Aug. 13 — Nyeland Promise hosting a Bike Rodeo

Nyeland Acres Bike Rodeo Brings Young Cyclists Together

NYELAND ACRES — The Nyeland Acres Bike Rodeo will take place this Saturday, August 13 from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Nyeland Acres Community Center, giving children of all ages an opportunity to learn proper hand signalling and traffic safety skills to reduce riding accidents involving youth. At the event, the Oxnard Bike Hub will set up a series of stations which will provided participants an opportunity to learn correct riding skills and techniques. One of the stations includes a mechanical inspection for participants’ bikes and equipment. Children will receive free helmets, bikes, safety reflectors and other educational materials. Many residents are expected to attend the Bike Rodeo.

As part of the Bike Rodeo, children will be able to test their newly learned skills by going for a bike ride around Nyeland Acres escorted by Ventura County Sheriff and Oxnard Police Department. A Gold Coast Transit Bus will follow the bikers full of parents and community leaders. The bikers will make a quick stop at the big Santa on Ventura Blvd.

“We are so excited to be able to offer this free educational event to youth in Nyeland Acres,” says Brenda Heredia, Outreach Coordinator. “We are partnering with several local organizations and volunteers to make the Bike Rodeo a fun and action-packed event.”

The Bike Rodeo is part of the Safe Travels/Viajes Seguros multi-lingual program, a Mini-Grants program with Southern California Association of Governments developed to increase community intelligence and reduced anxiety for walkers, bikers, and children when walking in and around the streets. The Mini-Grants Program centers resilient streets, a framework for using street space for community resiliency, recovery, and resource delivery that prioritizes disadvantaged communities and communities most harmed by traffic injuries and fatalities. Nyeland Promise was motivated to apply for a second grant because of the lack of infrastructure in the community that generally provides safety to pedestrians.

Mary Anne Rooney, co-founder of Nyeland Promise, states “Nyeland Promise is excited to participate in this program and is honored to have received this grant. We know this will provide information to our residents that will help keep them safe as they move about in the community on foot.”

The Southern California Association of Governments awarded Nyeland Promise a grant totaling $15,000 to implement their traffic safety project between June 13, 2022, and August 31, 2022.

SCAG’s Go Human campaign and the Community Streets Mini-Grants Program is supported with funding by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

There will be many photo opportunities.
