Summer Day Camp Registration Underway At Southeast Ventura County YMCA Branches

Branches of the Southeast Ventura County YMCA are taking early registrations for their summer day camps. Camp is from June 13 through August 19 at the Yarrow Family YMCA and June 6 through August 5 at the Simi Valley Family YMCA. A travel camp will be held at the Conejo Valley YMCA. Discounted weekly rates for those who register early are in effect until March 1.

Campers can attend full-time (five days a week) or part-time (three days a week) for the entire camp session or selected weeks. YMCA summer camp is offered to TK to 5th graders with a Leadership-In-Training camp for 6th to 8th graders.

Onsite activities include sports, arts and crafts and in-person shows. Each week will focus on a different theme including space, Olympic sports, traveling back in time, Disney adventures and exploring the outdoors. Camp activities are based on age group.

Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign Underway

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s annual fundraising campaign is now underway. Funds raised during the campaign (which runs through March 2) provide financial assistance to low-income individuals and families who would not otherwise be able to afford YMCA programs and resources.

“The pandemic continues to hit families hard,” says Ronnie Stone, Southeast Ventura YMCA CEO. “Your continued support allows the Y to serve our community during this difficult time. Everyone who wants to be part of the Y and participate in our programs can do so. No one is ever turned away because of an inability to pay.”

April 9, 10 — Lifeguard Certification Course at Triunfo Family YMCA

Just in time for the busy summer swim season, the Southeast Ventura County YMCA is offering a Red Cross lifeguard certification course at its Yarrow Family YMCA branch, Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10. The two-day program will be held in the Yarrow Y’s indoor pool (31105 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Westlake Village). Class hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The lifeguard certification class includes training in CPR/Automated External Defibrillator use and first aid. Participants will receive the skills to prevent, recognize and tend to injuries until emergency medical services arrive. This is a blended learning course with an online component to be completed prior to the start of the in-person class.

May 7 — Southeast Ventura County YMCA Free Hosts Annual Healthy Kids’ Day

Southeast Ventura County YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active during the summer. The YMCA’s Healthy Kids’ Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will feature crafts, face painting, inflatables, a poster contest, games, enrichment classes and a fun slime-the-Y-teacher activity. Healthy Kids’ Day will be held at the Yarrow Family YMCA in Westlake Village on Saturday, April 30 and at the Simi Valley Family YMCA on Saturday, May 7.

Grand Re-Openings At Simi Valley and Yarrow YMCAs

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA is celebrating a re-opening and major improvements to its Simi Valley branch and the re-opening of the Yarrow Family YMCA in Westlake Village. Tours, kid fun, entertainment, food and other activities will take place Saturday, January 8 at the Simi Valley Family YMCA (3200 Cochran St., Simi Valley) and Saturday, January 22 at the Yarrow Family YMCA (31105 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Westlake Village). Celebration hours are 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days. Free tacos will be served while they last.

Improvements at the Simi Y include an additional group exercise and fitness studio, a small-group training studio, remodeled locker rooms, new equipment, new paint, flooring and energy-efficient lighting. “It’s been years since the Simi Y had these kinds of upgrades,” says Ronnie Stone, President/CEO of the Y. “They were needed to better serve the Simi Valley community.”

POOLCORP Donates $70,000 To Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s Water Safety Program

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA received a $70,000 grant from POOLCORP to help fund the Y’s Safety Around Water (SAW) program and current and future lifeguard training.

POOLCORP made the donation at the Yarrow Family YMCA in Westlake Village on November 22.

Winter Camp Through Yarrow, Conejo and Simi Valley YMCAs

The three branches of the Southeast Ventura County YMCA are hosting camps during the winter school break. Camp dates are December 20 through 23 and December 27 through 30.

Camps provided by the Simi Valley Family YMCA, Conejo Valley YMCA and the Yarrow Family YMCA will include STEAM learning, group games, sports and holiday arts and crafts. Overseeing the camps are qualified staff who are CPR and first aid trained.

Camps in Simi Valley will be held at YMCA daycare locations at Atherwood Elementary and White Oak Elementary. Yarrow Family YMCA camps will be held at Sumac Elementary and Yerba Buena Elementary. Conejo Valley YMCA will be hosting its camp at Peach Hill Elementary in Moorpark.

Southeast Ventura County YMCA and Columbia Memorial Space Center Kick Off This Year’s STEM Club For Middle Schoolers

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA and the Columbia Memorial Space Center will begin their STEM Club for local middle schoolers. Meetings begin in November and run through December 16.

Students can sign up to meet in person at the Yarrow Family YMCA after school for 8 to 10 weeks. Students meet on Tuesdays with an additional voluntary meeting on Thursday afternoons.

Lifeguard Certification Course Offered at Triunfo Family YMCA

William Blunck Named Chief Operating Officer at Southeast Ventura County YMCA

William (Bill) Blunck has been named the Chief Operating Officer at the Southeast Ventura County YMCA.

Blunck has a long history in the recreation, fitness, and nonprofit field beginning as a lifeguard/swim lesson instructor at the age of 16 in Iowa. Other nonprofit roles include a 13-year career with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City where he served as Aquatics Director, Senior Membership Director, Membership Information Director and Executive Director. He was also on launch teams for the opening of five YMCAs during his time in Kansas City. Most recently, he was Director of Trail Point Aquatics & Wellness at Des Moines Area Community College. He led the opening of its 100,000 square foot recreation/student center.

Information Meetings For Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s Youth & Government

Information meetings are scheduled for the Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s three Youth & Government Model Legislature & Court delegation programs. Youth & Government is an opportunity for high school students to learn how government works and join other Youth & Government delegations from around California in a major conference in the legislative chambers at the State Capitol in Sacramento.

4th Annual Southeast Ventura County YMCA Gala Cancelled due to rising COVID-19 numbers

Citing the growing number of COVID-19 infections throughout the area, the Southeast Ventura County YMCA has decided to cancel its 4th Annual Gala that was set for Saturday, September 18 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village.

“After careful consideration of the rising uncertainty of the pandemic, our board and staff have decided to cancel our gala for 2021,” says Ronnie Stone, President/CEO of the Southeast Ventura County YMCA. “We look forward to hosting an in-person event in September of 2022.”

Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s Summer ‘Find My Genius’ Closes The Achievement Gap

Young scholars from two local school districts are taking part in “Find My Genius” this summer. The five-week program, sponsored by the Southeast Ventura County YMCA, Conejo Valley Unified School District and Las Virgenes Unified School District, is designed to reduce the achievement gap that often occurs over summer break.

The program is offered at no cost to low- and moderate-income students entering K-6thgrades who are not reading at grade level. Of the 240 children participating, half attend the program at Conejo Elementary School in Thousand Oaks and half attend at Sumac Elementary School in Agoura Hills.

22nd Annual YMCA National Day of Prayer Breakfast Will Be Online May 6th

Spiritual and community leaders will be part of the virtual Southeast Ventura County YMCA National Day of Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, May 6. This is the 22nd year the YMCA has hosted the Prayer Breakfast and the second year it has been held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speakers and performers will provide inspirational messages and song during the 40-minute program. Our keynote speaker this year is Dr. Gary Dickey, Retired Pastor of United Methodist Church, Chaplain of United States Air Force Auxiliary and Deputy Chaplain of California Civil Air Patrol.

Julie Birkett, YMCA’s ‘Find My Genius’ Teacher/Site Director, Named BellXcel’s “Educator of the Year”

Julie Birkett, fourth grade teacher at Sumac Elementary School in Agoura Hills and teacher/Site Director at the Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s “Find My Genius” summer learning program, was named “Educator of the Year” by BellXcel. BellXcel partners with school districts and community-based organizations to help close the education gap for students who are not performing at grade level. Birkett was selected out of over 1,000 teachers nationwide.

Birkett’s award was announced at a Zoom YMCA board meeting on Tuesday, March 16.

YMCA And Senior Concerns Seek Nonperishable Donations March 8-19 For Low-Income Seniors

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA and Senior Concerns are partnering to collect nonperishable grocery items to distribute to low-income seniors who are self-isolating because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Items will be collected through March 19 at the Yarrow Family YMCA in Westlake Village.

“We know many of our community’s seniors don’t want to go grocery shopping for fear of contracting COVID-19 and they don’t have family or friends who can do the shopping for them,” says Ronnie Stone, President and CEO of the Y.

Second Session of Southeast Ventura County YMCA STEM Club For Middle Schoolers Begins January 19

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA and the Columbia Memorial Space Center’s second unit of their STEM Club for local middle schoolers begins January 19 online. The session focuses on solar chemistry and runs through March 26.

May 22 — California Strong To Host A Drive-In Movie Fundraiser

California Strong’s next major fundraiser for California residents impacted by natural disasters and tragic events over the past few years is the drive-in showing of Major League on Saturday, May 22. Special contributions and appearances will be made by the founders of California Strong, as well as stars of the film Charlie Sheen and Bob Uecker.

Since its conception in 2018, California Strong has been focused on helping Californians struggling with their finances and livelihoods due to an array of disasters that have struck the state. The organization has raised over $2.6 Million and given grants to more than 1,400 families.

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA is holding a Welcome BBQ for parents and their children interested in taking part in YMCA Adventure Guides. The BBQ will be Saturday, September 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Yarrow Family YMCA (31105 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Westlake Village). The event is free and open to the community.

YMCA Adventure Guides is for fathers and their children. It is designed to strengthen and build a lifelong relationship between parent and child through outdoor adventure activities, camping trips and monthly events. Parent-child pairs join a “Circle” with families in their neighborhood or school. Campout locations include El Capitan, Catalina, Kern River and Big Bear.

Southeast Ventura County YMCA & Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station Give Away Almost 500 Toys

Staff members of the Southeast Ventura County YMCA and officers from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department gave away almost 500 toys on Thursday at the Yarrow Family YMCA in Westlake Village.

Toys were distributed to 120 young scholars (and their siblings) who participated in last summer’s “Find My Genius” YMCA program. In addition, each family received a $100 VISA debit card donated by the Lost Hills Sheriff Foundation. Families stayed in their cars while YMCA volunteers and sheriff officers handed out toys.
