Bilingual report — April News from People’s Self-Help Housing

So said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, in 1966 at the Open Housing Marches in Chicago. The tragedy of King’s assassination in April 1968 led to the reaffirmation of the Civil Rights Act and the addition of Title VIII which we know as the Fair Housing Act.

In recognition of the passage of this law and the constant vigilance needed to ensure that its provisions are upheld, each April we celebrate this landmark legislation.

While transgressions still occur and the struggle to build more housing for those in desperate need can feel unending, it’s worth taking a moment to recognize that when there is a will, a way forward can be found even amongst the most disparate groups.

I invite you to revisit the history and the content of The Fair Housing Act here and reflect on what has been and can be achieved. Though we are tired of seeing the conditions still experienced around our communities that have not yet been righted, I trust you will stay encouraged, not growing weary of doing more and better.

As we’ve been reminded that “now is the time”, we hope you’ll continue joining us in creating new opportunities for those most in need. Thanks for your ongoing support, that renews us each day and propels us toward strengthening our communities through our collaborative actions.

Celebrating Resident Success

This year, through fierce advocacy, and with the help of her onsite social worker, Tara was accepted for a Section 8 voucher. She began applying to apartments and within days was accepted!

Over the moon to begin this next chapter of her journey, she shared: “I really want to thank my social worker at PSHH. He is a rockstar and guided me through the whole process. I’m so grateful for his support.”

Así dijo el Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, en 1966, en las Marchas por la Vivienda Abierta de Chicago. La tragedia del asesinato de King en abril de 1968 llevó a la reafirmación de la Ley de Derechos Civiles y a la adición del Título VIII que conocemos como Ley de Vivienda Justa.

En reconocimiento a la aprobación de esta ley y a la constante vigilancia necesaria para garantizar el cumplimiento de sus disposiciones, cada mes de abril celebramos este hito legislativo.

Aunque siguen produciéndose transgresiones y la lucha por construir más viviendas para quienes las necesitan desesperadamente puede parecer interminable, merece la pena dedicar un momento a reconocer que, cuando hay voluntad, se puede encontrar una forma de avanzar incluso entre los grupos más dispares.

Les invito a repasar aquí la historia y el contenido de la Ley de Vivienda Justa y a reflexionar sobre lo que se ha conseguido y se puede conseguir. Aunque estemos cansados de ver las condiciones que todavía se viven en nuestras comunidades y que aún no se han enderezado, confío en que sigan animados, sin cansarse de hacer más y mejor.

Como nos han recordado que “ahora es el momento”, esperamos que sigan uniéndose a nosotros en la creación de nuevas oportunidades para los más necesitados. Gracias por vuestro apoyo constante, que nos renueva cada día y nos impulsa a fortalecer nuestras comunidades.
