SANTA BARBARA — Casa Dolores will present its annual Día del Niño / Children’s Day event from 1 to 4 p.m. at 1023 Bath St., Santa Barbara.
The event is free and open to the public and features arts, crafts, face painting, a photo booth, music and balloon art. This year’s theme is “Marionettes of Mexico” and will include an exhibition of the museum’s puppet collection.
Like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Children’s day is meant to honor and celebrate children through activities, gifts and special events, the organization reported in a media release. Many different countries have developed their own days and creative ways to organize and celebrate this event for the children of their countries. In Chile, Children’s Day is always the first Sunday in August. In Mexico, it is always April 30.
Children have been celebrated for decades in Santa Barbara, dating back to the first Spanish Days with El Desfile De Los Niños (Children’s Parade). This August will be the parade’s 83rd year. Casa Dolores has hosted Dia del Niño since the museum opened in 2007, and also holds an annual, bilingual summer camp for children.
“Día del Niño is a way to celebrate children in the community and make them feel special,” said Linda Cathcart, Casa Dolores Founder and Director. “I invite families to attend our annual event so that together we can treat children to a day of art, educational fun and cultural entertainment.”
