WELCOME CAM STUDIO GUEST ARTIST ZARA MONET FEENEY

Extensively, Zara Monet Feeney’s artistic trajectories re-examine voyueristic compositions, the male gaze and  socio-sexual empowerment issues. As a gay feminist, she designs her work to engage very strongly with historical and contemporary notions of intersectional feminism and patriarchal authority. Meticulously controlling the play between the subject and the space it occupies, the work is able to guide, critique and call into question the intention of the viewers gaze. The subjects are dramatically posed, the textiles are ornate, the color schema is non-naturalistic and the spatial play is ambiguous. It is her intention for the work to reify a sort of psychological, reflexive experience, where the thing being viewed demands a self- critical penetration of vision or a stare extended in time.

Specifically, during her residency at the Carnegie Art Museum Studio Gallery, Feeney will be creating several new paintings to hang alongside existing work. In addition to a critique of misogyny, these newer pieces will comment on other political and personal tragedies such as mass violence and the decline of mental health. Feeney will use a painted collage of abstract and realistic imagery to convey these ideas. The canvases will be unstretched and sometimes spill out onto the floor. Using simultaneously dramatic yet austere aesthetic sensibilities, ideally the work will be implicitly poignant for the viewer’s interaction.

SUMINAGASHI  ART AND WINE

Wednesday, March 13    6-7:30 pm

Suminagashi is a very fun and meditative way of marbling paper (making marble-like designs on paper) using an ancient Japanese technique and Sumi-Ink.  Using brushes, special ink is floated on the surface of water creating concentric but random forms. In this workshop you will create beautiful designs on paper that can be used as stationary, envelopes or be mounted as works of art themselves.  This is a fascinating art form and enjoyable for all. No prior art experience necessary!

Space is limited, reservation and prepayment required
$35, members $30 (materials and refreshments are included)
