Guest commentary — The 805’s Quiet Burnout Problem: Why Leaders Wait to Ask for Help

From Thousand Oaks to Paso Robles, the 805 runs on people who carry a lot. Scientists and managers in the biotech corridor along the 101. Growers and packers on the Oxnard Plain and in the Santa Maria Valley. Winery owners, hospital department heads, defense contractors, university researchers, and the founders of the small companies that grow out of all of them.

These are people who are good at holding steady. That is exactly why so many of them wait years to ask for help.

As a licensed clinical social worker, I see the same pattern again and again in high-responsibility jobs. The person keeps performing. The calendar stays full. Underneath, sleep gets shorter, patience gets thinner, and the evenings belong to email. Nobody at work notices, because nothing at work has slipped yet.
