A grateful THANK YOU for supporting the School of Management yesterday on Cares Day!
Our entire community of alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends came together to help us Reach for the Stars and meet both of our giving challenges to unlock an extra $20,000, thanks to Jeffrey ’91 and Lia Brouelette and Herbalife! We received a total of 166 gifts for a total of $62,931 to support our future business leaders of tomorrow.
If you were tied up yesterday and weren’t able to give, there is still time. Choose your passion and consider a contribution to one of our four funds:

Help us Reach for the Stars, today, on Cal Lutheran Cares Day! As an important member of our School of Management (SOM) Community, we’d love your support today so we can continue to provide educational opportunities for the next generation of business leaders.
We are raising funds for four different causes, and you can choose what you are most passionate about. This year, the School of Management’s goal is to double our donors.

We are coming down to the wire, just a few more days/hours to vote in both competitions! We have surpassed our goal of 800 participants voting by 400% but we want more. If you haven’t seen the work of our students, check it out today and select your favorites. The PRiME Competition closes on Tuesday followed by the New Venture Fair on Wednesday.

This has been a year like no other but the School of Management is still going strong. We persevere because we have a beautiful community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members! We kept you engaged, for example, by offering all of our events online with complimentary registration, we started several new webinar series for continued learning and kept you up-to-date through our many social channels. We also did our best to make you proud: We achieved full professional business school accreditation by ACBSP and we repurposed a generous gift by Mr. Steven Dorfman to benefit high-achieving students and our many efforts in entrepreneurship. Now we request your assistance during Cares Day to help us in continuing the good work with the next generation of students.

What do these events have in common? All 3 our community can participate in, in April. Our PRiME Competition and New Venture Fair are annual student competitions and are an integral part of our School of Management programs. Experiential learning is an ever more important element of cutting-edge education. Both our undergraduate and graduate students have options to test their newly acquired knowledge and skills against other students in these types of competitions. Once again we invite our community to get involved virtually in voting for the People’s Choice Awards. Voting is April 21-27. Watch for announcements. During Cal Lutheran’s CARES DAY on April 7th, the School of Management will be raising funds for student competitions like these. Your generous gift would go towards participation fees and other required resources necessary to take part in these outstanding experiential learning opportunities. Early giving is open now, at SOM Cares Day

We’re going virtual again this year
As we’re sure you’re already aware, the recent surge of the COVID-19 Delta variant has led to reduced confidence by many for attending in-person events and the reinstatement of certain safety protocols that limit indoor gatherings. We have therefore made the difficult decision to move the 2021 Executive Talent Management Forum to fully virtual delivery following multiple requests from attendees as well as strict updates to the Cal Lutheran campus visitor policy regarding these concerns.

We learn how to manage money in very different ways. Some of us are lucky to have excellent role models at home. For example, Professor Chien watched, learned, and modeled after her parents at a very young age. Her mom gave her allowance to manage her breakfast and lunch throughout her school years. She was part of a savings club where she saved into a simple saving book weekly. These simple habits shaped Professor Chien’s financial behaviors.

Mon., November 22 | 5:00 PM (PDT)
Jeremy Greene, vice president and head of data science at Retina AI, will join us to discuss careers in the field and what makes a good data scientist. This is an interactive, virtual event. Greene will take audience questions.

Learn how RKS Design, a globally recognized design and innovation consulting firm whose mission is to move people through design, is working through the COVID-19 crisis. Our guest speaker is Ravi Sawhney, founder and CEO of RKS Design and member of the Dean’s Executive Council at California Lutheran University’s School of Management. Mr. Sawhney will discuss personal and organizational strategies that have been employed, due to the crisis, at RKS Design. This short 45-minute webinar will include both a presentation by Mr. Sawhney and a Q&A session with our virtual audience, moderated by Dean Gerhard Apfelthaler.

History has shown that crisis creates opportunity for innovation. In this session, Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning Larry Clark and Mary Anne Amato will share insights into four key shifts that occur in times of crisis that foster the conditions for new thinking and doing. They will also share Harvard’s research on key ways that leaders can maintain the effect of these shifts beyond a crisis so an innovation mindset becomes embedded in the culture of their organizations. The session will have a brief 25-minute presentation followed by open Q&A.
