Bilingual report — Ventura County Public Works Agency Budgets Pavement Plan to Improve Road Safety and Quality

VENTURA COUNTY — The Board of Supervisors recently approved Ventura County Public Works Agency’s (VCPWA) Multi-Year Pavement Plan 2024 – 2028. The Road Repair and Accountability Act funds this Plan with a planned five-year budget of $45 Million.

VCPWA has plans to resurface 192 centerline miles (centerline miles represent the total length of a given road from a start point to an endpoint. The mileage does not include the size, number of lanes, or other features, like shoulders and turn lanes). Other works added to the paving projects are repairs to culvert and storm drains, curb and gutter, and sidewalks (which are reimbursed by the property owners). In addition, VCPWA will improve drainage, ADA access curb ramps, pavement widening at curves, and correct safety issues when feasible.

Today the Ventura County Board of Supervisors approved the acceptance of active transportation program cycle 6 grant funds for the Saticoy pedestrian project. This is the second state-sponsored Active Transportation Plan grant awarded to Ventura County Public Works Agency, and the $3.49m grant will be used for the Saticoy Area pedestrian improvement project, which was identified as the top priority project in the Saticoy Active Transportation Plan.

Illegal dumping is a serious problem for the communities in Ventura County. Waste poses an environmental threat to both humans and wildlife. Illegal dumping, along with a $3,000 fine plus clean-up costs and community service, can be avoided by locating the proper information on disposal and recycling options. Ventura County Public Works Agency’s “Don’t Dump On Me, VC!” campaign encourages the community to keep Ventura County beautiful by providing information on simple and easy ways to dispose of waste.

May 23 — Bilingual report — Ventura County Public Works to Host over 1,300 Local Students

For this year’s National Public Works Day on May 23rd, more than 1,200 students in Ventura County will visit the Ventura County Public Works Agency! National Public Works Day is an opportunity for kindergarten through high school students to learn about the world of public works. PWA provides water, sanitation, vertical construction, survey, grading, roads, transportation systems, controlling and conserving storm waters, and working as first responders for major events. This year’s theme, “Connecting the World Through Public Works,” highlights how public works professionals connect us through infrastructure, planning, and building.

VCPWA will transform the “G” lot at the Government Center into a display of heavy equipment and booths demonstrating the agency’s work. Local students will participate in interactive demonstrations focused on science, technological innovations, illustrations of current engineering projects, career opportunities, and more.

Three Ventura County businesses were recently approved for 4%, fixed-rate loans totaling $12,739,000 through the Ventura County Recycling Market Development Zone (RMDZ) program. The RMDZ is a statewide program consisting of 40 zones, and is administered in Ventura County by the Ventura County Public Works Agency.

Ventura County is challenging residents living in Ventura County unincorporated areas to work together to clean up their communities by disposing/recycling household materials. These events are provided on behalf of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, Ventura County Public Works Agency, Harrison Industries, and Waste Management.

Residents currently subscribed to trash, recycling, and green waste service through a County contract collector will receive a notice in the mail one (1) month prior to each event. All events will have minimum contact and will be drive-through. There will be assistance with vehicle unloading and all County Covid-19 guidelines will be followed.

The County of Ventura Public Works Agency has been awarded Employer of the Year for 2020-2021 by the International Right of Way Association (IRWA), Chapter 47. IRWA is a global, member-led organization of dedicated professionals whose purpose is to improve quality of life through excellence in infrastructure development.

In this case, the County of Ventura Public Works Agency provided technology and staff to ensure that Chapter meetings continued virtually during the pandemic with monthly programs continuing to show best practices on public works projects and real estate issues arising in the Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County areas.
