OXNARD — Oxnard College Institute for Latino Performing Arts proudly presents the next installment of the Latino Thought Makers series featuring nationally acclaimed writer, Josefina Lopez and multi-award winning actor, Luis Guzman. The series, led by writer-director-comedian, Rick Najera will take place on Thursday, March 10th at Oxnard College’s Performing Arts Center located at 4000 S. Rose Avenue, Oxnard, CA 93033. Doors open at 6:30pm, show at 7:00pm. Entrance and parking are free. A $5 donation is suggested to benefit the Oxnard College Foundation supporting students in the arts.
“Oxnard College is excited to have Josefina and Luis join us at the next Latino Thought Makers,” said Ken Sherwood, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Learning at Oxnard College, “I’m a huge fan, so to have them as guests at our college, is an honor for me and the entire Oxnard community.”
Rick Najera, who doubles as Oxnard College Institute for Latino Performing Arts Creative Director and host of Latino Thought Makers Series, welcomes author, screenwriter and playwright, Josefina Lopez. Best known for authoring the play and co-authoring the 2002 SUNDANCE award-winning film Real Women Have Curves, Lopez started her writing career at 17 and has had more than 80 productions of her many plays throughout the country. She has been working as a professional screenwriter in Hollywood for almost 25 years with countless development deals and screenplay assignments. She has worked with many established producers like Norman Lear (All In the Family) and Michael McDonald (American Crime) to bring Latinos to television. Lopez is presently developing the musical version of Real Women Have Curves for Broadway.
Also joining Latino Thought Makers is the star of the CBS hit drama seriesCode Black, Luis Guzman. Some of Guzman’s most notable roles on the big screen include Carlitos Way, Q&A, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Traffic, The Count of Monte Cristo, Maldeamores, and Nothing Like the Holidays, in which host Rick Najera wrote the screenplay. His work in television includes HBO’s John From Cincinnati, Oz, How to Make it in America and more. Known for his exceptionally big heart, Guzman has been working to fight homelessness in America, creating a documentary on the very subject called the NIMBY experience. Guzman can be seen in the upcoming films Keanu, and The Do Over coming out this year.
“I’m excited to welcome these two exceptional talents to the Latino Thought Makers Series. I’ve known them and worked with them for many years and now I have the opportunity to share their talent with the Oxnard community and supporters of the performing arts,” said Najera.
