We’re back after a well-deserved summer break
for our undergraduate faculty members, and a successful start into the new academic year.
At the beginning of the semester, the School of Management welcomed 164 new undergraduate freshmen and transfer students and 91 new graduate students who enthusiastically look forward to their educational journey. We have a
lot in store for them and, of course, our wider community – including YOU! On October 2nd, we will kick off this year’s ForwardTogether webinar series with School of Management Executive MBA alumnus John Maier, CEO of Bose Professional, followed by our 9th Annual Executive Talent Management Forum on October 10 and Startup Weekend Conejo Valley from October 11-13 at our own startup community space Hub101. I hope to see many of at one of these events where you can explore interesting topics, and meet and mingle with our faculty, staff, and students!

More recently, he has led the carveout of Bose Professional from Bose Corporation and will discuss the unique challenges of separating a division from an established business and re-branding that business.

April 17 — CLU School of Management to present ‘The Business of Sports.’ Other event on May 1

Join us for an in-depth discussion about the business of sports with executives from Angel City Football Club of the National Women’s Soccer League and Cal Lutheran’s Sports Management Program Director Mark Orlando.

Angel City FC players will participate in a question-and-answer session. After the event, they will be on-hand for photos and an autograph signing.

The New Venture Fair (NVF) is a valuable part of Cal Lutheran’s entrepreneurial education experience, in which student teams share their innovative startup projects in a competitive environment. Oct. 10 — CLU School of Management to present ‘AI in the Workplace: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities’

 “As AI is adopted across industries for automation, decision-making and data-driven insights, we will see growth rates that very few sectors have ever seen,” said Gerhard Apfelthaler, dean of the School of Management at Cal Lutheran. “By 2030, the global AI market is expected to expand to $1.3 trillion.”

President of the Centre for International Cooperation and Public Management Studies (CECIG)
Susana Cruickshank currently directs the civil society organization Centre for International Cooperation and Public Management Studies (CECIG), where she works on projects that accompany the day laborer population in the states of Morelos and San Luis Potosí and, as part of the “National Network of Day Labourers and Agricultural Day Labourers,” in Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Guanajuato, Chiapas, Guerrero, and other states. Her work at CECIG includes extensive research to produce comprehensive diagnoses and proposals on agricultural day laborers’ living, working, and wage conditions.

Good Sports: Finding and Involving Professional Athletes in your Startup

When Matthew Weisman and Jordan Orlick founded LetzChat, a real-time language translation service for video, websites, and SMS, their goal was to make it easier for people to connect with each other around the world. Little did they know that professional athletes would be a critical component of LetzChat’s go-to-market strategy as brand ambassadors, investors, and team members, including a COO who’s also an NFL Super Bowl Champion.

Feb. 16 — CLU School of Management to present ‘Conference on Economic & Social Lives of Undocumented Immigrants on the Central Coast of California’

According to the most recent information, some 104,000 undocumented immigrants live in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Some 87,000 of this group have come from our neighboring country, Mexico (83%). 

This conference unveils a comprehensive study of the socioeconomic profile of undocumented immigrants and their regional and statewide economic impacts. The economic impacts will be captured through gross regional products, labor income, employment, and tax revenue at local, state, and federal levels.  

March 28 — CLU School of Management’s Forward Together Webinar Series presents Anna Wikland, Country Director for Google Sweden

Anna Wikland has been the Country Director for Google Sweden for 7 years and is also part of the management team for Google in Northern Europe. In addition to this, she sits on the board of ICC Sweden and Spiideo and is an advisor to some other tech scale-ups.

March 29 — CLU School of Management — The Latino GDP Project: Those Who Overcome

The Latino GDP Project provides a factual view of the large and rapidly growing economic contribution of Latinos living in the United States. Using publicly available data from major U.S. agencies, it provides compelling evidence that Latinos are drivers of economic growth and a critical source of resilience for the U.S. economy. The total economic output (or GDP) of Latinos in the U.S. was $2.8 trillion in 2020, equivalent to the world’s fifth largest GDP. The hard work and persistence of Latinos bolstered the nation’s economy during the pandemic and are now driving economic recovery. Join Dr. Hayes-Bautista and Dr. Fienup as they discuss this narrative-changing research.
