First ‘Longevity’ meeting of year set for Jan. 2

VENTURA — A free meeting at which anyone can learn about longevity with good health will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 702 County Square Drive, Ventura, organizers reported in a media release.

This meeting has been conducted regularly in a classroom setting by the group called “Stress, Health and Longevity.” The founder and instructor, Mohammed A. Hasan, a Ventura businessman, has been offering the free classes since 2002 to involve the community. Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation of Ventura has donated the large conference room at 702 County Square Drive for classes. Prior to moving to this venue the classes were held at the Ventura County Star conference room on Ralston Avenue in Ventura until the paper moved to Camarillo.

“Today we can easily access the tremendous amount of knowledge available to live a long life along with good health”, Hasan said. “All we have to do is to join others who are thinking the same way and keep our mind open.”

Hasan said he feels strongly about getting together with like-minded people regularly to achieve the goal. The domino effect of seeing how others solve their problems can be very invigorating for those starting to implement their thoughts in this matter.

This class has had attendance from various sectors of life. Attorneys, dentists, teachers, government officials, journalists, artists, small-business people, and retired individuals have been in attendance. The youngest who has attended the class was 29 and the oldest member of the group is 86. The guest speakers, however, have been older, e.g. Bill Hammaker, 100, or Dr. Rafael Canton, 92. A general goal of the group is to achieve the age of 110 with few ailments.

The classes are held every Wednesday at the same place, same time. Walk-ins are welcome. There are two long recesses during summer and winter. Winter recess ends first of the year and classes restart Jan. 2. Simple forms of exercise and cooking demonstrations are occasionally held at the class. New foods, such as unusual fruit and vegetables are sampled by participants from time to time. Information about vitamins and supplements are normally discussed. Everyone participates in the discussions of a new research finding or a discovery. The whole class participates in complete relaxation techniques or laughter sessions. Hasan has invited anyone who is getting old to attend at least one of the meetings. Commercially available books related to longevity and the human body are reviewed in the group meeting. Stress reduction techniques and natural enhancement of sleep are also covered.

Hasan is the owner of the Ventura firm of Hasan Consultants, which provides services in civil and environmental engineering, transportation and surveying.  He received his undergraduate degree in Karachi and two master’s degrees from the University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa.  Hasan has a California Community College teaching credential which is valid for life. A native of Bangladesh, Hasan came to the U.S. in 1971.  His community activities in Ventura County spans 38 years serving as president of Ventura East Rotary, judge at the Science Fair, Easter Seals Tri-counties, Muscular Dystrophy Association, president of Ventura Trade Club and Consultnet, and other charitable organizations.
