Eighteen-year-old Sadie Karina Elledge was doing her job as a restaurant server in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and learned a harsh lesson about the society in which we live: there’s an amorphous, subterranean hatred pervading our daily lives that occasionally rises to the surface and erupts in our faces. According to a recent Washington Post story*, Sadie had served a meal to a couple at the restaurant. As they left, the woman left a credit card receipt, though not with a tip for Sadie. Instead, on the line for the tip, she had boldly written, “WE ONLY TIP CITIZENS.”
Never mind that Sadie, of Mexican and Honduran descent, is an American citizen. She may be of dark complexion, but she was born and raised as a U.S. Southerner. She plays soccer, graduated from high school and was about to start community college. She’s a quintessential American young woman. And there she was, being hated by someone who was ignorant and who didn’t even know her.
Sadie’s grandfather, John Elledge, who is white, was outraged. He posted a photo of the receipt on Facebook and even publicized the name of the perpetrator of this despicable incident. The couple confronted him in the restaurant after they returned to complain. He justifiably and understandably refused to apologize to them.
There are dark forces of hatred lurking in the background, surfacing occasionally especially now as our election season unfolds, champing at the bit to gain legitimacy and cachet. If those forces receive a boost in November, it could be open season on people like Sadie, and many of the rest of us, who simply want to live the American Dream in peace, but who happen to have dark skin.

El Odio Bajo la Superficie

Sadie Karina Elledge, dieciocho años de edad, estaba haciendo su trabajo como mesera en un restaurante de Harrisonburg, Virginia, y aprendió una dura lección sobre la sociedad en la que vivimos: existe un odio subterráneo amorfo que impregna nuestra vida cotidiana y que de vez en cuando sale a la superficie y estalla en nuestras caras. De acuerdo con un reciente artículo del Washington Post*, Sadie había servido una comida a una pareja en el restaurante. Al salirse, la mujer dejó un recibo de tarjeta de crédito, aunque no con una propina para Sadie. En cambio, en la línea en donde se apunta la propina, ella había escrito groseramente, “PAGAMOS PROPINAS SOLAMENTE A LOS CIUDADANOS” [mi traducción].
Poco importa que Sadie, de ascendencia mexicana y hondureña, es ciudadana estadounidense. Ella podría ser de tez oscura, pero nació y se crió como sureña en los EE.UU. Ella juega al fútbol, ??se graduó de la secundaria y estaba a punto de empezar el colegio comunitario local. Ella es una joven estadounidense por excelencia. Y ahí andaba, odiada por alguien ignorante que ni siquiera la conocía.
El abuelo de Sadie, John Elledge, de raza blanca, se indignó. Publicó una foto del recibo en Facebook e incluyó el nombre del autor de este incidente despreciable. La pareja se enfrentó con él en el restaurante cuando después volvieron a quejarse. El señor Elledge comprensible y justificadamente se negó a disculparse con ellos.
Hay fuerzas oscuras de odio que acechan en el fondo, de vez en cuando saliendo a la superficie, sobre todo ahora durante esta temporada electoral, esperando con impaciencia ganar legitimidad y prestigio. Si estas fuerzas se alientan en noviembre, podría ser una temporada de caza de personas como Sadie, y muchos más entre nosotros, que simplemente quieren vivir el Sueño Americano en paz, pero da la casualidad que tienen la piel oscura.
