The reception for “… to take a good picture,” the Carlos Avila Photography Solo Exhibit, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 1 at the Bell Arts Factory, 432 No. Ventura Ave., Ventura. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m.
Avila said he remembers that at the young age of 7, he wrote down a concept written with a permanent marker inside his clothes drawer. That concept turned out to be a goal, “…to take a good picture.”
Since then Avila said he has sought to learn as much about photography as possible. He came to believe that one could learn everything about photography and still be absolutely confused. So he molded that concept into learning as much technique as possible but also to just let the magic happen, he said.
The show brings the public Avila’s idea of what a good picture is. From the abstract views of custom car’s logos and details to historical landmarks that have been lost to time. His style of photography is one that says, timeless, according to a media release. His work could have been taken 50 years ago or 50 minutes ago. Some of his influences include Picasso, Dali, Ansel Adams, Goya, Diego Rivera, and Frida Kahlo.
This photography show is a 3-part exhibit: A series of images taken 14 years ago of historical landmarks in Ventura County; Colorful abstract images of car details, emblems and logos matted and framed in custom pinstriped frames; and some of his most important pictures taken over the years. Some of these images come from his award-winning portfolio. One particular image called “Candied Apples” won Best in Color in the Top Photog ’07 contest held thru PhotoVentura & the Buenaventura Art Association.
