REACH is creating opportunities and connections during the summer through College Tours, Backpacking, and Culminating International and Domestic Trips
SANTA BARBARA — REACH Fellowship, a leading organization dedicated to empowering students through educational and experiential learning opportunities, is thrilled to announce their summer trips designed to inspire and educate the participants in the program, referred to as Fellows. This year, REACH Fellows will attend a variety of enriching trips, including college tours, backpacking adventures, and culminating experiential trips, both international and domestic. REACH staff carefully select these Fellows during the fall of their junior year of high school through a rigorous selection process, and each cohort is supported through the summer of their first year of college. The primary goal of the program is to support first-generation, low- to moderate-income students in Santa Barbara County. REACH is able to fund the program, these trips, and other workshops through the support of the Audacious Foundation and other generous donors. This support enables us to offer the program to students at no cost to them or their families.
College Tours: San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Francisco
Understanding the importance of higher education, REACH Fellows transitioning from juniors to seniors in high school will attend one of the four comprehensive college tours across California. The Fellows will have the opportunity to visit esteemed institutions in either San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, or the Bay Area. These tours provide firsthand college life experience, encourage academic aspirations, and help students make informed decisions about their future educational paths. Over the first two days of the college tours, the Fellows visit two universities each day, gaining insights into the campuses and the resources available to them. On the third day, they explore the local area, utilizing public transportation to visit various attractions. The final two days are dedicated to reflection, during which the Fellows contemplate their learnings and personal experiences and formally conclude the trip. This immersive experience equips the Fellows with the knowledge and confidence to make well-informed decisions when they begin their college applications in the fall.
Backpacking: Sierra Nevada
REACH Fellows transitioning from senior year to their first year in college get to attend an exhilarating eight-day backpacking trip to the Sierra Nevada. This trip is designed to foster teamwork, resilience, social-emotional learning, and a love for the great outdoors. The Fellows will engage in guided hikes, learn
essential survival skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for nature through these immersive experiences. They begin their journey by selecting REACH-provided gear to use during their trip. The Fellows spend day one preparing and traveling to the Sierra Nevadas, where they establish a campsite near the trailhead. From the second day to the seventh day, the daily routine includes morning yoga and meditation, followed by breakfast, packing, and a series of lessons focused on technical skills or personal development. At each location, they set up camp, prepare dinner, and engage in activities around the campfire. On the final day, the Fellows travel back to Santa Barbara and dedicate about half a day to cleaning and organizing the gear, ensuring it is ready for the next group of Fellows. This experiential experience provides the Fellows with the necessary knowledge to organize their own backpacking trips, offer resources to foster resilience, and overall, build a connection with nature, away from electronics.
Culminating Trips: Bolivia and Lake Superior
To cap off an incredible two-and-a-half years of experiential learning, REACH Fellows transitioning from their first year in college to their second year will travel together on one of the two extraordinary culminating trips. The international journey will be to Bolivia, where students will immerse themselves in the rich cultural and historical heritage of this South American nation. They get to travel to five different cities in Bolivia and stay at homestays in two of them. They will get the opportunity to do a three-day trek and participate in activities with Teatro Trono, a well-known theater group, exploring the topics of social justice, climate change, and indigenous cultures. The domestic trip will be in Lake Superior, allowing students to discover the natural beauty and ecological significance of the largest of the Great Lakes and learn about the native tribes in the area. They will sail through the Apostle Islands, do some community service work, and learn about the Ojibwe tribe while enriching their own culture and heritage.

Los becarios de REACH transicionando del u?ltimo an?o de la preparatoria al primer an?o en la universidad pueden asistir a un emocionante viaje de ocho di?as con mochila a Sierra Nevada. Este viaje esta? disen?ado para fomentar el trabajo en equipo, la resiliencia, el aprendizaje socioemocional y el amor por el aire libre. Los becarios participara?n en caminatas guiadas, aprendera?n habilidades de supervivencia esenciales y desarrollara?n una apreciacio?n ma?s profunda de la naturaleza a trave?s de estas experiencias inmersivas. Comienzan su viaje seleccionando el equipaje proporcionado por REACH para utilizar durante su viaje. Los becarios pasan el primer di?a prepara?ndose y viajando a Sierra Nevada, donde establecen un campamento cerca del comienzo del sendero. Viajes culminantes: Bolivia y el Lago Superior
Para culminar dos increi?bles an?os y medio de aprendizaje experiencial, los becarios de REACH en transicio?n de su primer an?o en la universidad al segundo an?o viajara?n juntos en uno de los dos extraordinarios viajes culminantes. El viaje internacional sera? a Bolivia, donde los estudiantes se sumergira?n en el rico patrimonio cultural e histo?rico de esta nacio?n sudamericana. Pueden viajar a cinco ciudades diferentes de Bolivia y alojarse en casas de familia en dos de ellas. Tendra?n la oportunidad de hacer una caminata de tres di?as y participar en actividades con Teatro Trono, un conocido grupo de teatro, explorando temas de justicia social, cambio clima?tico y culturas indi?genas. El viaje nacional sera? en el Lago Superior, lo que permitira? a los estudiantes descubrir la belleza natural y la importancia ecolo?gica del mayor de los Grandes Lagos y aprender sobre las tribus nativas de la zona. Navegara?n por las Islas Apo?stol, realizara?n algu?n trabajo de servicio comunitario y aprendera?n sobre la tribu Ojibwe mientras enriquecen su propia cultura y herencia.
