First District Supervisor Das Williams — Helping Seniors Stay Connected

Helping Seniors Stay Connected
I was pleased to join Carpinteria Senior Citizens, Inc. at their annual picnic with a sweet new ride! My office worked to purchase a vehicle from the County’s fleet and donate it to Seniors Inc. so that they can help transport their members to appointments and activities. A recent study from the Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens found that transportation is the number one need among seniors in Santa Barbara County. Being unable to attend social events due to a lack of transportation is strongly correlated with an increase in isolation and poor health outcomes among seniors. The best part is the vehicle is wheelchair-capable!
Sign Up for the Clean Air Day Pledge
For the past six years, the first Wednesday in October has been recognized as Clean Air Day in California. Clean Air Day is our opportunity to take meaningful action for a healthier, cleaner community. On this day, thousands of individuals, businesses, nonprofits, schools, and cities across California come together to improve our air quality by attending Clean Air Day events and taking the Clean Air Day Pledge, created and promoted by the Coalition for Clean Air.

Whether it’s biking, walking, or taking public transit to work, eating vegan or vegetarian for the day, or taking advantage of rebates to electrify your home or vehicle, every small action counts toward cleaner air for everyone.

Individuals, small business owners, nonprofits, cities, schools, and corporations are all encouraged to participate in their own way. There are easy actions you can take from home, school, or work; And when you take the pledge at cleanairday.org/pledge, you’ll get a certificate and shareable graphics to show off your commitment to clean air! Sign up your organization or take the pledge yourself today.

Breaking Ground on a New Building for Probation
Last week the County broke ground on a new headquarters for the Probation Department. The Probation Department is at the bleeding edge of making our criminal justice system more just, and helping rehabilitate those convicted of crimes. The new building also meets high sustainability standards – it will produce more energy than it consumes and will have 20 electric vehicle charging stations in the heart of Downtown Santa Barbara.
