New Junior Lifeguard training programs at the Simi Valley and Yarrow YMCAs

WESTLAKE VILLAGE — Those interested in becoming lifeguards can take the first step by enrolling in one of the YMCA’s new Junior Guards programs. The programs provide an introduction to basic lifeguard and leadership skills training. Two summer sessions are available and take place at the Simi Valley Family YMCA and the Yarrow Family YMCA (in Westlake Village).

Participants learn water safety, hands-on CPR, first aid, emergency response and small craft and open water safety. Classes are three times a week. An Intro to Junior Guards program is for ages 9 through 12 years old and a Junior Guards program is for ages 13 through 15.

Second Session of Southeast Ventura County YMCA STEM Club For Middle Schoolers Begins January 19

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA and the Columbia Memorial Space Center’s second unit of their STEM Club for local middle schoolers begins January 19 online. The session focuses on solar chemistry and runs through March 26.

Middle schoolers meet online Tuesday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Yarrow YMCA Opens 9,000 Square Foot Outdoor Fitness Facility

The Yarrow Family YMCA in Westlake Village has opened a nearly 9,000 square foot covered outdoor fitness facility in its back parking lot (31105 East Thousand Oaks Blvd.). The facility opened November 2.

The exercise area contains cardio equipment and weights to provide members an opportunity to workout in a COVID-compliant setting until Los Angeles County officially enters the red tier level and gyms can reopen indoors.
