South Carolina Republican Senator, Lindsey Graham, has become known to more Americans over the last couple of weeks because of his support for the controversial Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, as well as his well-publicized disgust with Democrats.

But several months ago, Mr. Graham stood up, if only mildly, to President Trump and disagreed with one of the president’s many obnoxious remarks about immigrants. Mr. Graham declared that America is an idea defined by its ideals. Some writers have pushed back against the concept of America as merely an “idea,” but I believe it is crucial to understanding the universal importance of American ideals in the world. These ideals (not necessarily the reality) include concepts such as equal opportunity, equal rights, religious freedom and the fundamental right to pursue happiness.

Just as Catholics or Jews can embrace Buddhism and retain their identities as Catholics or Jews, so too can people throughout the world embrace American idealism, without all of its current bluster and bullying and arrogance. Over the past decade, and particularly over the past two years, this nation has lost sight of those ideas and ideals that have the potential to make America great, whether “again,” or for all time going forward. It doesn’t matter—let’s not argue about it and divide ourselves more than we already are. If we want our children and grandchildren to possess any trust in our institutions and to look forward to their futures, we must make a bold attempt to heal this nation in the midst of the current profound rupture in American society and resurrect that idea of American greatness, not because we are superior, but because we are custodians of an idea—and of ideals—that along with the world’s religions are the only source of hope for the inhabitants of the nations throughout the world, including ours.

I fear that if we continue to fight each other and tear each other to shreds without mercy, we will lose our greatness in the eyes of the world, and become “just another country.”

America: La Idea y Lo Ideal

El senador republicano de Carolina del Sur, Lindsey Graham, se ha dado a conocer a más estadounidenses en las últimas semanas debido a su apoyo al candidato controversial a la Corte Suprema, Brett Kavanaugh, así como a su bien conocida repugnancia para con los Demócratas.

Pero hace varios meses, el Sr. Graham hizo frente, aunque solo un poco, al Presidente Trump al declarar que no estuvo de acuerdo con uno de los muchos comentarios ofensivos del presidente sobre los inmigrantes. El Sr. Graham declaró que América es una idea definida por sus ideales. Algunos escritores han rechazado el concepto de Estados Unidos como una mera “idea”, pero creo que es crucial para entender la importancia universal de los ideales estadounidenses en el mundo. Si queremos que nuestros hijos y nietos tengan confianza en nuestras instituciones y esperanzas para sus futuros, debemos hacer un esfuerzo audaz para curar a esta nación en medio de la profunda ruptura actual en la sociedad estadounidense y resucitar esa idea de la grandeza estadounidense, no porque seamos superiores, sino porque somos custodios de una idea y de ideales que, junto con las religiones del mundo, son las únicas fuentes de esperanza para los habitantes de las naciones del mundo, incluida la nuestra.

Me temo que si seguimos luchando entre nosotros y despedazándonos sin piedad, perderemos nuestra grandeza ante los ojos del mundo y nos convertiremos en “simplemente otro país”.
