SANTA BARBARA — As local nonprofits are adapting to find new ways to serve their clients and causes, Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) has adjusted to the new realities that come with COVID-19 by creating their illuminateSpeaker Series – a series which not only addresses aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic but also offers help to those struggling to understand their place in this new reality.
One way the organization is transitioning to serve is to provide helpful resources to our community and beyond as they relate to COVID-19 through this virtual series. In January, award-winning medical journalist and author, Katy Butler presented Ritual and Resilience: Building Meaning and Connection in a World Turned Upside Down where individuals attended from all over the world.
Butler explored the value of rituals and shared examples from her book, “The Art of Dying Well” and showed the audience how to create simple homegrown rituals that create special meaning. She also facilitated an inspiring “virtual” ceremony to share in a feeling of community and timeless sacred connection.
This month, another world-renowned persona and meditation pioneer, Sharon Salzberg follows up with Finding Resiliency in Challenging Times on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 6:00 PM PDT.
Sharon Salzberg is a meditation pioneer and industry leader, a world-renowned teacher and New York Times bestselling author. Sharon is also co-founder of The Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA, and the author of eleven books, including the New York Times bestseller, Real Happiness, her seminal work, Lovingkindness and her newest book, Real Change: Mindfulness To Heal Ourselves and the World, coming in September of 2020 from Flatiron Books.
This virtual event will provide an opportunity to deepen an exploration of the resiliency of the human spirit. For many, overwhelm and stress have become all too common. The balance of heart and mind is key to sustaining ourselves, especially in the face of daily challenges. Through the practice of meditation, three essential skills that cultivate balance are developed: concentration, mindfulness and compassion.
During this event, we will look at these skills to move us towards deeper care, both for ourselves and for others. The presentation will include a talk, guided meditation, and a panel discussion. This event is FREE but registration is required.
“We come together every month with speakers that give the community tools to help navigate COVID-19 through ourilluminate Speaker Series. Sharon is one of the first to bring meditation and mindfulness into mainstream American culture over 45 years ago,” said David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara. “Her relatable, demystifying approach has inspired generations of meditation teachers and wellness influencers and we hope everyone is able to take part in this event.”
HSB established the illuminate Speaker Series to address many of the struggles we all face that have been heightened during the pandemic. As we all know, people are reeling from this world-wide crisis emotionally, socially, and economically. People have shared a variety of intense feelings they are experiencing during this time, among them: fear, deep sadness, anxiety, grief, uncertainty over the present and what the future holds, vulnerability, despair, anger, hopelessness. They will have a new nationally-known speaker every month.
The series continues through 2021 with Dr. BJ Miller in March, Dr. Sunita Puri in April, Jenée Johnson in May and Nora McIerny in July. Pico Iyer will also make a return in August. Hospice of Santa Barbara would like to give a special thanks to Natalie Orfalea Foundation and Lou Buglioli and Ridley-Tree Cancer Center for sponsoring this event.
