we have always been a houser, we are now celebrating our 20 year anniversary for providing site-based services too. Both our education and supportive housing programs were born out of specific needs expressed by our residents: help with homework, help with health. Two decades later, while each program has matured, those two basic needs remain at their core.

Originally, the education program was a few parents and a picnic table. Now known as Camino Scholars, it has grown to supporting nearly six hundred students a year. Afterschool homework help for K-8 students is still at its core, but it now also supports high schoolers, vocational and university students, and amazingly its first PhD candidate! Camino Scholars has also garnered national recognition. Last week as part of the National Youth Leadership Institute which convened in Washington D.C., a chance to chat with Congressional leaders, and even the US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona brought accolades and assurances of continued funding.

To continue to create as much area affordable housing as possible is of course critical, but our ability to further impact lives primarily comes through our services. To sustain this work, we count on you and on August 20 we have a really great way for you to do that – The Builder Games! This fun event with live music, barbeque, and raffles will see us cheering on community teams as they build play houses for children. You can find all the details at pshhc.org/buildergames.

Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, produces an annual body of research to which we contribute. The report shares best practices for supportive service programs and concludes that “resident services have great potential…they bridge gaps within a City’s services and promote the health and well-being of residents, and while doing so, uplift entire communities.”

Thank you for all you do for our resident services, every gift you make changes lives and enriches the places we call home.
