Donald Trump has become the match held to the pilot light. That small, flickering flame has now roared into that bonfire that will quite likely burn Republican chances of winning the White House for at least a generation. The GOP could lose even more if, as now expected, Trump becomes its nominee for the presidential contest.
The Republican Party, which had been severely divided over the wisdom of crowning this uncivil leader and giving him its blessing, is said to be “coming around,” albeit reluctantly in some quarters, to accepting and even supporting Trump as he takes on the mantle of the presidential candidate likely to face off squarely and disastrously, for the Republican Party, with Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee. The “Stop Trump At Any Price” effort within the GOP is fizzling as the “people’s will” becomes clear.
Still, the Republican National Committee is trying to figure out what to do about this insurgency that has become a monstrous dilemma. The far-right segment of the Republican Party seems to have amnesia regarding its long-term humiliating collapse in California after an intense anti-immigrant campaign initiated by Proposition 187 under Governor Pete Wilson’s watch in 1994. California is not the South, nor one of the New England states. This is immigrant country, where many of us are sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of Mexican immigrants. When Trump insults Mexico, he insults us and our families. When he insults Mexicans, he’s attacking us Americans of Mexican ancestry, as well as our parents, grandparents and ancestors, not to mention our family values. This is deeply personal, and California has shown that when immigrants and their voting children are outraged, we hit back hard at the voting booth. California Republicans learned this the hard way. The unfortunate and despicable violence at Trump rallies may only be a taste of the chaos that would ensue if Trump were to prevail in the coming months. If by some tragic twist of fate he becomes president, the ramifications for our society would be profound.
And we haven’t even mentioned the antipathy toward this man by a sizeable majority of American women, who to a large extent have an “unfavorable view” of him.* Trump being Trump, he has managed to denigrate women—that includes our mothers and our sisters—on a fairly regular schedule.
This is not going to be a peaceful election season. And the prospects for post-election peace are tenuous, at best.

Las Llamas Políticas Se Encienden

Donald Trump se ha vuelto el cerillo que prende el piloto del gas. Esa llama pequeña y parpadeante creció inmensamente y ahora es esa fogata que muy probablemente destruya la posibilidad de que el Partido Republicano gane la Casa Blanca durante una generación entera, como mínimo. Es posible que el Gran Partido Viejo pierda aún más si, como es de esperar, Trump se vuelva el candidato para la contienda presidencial.
Se dice que el Partido Republicano, el cual ha sido seriamente dividido sobre la sabiduría de coronar a este líder poco civil y concederle su bendición, se está dejando convencer, aunque de mala gana en algunos círculos, de aceptar y hasta apoyar a Trump ahora que él se asume la responsabilidad del candidato presidencial que probablemente se enfrentará directamente y, para el Partido Republicano, desastrosamente, con Hillary Clinton, la supuesta candidata del Partido Demócrata. La misión de “detener a Donald Trump a toda costa” dentro del Partido Republicano se va desvaneciendo ahora que “la voluntad de la gente” se está reconociendo.
Aun así, el Comité Nacional Republicano está tratando de decidir qué hacer frente a esta insurrección que se ha vuelto un dilema monstruoso. El segmento ultraderechista del Partido Republicano parece padecer de amnesia con respecto al colapso humillante y a largo plazo en California después de una intensa campaña anti-inmigrante iniciada por la Proposición 187 bajo el mando del gobernador Pete Wilson en 1994. California no es el Sur de Estados Unidos, ni uno de los estados de Nueva Inglaterra. Esta es la tierra de los inmigrantes, donde muchos entre nosotros somos hijos e hijas, nietos y nietas de inmigrantes mexicanos. Cuando Trump insulta a todo México, nos insulta a nosotros y a nuestras familias. Cuando él insulta a los mexicanos, está atacando a nosotros, americanos de ascendencia mexicana, tanto como a nuestros padres, abuelos y ancestros, sin mencionar nuestros valores familiares. Esto es profundamente personal, y California ha demostrado que cuando los inmigrantes y sus hijos votantes se ofenden hondamente, le damos en la torre al llegar a las urnas. Los republicanos californianos han tenido que aprender una lección dura. Es posible que la desafortunada y despreciable violencia en las recientes reuniones de los seguidores de Trump es nada menos que un indicio del caos que resultará si Trump sigue predominando durante los meses venideros. Si por algún trágico giro inesperado Trump se vuelva el presidente, las ramificaciones para nuestra sociedad serían profundas.
Y ni hemos mencionado la antipatía para con este hombre por una nutrida mayoría de mujeres americanas, quienes en gran parte tienen un concepto “desfavorable” de él.* Y Trump, siendo Trump, ha logrado denigrar a las mujeres—y eso incluye a nuestras madres y hermanas—con bastante regularidad.
Esta no va a ser una temporada electoral apacible, que digamos. Y la posibilidad de que la paz reine después de las elecciones es, en el mejor de los casos, tenue.
