UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Dr. Robert Bullard, discussing The Quest for Environmental and Racial Justice on Wednesday, April 21 at 5 p.m. Pacific.“America is still segregated and so is pollution,” says Bullard, Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at Texas Southern University. With more than four decades of action advocating for racial equality and fair environmental and urban planning, Bullard is widely considered the father of the environmental justice movement. He was founding director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University and is the award-winning author of 18 books that address sustainable development, environmental racism, climate justice, community resilience, regional equity and more. In 2019, Apolitical named him one of the world’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy and, in 2020, the United Nations Environment Program honored him with its Champions of the Earth Lifetime Achievement Award.

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Dr. David N. Pellow, UC Santa Barbara Dehlsen Chair of Environmental Studies and Director of the Global Environmental Justice Project.

ABOUT

DR. ROBERT BULLARD

 

Heralded as the father of environmental justice, Robert D. Bullard is Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at Texas Southern University. He is founding director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University, co-founder of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Climate Change Consortium and former Dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, also at Texas Southern University.

 

Dr. Bullard is the award-winning author of eighteen books on sustainable development, environmental racism, urban land use, industrial facility siting, community reinvestment, community resilience and more. His latest works include Race, Place and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina,Environmental Health and Racial Equity in the United States, and The Wrong Complexion for Protection, and his 2000 book, Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality, is a standard text in the environmental justice field.

 

Among his many accolades, Bullard was the first African American recipient of the Sierra Club John Muir Award and was named one of 13 Environmental Leaders of the Century by Newsweek, one of 22 Climate Trailblazers by the Golbal Climate Action Summit, and one of the world’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy by Apolitical. In 2020, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) presented him with its Champions of the Earth Lifetime Achievement Award, the UN’s highest environmental honor.

 

Bullard received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University and is a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

 

DR. DAVID N. PELLOW

 

Professor David N. Pellow is the Dehlsen and Department Chair of Environmental Studies and Director of the Global Environmental Justice Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he teaches courses on environmental and social justice, race/class/gender and environmental conflict, human-animal conflicts, sustainability and social change movements that confront our socio-environmental crises and social inequality. He has volunteered for and served on the boards of directors of several community-based, national and international organizations dedicated to improving the living and working environments for people of color, immigrants, indigenous peoples and working class communities, including the Global Action Research Center, the Center for Urban Transformation, the Santa Clara Center for Occupational Safety and Health, Global Response, Greenpeace USA and International Rivers.

Race to Justice: This is a moment of reckoning. As a nation, we are confronting evidence of inequality that reaches every corner of society. Arts & Lectures has a history of bringing complex issues to the forefront. Now, we are spearheading an in-depth look at systemic racism from every angle, including abolition, underlying conditions, reparations, criminal justice and more. Interdisciplinary and cross-departmental, this season-long series engages leading activists, creatives and thinkers to expand our understanding of racism and how race impacts society and to inspire an expansive approach to advancing racial equality.
