GUADALUPE — A close-up study of the ecosystem is underway by fifth-grade students at Kermit McKenzie Intermediate School in Guadalupe.

More than 170 students began by filling jars with water, shells, rocks, a plant, duckweed, pond water, a snail and a shrimp in their classrooms. They wrapped up the lesson with a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Jan. 25.
