College district accreditation commission visit set for April 16

The Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) will be visited by site team members representing the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (Commission) on Monday, April 16, the college district reported in a media release.

The visit will focus on the District’s “Special Report” in response to Commission concerns regarding Board governance. Site team members visiting the District include Dr. Gregory Gray, Chancellor, Riverside Community College District; Dr. Donald Singer, President, Board of Trustees, San Bernardino Community College District; and Dr. Gilbert Stork, Superintendent/President, Cuesta College. ??

Following the accreditation visit, site team members will prepare a report to be presented to the Accrediting Commission in early June. At the conclusion of the Commission’s June meeting, the District and Colleges will be informed of any further actions or recommendations by the Accrediting Commission. ?

In January 2012, the Commission placed all three of the district’s colleges to “Probation” status due to deficiencies identified by the Commission pertaining to the Board and governance. A probation status indicates the Commission finds an institution deviating significantly from the Commission’s Eligibility Requirements, Standards, or Commission policies that gives concern to the Commission.

The Commission is the accrediting agency that ensures its member institutions meet required institutional standards recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education, including mission, institutional effectiveness, student learning, student services, resources, leadership, and governance. ??

Accreditation status of the colleges continues during probation status; however, accreditation status cannot be reaffirmed until the recommendations for improvement have been satisfied.
