Feb. 7 — SBCC presents: Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Fundraiser

Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros will once again participate in the California Community College Athletic Association’s “Coaches vs. Cancer” initiative, donating all proceeds from this year’s designated event to the American Cancer Society. Members of the community are invited to support the effort by attending a fun night of basketball when the men’s and women’s basketball teams face off against Oxnard College for a doubleheader on Wednesday, February 7. The women’s game will start at 5:00 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 7:00 p.m.

In addition to contests and giveaways during halftime of both games, a special ceremony is planned for 6:40 p.m. to honor Dave Loveton, longtime Sports Information Specialist for SBCC Athletics, and a beloved member of the Santa Barbara athletics community. A UCSB alumnus and Santa Barbara resident since 1979, Dave has for the past twelve years written news stories on all Vaquero sports, served as the “Voice of the Vaqueros,” kept team stats and maintained the award-winning Vaqueros website.

“We chose to honor Dave Loveton in appreciation for everything he has done for the college over the years,” explained SBCC Director of Athletics, Rocco Constantino. “Dave is a tremendously hard worker and has done so much to promote all of the incredible accomplishments of our student-athletes. Dave is a Vaquero through and through. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate way of thanking him for everything he does for SBCC.”

The event will be held in the SBCC Sports Pavilion. Admission is $5 general admission, $3 for students and $3 for seniors.

According to Mr. Constantino, “The Coaches vs. Cancer initiative has been a successful nationwide endeavor for 25 years and we’re very happy to participate again this year. I believe that in college athletics we should use our platform to help our community and those in need.”
