OXNARD — As part of its 50th anniversary season, The PACC is excited to present Las Cafeteras in concert with special guests The Villalobos Brothers on February 1, 2019 starting at 7PM.
Las Cafeteras remix roots music and tell modern day stories. Their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of SoCal. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish, and Spanglish and add a remix of sounds, from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. LA Times described Las Cafeteras as “uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock … live, they’re magnetic.”
Two of the members of Las Cafeteras have roots in Ventura County. Jose Cano (dummer, Oxnard) is the second born child of immigrant parents from Jalisco, Mex. He first started playing music in the middle school concert band. His first drum kit came in high school after watching some friends play at a family party. Jorge Mijangos, a current Ventura city resident, is a multi-instrumentalist, master Son Jarocho musician & luthier. Born in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, Jorge began playing music at the age of 5. Locally, he teaches youth music & builds custom Son Jarocho musical instruments.
These members have returned to the area to not only record their music locally, but to push the arts forward in their own communities. Oxnard has become quite a hotbed for musicians, from Anderson .Paak (who did his “Oxnard” album release party and carnival at The PACC) to Cola Boyy (just announced on the Coachella lineup for this year). Last year, the city of Oxnard committed a million dollars to fund an Arts Hub in downtown. The commitment of Las Cafeteras to staying active in this area is adding to the city’s cultural vibrancy and carving out creative opportunities and futures for others, all while making music with meaning – a common thread for Oxnard artists. Cola Boyy is politically active for farm workers, .Paak is outspoken about gun violence, and for Las Cafeteras, social justice is who they are.
Las Cafeteras are joined by The Villalobos Brothers, one of today’s leading Contemporary Mexican ensembles. Their original compositions and arrangements masterfully blend and celebrate the richness of Mexican folk music with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music. They deliver an intoxicating brew of brilliance, cadence and virtuosity that awaken the senses and mesmerize the listener.
Salzer’s is hosting a meet and greet with Las Cafeteras on Friday, February 1 from 12 noon to 1 pm.
