We all need to be prepared for a vicious political season ahead. It’s starting to get serious. Two visions for America are beginning to take shape as they prepare to go toe to toe with one another. This will be an epic battle for the destiny of the United States, culminating in the November presidential election. In like manner, the Civil War and subsequent world wars were also arduous struggles that forced us to reevaluate our values and objectives, our character as a nation.
Right now, in the distance, we start to hear what could be described as the muffled roar of the canons, the growing cacophony of artillery, the angry voices, the ghastly sounds of the attacks that are meant to disable and destroy. Such is the political atmosphere in which we currently live and breathe, just as we do every four years, though this coming electoral season promises to be particularly fierce. Somehow it feels as if the country is approaching a precarious moment, as if a gust of wind could send it trundling down one fateful path or another. It’s up to us voters to cast the die that determines our fate and that will set the sails of the homeland as it embarks on its journey into an unsettlingly unpredictable future.
Few Americans have the luxury of sitting out this election. We all stand to gain much and lose much. The question is: What do we want to gain, and what are we willing to lose or reject? There is a question lurking behind this one that is far more important and that should give us considerable pause: What kind of a country do we want to hand over to our children and grandchildren?
Throughout history, American soldiers have been willing to pledge their sacred honor and their very lives for the United States that will be inherited by their offspring. We citizens should be no less willing to simply go out and vote during the next few weeks according to our vision of the America that we wish to impart to the generations coming up behind us.
Let us not fool ourselves. This election will determine our direction as a nation no less than the great wars in our history.

Todos debemos estar preparados para la llegada de una temporada política salvaje. Esto sí empieza a ponerse serio. Dos visiones de Estados Unidos están comenzando a tomar forma mientras se preparan para enfrentarse cara a cara. Esta será una batalla épica por el destino de los Estados Unidos, que culminará en las elecciones presidenciales de noviembre. Asimismo, la Guerra Civil y las posteriores guerras mundiales fueron también arduas luchas que nos obligaron a reevaluar nuestros valores y objetivos, tanto como el carácter de nuestro país.
Ahora mismo, en la distancia, comenzamos a escuchar lo que podría describirse como el rugido amortiguado de los cañones, la creciente cacofonía de la artillería, las voces enojadas, los sonidos espantosos de los ataques que están destinados a inutilizar y destruir. Tal es el clima político en el que vivimos y respiramos actualmente, como lo hacemos cada cuatro años. Sin embargo, esta temporada electoral que se aproxima promete ser bastante feroz. De alguna manera, se siente como si el país se acercara a un momento precario, como si una ráfaga de viento pudiera enviarlo por un camino fatídico o por el otro. Depende de nosotros, los votantes, echar la suerte que determinará nuestro destino y que dirigirá el velero que es nuestra patria hacia un futuro inquietantemente impredecible.
Pocos estadounidenses pueden darse el lujo de no participar en estas elecciones que se avecinan. Todos podemos ganar mucho y perder mucho. La pregunta es: ¿Qué queremos ganar y qué estamos dispuestos a perder o rechazar? Hay una pregunta que acecha detrás de esta que es mucho más importante y que debería hacernos reflexionar profundamente: ¿Qué tipo de país queremos entregar a nuestros hijos y nietos?
A lo largo de la historia, los soldados estadounidenses han estado dispuestos a prometer su sagrado honor y sus propias vidas por estos Estados Unidos que entregan a sus descendientes. Los ciudadanos no deberíamos estar menos dispuestos a simplemente salir y votar durante las próximas semanas de acuerdo con nuestra visión de los Estados Unidos que deseamos transmitir a las generaciones que vienen detrás de nosotros.
No nos engañemos. Esta elección determinará nuestro rumbo como nación no menos que las grandes guerras de nuestra historia.
