Helping Steer Student’s Career Paths   |   The Paths to Professionalism event has been a School of Management event for several decades. The event is held in the Spring term and brings together industry panelists who share their career insights on successes and challenges in defining a career path. This year, over 150 students participated over ZOOM. The event featured conversations with guest panelists Jonathan Dong (The Walt Disney Company), Celeste Gehring (Visionary Building), Ted Glick (Washington Commanders), Jackie Jones (Slalom). The panel was moderated by School of Management Sports Management student Ryan Douglas who, together with business students Andrea Villasenor and Brissa Castaneda led the design, planning, and execution of the event. The interview-style conversations were followed by breakout room discussions hosted by recent School of Management alumni who generously gave their time to help students with their questions about career preparation between industry needs and their own passions. Watch event recording on our School of Management YouTube channel.
It’s another Award-Winning Forecast Season for CERF   |   It has been the forecasting season for our Center for Economic Research and Forecasting (CERF). In February, we held our annual San Fernando Valley Economic Outlook Breakfast in collaboration with the San Fernando Valley Business Journal, and in March, our annual Ventura County Economic Forecast. The Ventura County event drew more than 200 guests who enjoyed a presentation by nationally recognized guest speaker Danielle DiMartino-Booth and our own Matthew Fienup’s outlook for the national, state, and regional economy. Also in March, Matthew Fienup (Executive Director, CERF) and Dan Hamilton (Director of Economics at CERF and Program Director, MS in Quantitative Economics) were notified that they won the Zillow Crystal Ball Award for most accurate forecasts of home price expectations – for the third time in a row! They succeeded in a field of approximately 100 forecasting houses around the country. We are incredibly proud of our Center.
Faculty Spotlight on Sabith Khan   |   Director of our Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) program, Sabith Khan, has been appointed to the newly established Global Committee at the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). The Council serves as an information sharing and coordinating mechanism which assists the International Director in the development of an international agenda for ASPA, and serves as a link between the national leadership and international related activities and membership, among others. Sabith also chairs the South Asian Section for Public Administration of ASPA, which has been selected as the recipient of the Oveta Culp Hobby Training Award. This award is given annually to recognize chapters and sub-sections of ASPA for providing exceptional professional development programming and activities to members. Over the holiday break, Professor Khan also met with program alumni in Saudi Arabia. We’re happy to report that they are building impressive leadership careers that contribute to the advancement of Saudi Arabia. Always proud of our faculty members.
Business of Sports Club Thriving   |   Our Business of Sports student club has been very busy in its first year. They visited the San Diego Padres for a behind-the-scenes tour of Petco Park that included an up-close look at the Press Box, Luxury Suites, Hall of Fame, Cutwater Coronado Club, and Field Warning Track. Afterwards, the Padres hosted an informative Q & A session with Chelsea Dill, Director of Tourism and Corporate Events, and Karina Boites, Account Executive of Group Tickets and Hospitality, who provided exceptional career advice for our aspiring and future professionals. They also had another behind-the-scenes tour at SoFi stadium, where the Rams just won Super Bowl 2022! They have also held virtual events with Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission and the Los Angeles Rams HR. Mark Orlando will continue to advise, as the newly appointed Program Director, for the undergraduate Sports Management major.
Alumnus Owned Business Named Fastest Growing  |  How does 5,000% growth sound to you? Last Fall, the San Fernando Valley Business Journal’s celebrated the Fastest Growing Companies in the San Fernando Valley. Listed as #1, was Packform, a company founded by alumnus Preston Geeting (Business Administration ’02). Packform is an online marketplace that disrupts the packaging industry as we know it. As reported in the media, it closed a $25 million pre-IPO round. Congratulations to alumnus, Preston, (shown in the photo with Charlie Crumpley, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the San Fernando Valley Business Journal). Our Steven Dorfman Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship continues to support our SoCal startup community at Hub101. Learn more.
