My name is David, and last month I gave up my addiction to telephone landlines.  There, I said it, and I’m glad.

I’d been wrestling with the decision for years, and I finally decided to take the plunge.  Figuratively speaking, I took the scissors and once again cut the cord, just as I’d first done when my daughter was born, and then when I recently discontinued all TV cable service.  Last month I may have cut that final major cord in my life, the landline.  The phones I grew up with were unforgiving: we had to stay in one place throughout a conversation.  We were tethered to the old rotary phones and didn’t have the liberty to move about.  At least modern landline phones have remote receivers that allow the caller and receiver of the call to wander around their homes, accomplishing tasks or just pacing the floor.  Some of the less-inhibited modern landliners insist on casually taking the phone with them into the restroom, but let’s just flush that thought for now…

I used to wonder if my cell phone would suffice and if I’d survive in a world without my landline.  After all, what if there’s an emergency and a family member tries to reach me in the middle of the night when my cell phone was off?  Well, if I’d looked into it, I would have known that my cell phone allows me to designate “priority” callers who can punch through the “do not disturb” setting on my phone.  I used to worry about the Internet going down and not having any communication with the world.  But that’s a small risk I decided I was willing to take.  I used to fret about not having a landline phone to call my cell phone if I ever misplaced it in the house.  But it’s not like I live in a mansion, so I can’t really “lose” my phone in the confines of my modest home.

I realized that I wasn’t ever using my landline anymore, but paying a lot each month just for the “backup” security it offered.  The only calls I was receiving on it before I decided to forego answering any numbers I didn’t recognize were charities, pollsters, scammers and solicitors.

My life is quieter now and I pay less on my monthly bills. I feel like I have more control over my communications, all of which occur now on my smart phone, whether that be with email, social media, communication apps or the modern wireless phone with all of its advantages.

No Más TV Ni Teléfonos

Mi nombre es David, y el mes pasado renuncié a mi adicción a los teléfonos fijos. Ahora sí lo dije, y me alegro.

Había estado batallando con la decisión durante años, y finalmente decidí dar el gran paso. Hablando figuradamente, tomé las tijeras y una vez más corté el cable, tal como había cortado el cordón umbilical  cuando mi hija nació, y luego, cuando recientemente suspendí todos los servicios de televisión por cable.  El mes pasado, es posible que haya cortado ese último cordón importante en mi vida, la línea telefónica fija. Los teléfonos con los que crecí eran difíciles de usar: tuvimos que quedarnos en un solo lugar durante toda una conversación. Estábamos atados a los viejos teléfonos rotativos y no teníamos la libertad de movernos. Al menos los teléfonos modernos con línea fija tienen receptores remotos que permiten a la personas en una conversación telefónica deambular por la casa, realizar tareas o simplemente caminar de un lado a otro. Algunos de los dueños de la moderna línea fija menos inhibidos insisten en llevar casualmente el teléfono con ellos al baño, pero desechemos ese pensamiento por ahora …

Solía ??preguntarme si mi teléfono celular sería suficiente y si sobreviviría en un mundo sin mi teléfono de línea fija.  Al fin y al cabo, ¿qué pasa si hay una emergencia y un miembro de la familia trata de contactarme en medio de la noche cuando mi teléfono celular está apagado? Bueno, si lo hubiera investigado, habría sabido que mi teléfono celular me permite designar a las personas que sean “prioritarias”.  Y esas personas indicadas pueden marcar y hacer sonar el teléfono a pesar del ajuste “No molestar” que me es disponible. Solía ??preocuparme por la interrupción del Internet y así no tener ninguna comunicación con el resto del mundo. Pero ese es un pequeño riesgo que decidí que estaba dispuesto a tomar. Solía ??preocuparme por no tener un teléfono de línea fija para llamar a mi teléfono celular para las veces que lo extravíe en la casa. Pero no es como si viviera en una mansión, así que realmente no puedo “perder” mi teléfono dentro de los confines de mi modesto hogar.

Me di cuenta de que ya no usaba mi teléfono fijo, sino que pagaba mucho cada mes solo por la seguridad del “respaldo” que me ofrecía. Las únicas llamadas que recibí antes de que decidiera renunciar a contestar cualquier número que no reconociera eran organizaciones benéficas, encuestadores, estafadores y vendedores.

Mi vida es más tranquila ahora y pago menos en las facturas mensuales. Siento que tengo más control sobre mis comunicaciones, todo lo cual ocurre ahora en mi teléfono portátil, ya sea con el correo electrónico, las redes sociales, las aplicaciones de comunicación o el moderno teléfono inalámbrico con todas sus ventajas.
