In the state of Arizona, our neighbor to the east with a strong anti-immigrant bias, a mayor recently demonstrated an exaggerated aversion to something that he believes violates the tenets of the English-only movement. Ken Taylor, mayor of Huachuca City, was greatly aggrieved when a bilingual invitation to a meeting of border city mayors from both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border was sent to him. According to the El Paso Times*, he protested to the executive director of the Border Mayors’ Association that he would NOT accept an invitation that was sent to him in “Spanish/Mexican” (is he not sure which one it is?). Never mind that this meeting is for Mexican mayors (who happen to speak Spanish, by the way) and their American counterparts, and that he is surrounded by cities, conservation areas and national forests with names like Sierra Vista, Las Cienegas, Sahuarita, Rio Rico, Sonoita and Coronado.
This appears to be an impulsive reaction to the ultra-nationalism that we are witnessing through the white-hot demagoguery of this election season. Some xenophobic elements of the electorate want to seal themselves off from the rest of the world, and the rest of the world from us. Whereas the citizens of other countries pride themselves on having the ability to learn and speak more than one language, many of our co-citizens see bilingualism as an affront to their sense of righteous linguistic superiority.
Ken Taylor was removed from the association’s email list and received an apology for having “his feathers ruffled.” Taylor responded that his feathers are ruffled when anything American puts “other countries First.” He also wrote*, “If American Fails, it will be…,” and the tirade continues.
Maybe he should learn the rules of correct English capitalization before ranting in English.

La Antipatía Bilingüe

En el estado de Arizona, nuestro vecino del este con fuertes tendencias anti-inmigrantes, un alcalde ha demostrado recientemente una aversión exagerada a lo que él cree viola los principios del movimiento “solo inglés”. Ken Taylor, el alcalde de la Ciudad de Huachuca, fue bastante ofendido cuando recibió una invitación bilingüe para una reunión de alcaldes de ciudades fronterizas de ambos lados de la frontera EE.UU.-México. De acuerdo con el diario El Paso Times*, se quejó ante el director ejecutivo de la Asociación de Alcaldes de la Frontera que no iba a aceptar una invitación que le fuera enviada en “español/mexicano” (¿será que no está seguro de cuál se trata?). No importa que esta reunión sea para alcaldes mexicanos (quienes, se supone, hablan español) y sus colegas estadounidenses, y que esté rodeado de ciudades, áreas de conservación y bosques nacionales con nombres tales como Sierra Vista, Las Ciénegas, Sahuarita, Río Rico, Sonoita y Coronado.
Esto parece ser una reacción impulsiva al ultranacionalismo que estamos percibiendo a través de la demagogia al rojo vivo de esta temporada electoral. Algunos elementos xenófobos de los electores quieren aislarse del resto del mundo, y esperan que el resto del mundo nos deje en paz. Mientras los ciudadanos de otros países se enorgullecen de tener la capacidad de aprender y hablar más de un idioma, muchos de nuestros conciudadanos consideran el bilingüismo como una afrenta a su sentido justo de superioridad lingüística.
Ken Taylor fue retirado de la lista de correo electrónico de la asociación y recibió una disculpa por haberle “erizado las plumas.” Taylor respondió que sus plumas están erizadas cuando algo americano pone “otros países Primero” [mi traducción]. También escribió: “Si América Fracasa, será …” [mi traducción], y la diatriba continúa.
Tal vez debería aprender las reglas para la correcta capitalización del inglés antes de echar pestes en inglés.
