OXNARD — The 2014 Fiestas Patrias celebration opens with ‘Certamen Señorita Fiestas Patrias Traje Tipico” (traditional dress) competition at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24 at Pacifica High School, 600 E. Gonzalez Road, Oxnard, the Comité Cultural Mexicano and Lazer Broadcasting reported in a media release.
Participants who will be wearing traditional dress representing various states of México include:
- Stephanie Gamboa — Yucatán
- Bianca Hernández — Colima
- Rebecca Fausto — Jalico
- Yonelida Alamillo — Chiapas
- Jazmine Mauricio — Districto Federal
- Nallely Miranda — Zacatecas
- Itandehui Moralez — Puebla
- María Elena Cisneros — Durango
- María de la Luz Gutíerrez — Tlaxcala
There is a suggested $5 donation for the traditional dress event.
Other Fiestas Patrias events include:
- The gala dinner and crowning of the Fiestas Patrias queen (“Cena-Gala de Coronación“) will be held from 5:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Ventura Beach Marriott Hotel, 2055 E. Harbor Blvd., Ventura. There is a suggested donation of $60.
- The Fiesta in the Plaza (“Fiesta en la Palcita de Oxnard”) will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13; from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14 and from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15 at Plaza Park in downtown Oxnard.
- The Fiestas Patrias 2014 parade (“Desfile Commemorativo“) will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14 on C Street in downtown Oxnard.
- The traditional Cry for Independence (“Grito de Independencia“) will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15 at Plaza Park in downtown Oxnard.
