Through Sept. 17 — Santa Barbara Museum of Art Presents The Private Universe of James Castle: Drawings from the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation and James Castle Collection and Archive

With more than 90 works, this exhibition features many of the most beautiful and accomplished drawings created by the extraordinarily gifted, self-taught artist James Castle (1899 – 1977). The Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) represents the sole venue for this show, which highlights the artist’s remarkable technical skills and attempts to foster a better understanding of his evocative and unconventional images, particularly his landscapes and architectural interior scenes. Unfortunately, the common perception of Castle and his art has tended to be very limited due to emphasis on his physical impairments—he was profoundly deaf and largely mute—and his geographic isolation, working in rural Idaho.

SANTA BARBARA — Unite to Light, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing clean, renewable light and energy to people living without electricity, is partnering with REACH For Uganda to host the Mike Love Benefit Concert, an electrifying musical event with a purpose.

The concert aims to provide 2,000 solar powered Luke Lights to create Light Libraries at REACH For Uganda schools. A Light Library is where schools possess a number of solar-powered Luke Lights for students to “check out.”

“Feast or Flop” is an engaging online cooking show that combines the culinary world with the treasures of the Museum of Ventura County’s archives. Each episode takes viewers on a journey through our county’s history as MVC Collections Manager Renee Tallent uncovers recipes that have been tucked away for years. Working with regional chefs, Renee attempts to recreate these dishes to see if they are a delicious Feast or a disastrous Flop.

MVC’s 150th Anniversary cooking show will launch with Episode 1 Tuesday, September 19, and a new episode will follow every second week after through November 28. Along with each episode, viewers can look over the vintage recipe to try it out in the comfort of their own kitchen!

SOLVANG — The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is pleased to present its third juried exhibition showcasing California’s nine national parks this fall. California National Parks: Stories of Water will feature 37 artists and 39 selected artworks juried from a pool of more than 240 submissions by artists across the U.S., competing for $4,000 in awards. The public is invited to attend an opening reception and awards ceremony at the Wildling on Sunday, September 24, 2023 from 3 – 5 p.m.

The exhibition explores various impacts of water – or its lack – in California’s national parks through a wide range of media and techniques, from acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings, to photography, mixed media, and textile art.

OXNARD — Mystic Whaler, the educational schooner of Central Coast Ocean Adventures Foundation (CCOAF), will be returning to Santa Barbara Harbor on October 3 for a month of experiential educational programming.

Local students will be “Sailing Through Time” in a new and exclusive educational program developed by CCOAF for the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The 5-hour program will take students from the present into the past. Using skills such as math, science, and technology as well as teamwork, determination, and problem-solving, students will be presented with a series of challenges from raising sail to navigation. This program is designed to not only instill a connection of empathy and understanding with our past but to encourage pride in hard work well done and inspire ambitions in personal education and growth.

SANTA BARBARA — Senior Expo of Santa Barbara County is back and even better than ever! Taking place at Earl Warren Showgrounds on Wednesday October 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Senior Expo is Santa Barbara’s premier event for seniors and caregivers offering a plethora of activities and information to stay healthy and active. A $5 admission fee provides access to flu vaccines and multiple health assessments, and over 100 exhibits.

Halted for three years because of the COVID pandemic, Senior Expo is now in its 32nd year and expects to draw 1,200 seniors, family members, and caregivers seeking resources to improve their quality of life.

This year, flu shots will be provided by Rite-Aid, including a senior’s dose for those 65 and older. Anyone wanting a flu shot must bring their prescription insurance card, otherwise, Rite-Aid will schedule them for a vaccine at a date of their convenience.

Recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century, Martha Graham single-handedly defined contemporary dance as a uniquely American art form. In this evening of new and reimagined works framing a Graham classic, the company performs Hofesh Shechter’s high-energy CAVEand Graham’s Dark Meadow Suite, an abstract work about life’s journey and the search for connection with one’s self and one’s community. THOUSAND OAKS — On Oct. 6, California Lutheran University’s William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art opens “Print+: Sameness & Otherness in Contemporary Print Media,” a show that presents works of protest and resistance by 22 artists from different backgrounds who use the tools and techniques of printmaking in novel ways. The opening corresponds with Cal Lutheran’s annual homecoming weekend and will be on display through Feb 1.

Multidisciplinary artist Sheila Goloborotko, the curator for “Print+,” said in her curatorial statement that the exhibit “focuses on the importance of showcasing artwork where diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion create an essential and fertile ecology.”

The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is pleased to announce Sedgwick Reserve: A Conservation Story, on view through October 16, 2023 in the Valley Oak Gallery. The public is invited to attend a reception with the artists on Sunday, April 16th from 3 – 5 p.m. at the Wildling.

Unknown to many visitors, and even some local residents, Sedgwick Nature Reserve is an important gem nestled in the foothills of the San Rafael Mountains in the Santa Ynez Valley. One of seven reserves managed by the University of California Santa Barbara Natural Reserve System, Sedgwick is among the largest and most diverse reserves of its kind in the country. Comprised of just under 6,000 acres, or about 9 square miles, Sedgwick hosts several different kinds of habitats: oak savannah, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, gray pine forest, vernal pools, and two different watersheds. Managed by UCSB, Sedgwick has become a world-class research, conservation, and education facility.

VENTURA — Tickets are on sale for Ventura College Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Gala, Friday, October 20 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Museum of Ventura County (100 East Main Street, Ventura). The gala will celebrate the successes of Ventura College students and the decades of board leadership and dedicated donors.

The VC Foundation began in 1983 to help remove the financial barriers that often prohibit students from reaching their education goals. According to Ventura College data, 52 percent of the college’s current 10,000-student population is classified as extremely low-income or low-income.

SANTA PAULA — As summer gracefully transitions into autumn and the season of decorating our homes begins, the Santa Paula Parks & Recreation Department is thrilled to announce “Santa Paula Beautiful Day.” This community volunteer event aims to unite residents of all ages once again in a collective effort to engage in civic beautification.

Join us on this special day as we embark on a project to prepare Santa Paula for thousands of Ventura County residents who will be visiting Santa Paula on October 21, 2023, for the County’s “Mountains to Sea Jubilee & Music Festival” to celebrate the County’s 150th Anniversary.

VENTURA COUNTY — Join us at the Mountains to Sea Jubilee in the city of Santa Paula! The event kicks off with a FREE family-friendly festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Museum of Ventura County’s Agricultural Museum, 926 Railroad Avenue, Santa Paula.

The Mountains to Sea Jubilee is the culmination of the County of Ventura’s 150th Anniversary celebration and will feature performances and participation from community partners and organizations from across the County. Through a collaborative partnership, the County of Ventura and the Museum of Ventura County have commemorated the sesquicentennial anniversary of the County with a series of public events.

MOORPARK — The Curious Savage is coming to The Moorpark College Performing Arts Center Mainstage Oct. 12-22. This uproarious 1950s comedy set in The Cloisters Sanitorium in Massachusetts follows the story of a flamboyant widow who is forcibly admitted to the sanatorium by her greedy stepchildren when she refuses to hand over her sizable inheritance.

“This play was very ahead of its time in terms of its message and structure,” said director and Theatre Arts faculty Suzanne Fagan. “It’s hysterical, and yet, by the end of the play, you’re blown away by the social commentary surrounding mental health, stigma, and family that’s been woven in throughout the story.”
