SANTA MARIA — Allan Hancock College is hosting its second annual wine festival at the college’s Santa Maria campus and is inviting the public to attend.
The college is currently selling tickets to its second West Coast College and University Wine Festival, which will take place on Saturday, June 8, from 1-4 p.m. This year’s festival is sponsored by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The festival will include wines from eight community college and university winemaking programs, including Hancock, Cal Poly, Napa Valley College, Fresno State University and colleges from Oregon, Washington State and Arizona. In addition, the festival will also feature wines from 11 California wineries including Flying Goat Cellars, Amplify Wines, El Vinero, and others.

Through June 30 — Music, Rides, Food and Fun At 68th Annual Conejo Valley Days
THOUSAND OAKS — The 68th Annual Conejo Valley Days (CVD) will feature 10 days of carnival rides, food and live entertainment. Dates are through June 30 (dark, June 24 and 25) at Conejo Creek Park South (23 Freeway/Janss Rd. exit) in Thousand Oaks.
Kastl Amusements will operate over 15 rides plus midway games for all ages at CVD as well as offer traditional fair and specialty foods. The Thousand Oaks Elks Club will be serving tri-tip sandwiches and other favorites.
This year, CVD is bringing back its “Whiskeroo Contest” Sunday, June 23 at 3:00 p.m. on the CVD Carnival Stage. To enter, call or text Steve Comstock, Whiskeroo Contest organizer, at 805-908-2248. VENTURA — The City of Ventura’s annual 4th of July Street Fair and Pushem-Pullem Parade returns on Thursday, July 4, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Ventura’s Downtown District.
The Pushem-Pullem Parade, presented by the Rotary Club of East Ventura, will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Main Street in front of Cemetery Memorial Park and continue into the Street Fair in Downtown Ventura. No registration is required.
This year’s Street Fair features artisan vendors, a car exhibit, live entertainment, a kids’ activity area, a corn hole zone, and more. Attendees can also enjoy Downtown’s local shops and outdoor dining as part of Main Street Moves.

SOLVANG — The California Nature Art Museum is pleased to announce California’s Changing Landscape: The Way of Water, an upcoming solo exhibition by renowned photographer George Rose on view through July 8, 2024 at The Wildling Museum, 1511-B Mission Drive in Solvang. Featuring more than 20 large-format documentary inkjet photographs of the Golden State, this timely exhibition showcases Rose’s recent expansive documentation of California’s dramatic water story.

July 14 — Bilingual report — Museum of Ventura County to present ‘Threading Together: Weaving Our Indigenous Heritage’
VENTURA — Experience the artistry of Zapotec weaving firsthand in a dynamic showcase and demonstration presented in collaboration with MICOP.
The artist in charge of these weaving workshops is Eduardo Jiménez. Jiménez is from Teotitlán del Valle, a town of 5,000 inhabitants, twenty miles from the city of Oaxaca, famous for its ancestral weavings. Jiménez’s style of weaving is extremely popular in Teotitlán del Valle and is one that uses the pedal loom, which was incorporated by the Spanish kingdom during the conquest of the Americas to speed up its process.
July 14 — ‘California, Quilted: Wild in the Oak Woodland’ to open at California Nature Art Museum in Solvang
From butterflies to bullfrogs to bobcats, Oak Woodland habitats support thousands of animal species all over California. Inhabitants might find shelter in the open grasslands between trees, scattered shrubs, fallen logs, streams, and tree canopies. The wonders of this important habitat – its creatures, colors, and lines of the land – all inspire Julia Laraway’s collection of fabric collages and quilts featuring flora and fauna of the coastal oak woodland.

Lola (Franka Potente) answers a call from her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtru), a small-time courier for a big-time gangster. He has a problem: His boss is coming to pick up 100,000 Deutsche Marks in twenty minutes, and he doesn’t have the money. With Manni’s life on the line, Lola runs through the streets of Berlin to reach him and somehow pick up 100,000 marks along the way, making split-second decisions and encountering acquaintances, family, and strangers. As the clock ticks down, the tinies choices become life-altering (or life-ending), and the fine line between fate and fortune begins to blur.

My passion for the arts began at the ripe old age of 2, when I began occupying myself for hours creating complex architectural structures out of color-coordinated building blocks.
Competing passions for acting, dancing, and singing manifested themselves slightly later in life at the age of 4 though my brilliant living room portrayals of Jennifer Beals in Flashdance, with whom I was obsessed.

SANTA BARBARA — The Cottage Heart & Vascular Center presents a FREE Virtual Meet the Doctor event on Thursday, July 18, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., featuring interventional cardiologist and structural heart specialist Dr. Joseph Aragon, MD, FACC, FSCAI who will provide valuable insights on advances in valve replacement.
Dr. Aragon will discuss how advances in valve replacement have significantly improved the diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for patients with heart disease. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), the MitraClip procedure for mitral valve repair, and the latest breakthrough in valve repair, the TriClip.

The Music Academy of the West’s Arancia Quartet, made up of 2024 String Quartet Seminar fellows Miyabi Henriksen, violin; Steven Song, violin; Sheng-Chieh Jason Lan, viola; Shijie Ma, cello perform Gabriella Smith’s Carrot Revolution. The piece—originally commissioned by an art museum—is a patchwork of Smith’s wildly contrasting influences, unexpected juxtapositions, and intersecting planes of sound, celebrating the spirit of fresh observation.

This is the first time since 2012 that the nonprofit, professional theatre company of California Lutheran University has produced these two plays.

In the rural alpine hamlet of Mizubiki, not far from Tokyo, Takumi and his daughter, Hana, lead a modest life gathering water, wood, and wild wasabi for the local udon restaurant. Increasingly, the townsfolk become aware of a talent agency’s plan to build an opulent glamping site nearby, offering city residents a comfortable “escape” to the snowy wilderness. When two company representatives arrive and ask for local guidance, Takumi becomes conflicted in his involvement, as it becomes clear that the project will have a pernicious impact on the community.

Through Sept. 8 — Santa Paula Art Museum presents Christopher Noxon’s ‘Greenbelt: Interplay and Imagination on the Edge of Wildness’
Born in Los Angeles to a family of filmmakers and writers, Christopher Noxon began his career as a journalist and illustrator. His writing and illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, New York Times Magazine, and several of his own books.
In 2020, Noxon moved out of L.A. to Ojai. He also became steward to a large collection of paintings and drawings by his late grandmother, Betty Lane (1907-1996). Looking to Betty’s art and the work of other artists, including Huichol yarn paintings and Fauve painters like Henri Matisse, Noxon taught himself to paint.

Lia, a retired school teacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbor Achi that her long lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey. Hoping to bring Tekla home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search. Oct. 7 — Oxnard Film Society to present screening of ‘CLOSE YOUR EYES (Cerrar los ojos)’
Set in contemporary Madrid, an aging filmmaker named Miguel Garay is called upon to recount his memories of working on his final and still unfinished film, “The Farewell Gaze.” During its production, the lead actor and Miguel’s close friend, Julio Arenas, disappeared without a trace, leaving in his wake a mystery that would haunt the lives of everyone associated with the film. Miguel never directed another project, instead living a quiet life as a writer by the coast. He remained reluctant to unravel the mystery surrounding Julio until approached by an investigative television program reviving the case decades later. With careful reflection, he reconnects with the film’s crew, former lovers, and Julio’s daughter, seeking closure for the disappearance and what it meant for all of their lives. SANTA BARBARA — Rooted Santa Barbara County presents Rooted in Community, the second annual bilingual plant-powered fall festival on Sunday, Oct. 13 from 2-7 pm at the Community Arts Workshop, 631 Garden Street in Santa Barbara. Featuring a food court, live music, story-telling, art projects, trivia, giveaways, and a “Chopped”-like competition, the event celebrates the role of plant-centered nutrition in equipping our community with more health-care options. Attendees can enjoy this event in either English or Spanish, thanks to simultaneous interpretation by Bridging Voices-Uniendo Voces.
Oct. 13 — Santa Barbara Museum of Art to present ‘Mary Cassatt’s Alterity and her Radical Modernism’
Owing to her American passport, identity as an upper-class woman, family money, and her identification with the Impressionist group in Paris, Mary Cassatt’s choice of subjects, and the style of both her painting and intaglio printmaking were singular. The lecture will focus on the radical monstrosity of her so-called “mother and child” pictures, and the technical virtuosity and indirection of her intaglio prints.

Oct. 19 — Halloween Fun At Simi Valley YMCA’s Fall Festival & Trunk-Or-Treat
SIMI VALLEY — The Simi Valley Family YMCA is hosting its annual Fall Festival and Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday, October 19 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The Simi YMCA is at 3200 Cochran St.
The festival features over 20 fall and Halloween-themed decorated car trunks where YMCA childcare staff pass out candy. A pumpkin patch, pumpkin decorating, carnival games and crafts, inflatables, glitter tattoos and a petting zoo are also part of the fun. A haunted hallway is from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (kid-friendly version) and 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (spookier version). Visitors are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costumes.

SANTA BARBARA — The Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) presents a free family day in celebration of Día de los Muertos on Sunday, Oct. 20, 11 am – 4 pm, in the Museum’s Front Terrace, Family Resource Center, and galleries. SANTA BARBARA — UCSB Arts & Lectures presents An Evening with Percival Everett on Friday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Campbell Hall.Percival Everett is one of the most prolific and innovative writers of our time. The author of more than 30 books, including novels, poetry and short story collections, he has won numerous awards and been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent novel, James, a retelling of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of a very different, highly literate version of the fugitive slave Jim, is currently a finalist for the National Book Award and shortlisted for the Booker Prize. In 2024, American Fiction, the film based on Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. With sharp observations and biting wit, Everett explores race, politics, gender and family from a uniquely contemporary American perspective.

OXNARD — The 110’ schooner Mystic Whaler will be celebrating Halloween and the Channel Islands Harbor Parade of Frights event on Saturday, October 26.
The community is invited to bring their little ghosts, goblins, and witches to trick-or-treat at Mystic Whaler’s dock from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.
Then at 6:30 p.m., Mystic Whaler will begin boarding for the Viewing Party for the Parade of Frights. This is a ticketed event. Tickets are available at https://www.centralcoastoceanadventures.org/special-events. (All proceeds from ticket sales go towards Mystic Whaler’s educational programs for local youth). Guests will view the Parade of Frights from Mystic Whaler’s deck while they enjoy hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages. This is a non-sailing event.

Named the biggest pop star of the West African nation of Mali by Rolling Stone, Habib Koité’s sophisticated acoustic guitar technique brings the pentatonic tuning of the griot’s traditional kora to the slashing solos of classic rock. Koité’s soulful voice and magnetic personality have made him an international star of contemporary world music and inspired collaborations with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Eric Bibb. In this all-star ensemble, two other standard bearers of West African musical traditions join Koité: kora player Lamine Cissokho and balafon master Aly Keïta.

This unique outing invites “Bigs” (mentors) with their “Littles” (mentees) out for a day of adventure, learning, and connection in support of mentorship. In 1975, Pierre Goldman (Cesar Award-winner Arieh Worthalter), a fiery and controversial figure of revolutionary left-wing activism, was put on trial in France. Accused of multiple crimes including two murders, Goldman proclaims his innocence. Considered to be the trial of the century, the Goldman case divided an entire country and reflects the political, ideological and racial tensions which marked the 1970s in France and Europe and still remain relevant today.
Nov. 7 — CLU to present ‘The Doctor in Spite of Himself’ Prescribes Laughter
THOUSAND OAKS —The French playwright Molière mocked bourgeois pretentiousness and the medical profession over 350 years ago in “The Doctor in Spite of Himself.” These timeless themes shine through in California Lutheran University’s Theatre and Dance Department student production. Premiering Nov. 7, the play runs through Nov. 17, with performances Thursday through Saturday evenings and a Sunday matinee. Performances are in the Black Box Studio Theatreon the Cal Lutheran campus.
