Channel Islands Maritime Museum unveils Tall Ship exhibit at Zachari Dunes Hotel in Oxnard

OXNARD — The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is excited to announce a new partnership with the Zachari Dunes hotel, located just over a mile from the museum’s home in Channel Islands Harbor. This collaboration, beginning on September 17, 2024, brings a unique maritime experience to hotel guests with the installation of a spectacular tall ship model exhibit in the hotel’s lobby. The first ship to be displayed is the San Felipe, a famed Spanish galleon that sailed from 1690 to 1705, offering a glimpse into that captivating period of maritime history.

Feb. 2 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to Present the Art of Marie McKenzie

Beginning February 2, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) will be presenting its latest pop-up exhibition featuring the incredible artwork of Marie McKenzie.

Ojai-based artist Marie McKenzie places sustainability at the heart of her practice. Using salvaged wood and other earth-friendly materials, McKenzie creates abstract and figurative representations of marine flora and fauna with loving detail. The exhibit at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum will feature a variety of paintings and an ethereal wooden kelp sculpture. Art and environmentalism truly synthesize into something beautiful through Marie’s creations.

Through March 24 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to Present Exhibition Neil Brooks & The California Seascape

Beginning January 3, 2023, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) will be presenting its latest exhibition, Neil Brooks & The California Seascape in its Brenda and Gary Farr Gallery.

As a self-taught artist, Brooks captures the cultural ritual of the California beach day using a striking variety of mediums. Charcoal, watercolor, oil, and collage blend together in loose brushwork and rich color, inspired heavily by the Masters of the 20th century like Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. These works of fluctuating movement reflect the distinctive light and emotion of atmosphere in Southern California, delivering a contemporary and regional take on iconic, historic styles.

June 22 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to present An Evening with Simon Spalding ‘Food at Sea from Ancient to Modern Times’

Simon Spalding presents a sweeping panorama of food at sea, based on his book “Food at Sea – Shipboard Cuisine from Ancient to Modern Times.” Simon offers tantalizing stories of maritime culinary history, from the ingredients and practices of ancient Argonauts and Vikings through Renaissance explorers, sailing navies and merchant ships, steamships, ocean liners, cruise ships, and submarines.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum Announces Free Admission For All Young Visitors Under the Age of Eighteen

Beginning Sept 1., 2022, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum will offer free admission to visitors who are less than eighteen years of age. (Youths or children must still be accompanied by an adult or guardian). Senior and active military admission prices will remain at $5.00/person and adult admission will change to $10.00/person. The Museum will also continue to offer its Museums for Alldiscounted admission for those patrons who present EBT, SNAP, or CalFresh identification cards.

“As part of our goal to provide improved access to all, including families with children, it was decided that the Museum would eliminate admission fees for those under 18 years of age,’ said Museum Executive Director Adri Howe. “We certainly hope it will allow for more families to come to CIMM and help them to enjoy and learn about the wonders of the maritime experience and human creativity. Museums play an important role in our society and we very much believe that future museum lovers are created when people have access to museums, especially as youngsters.”

June 4 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to Present Short-Film Showcase

On Saturday, June 4, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum will be presenting its next short film showcase. The Locally Sourced showcase will bring viewers unique perspectives on aquaculture. The films include Dashi Journey, The Super Salmon, and Where There Is Trout. The screening will start at 4:00 pm at the Museum.

The film Super Salmon is an intimate and inspiring look into the impacts of the proposed Susitna-Watana dam on the Susitna River in south-central Alaska.

June 15 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum Speaker Series Presents Captain Christine Healy

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) is pleased to announce that Captain Christine Healy of the ship Mystic Cruzar, will be its featured speaker for June.

Captain Healy will share the journey of the beautiful tall ship Mystic Cruzar as she made her way from Connecticut to her new home of Channel Islands Harbor via the Panama Canal in the fall and early winter of 2021-22.

June 19 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to Celebrate Father’s Day with ‘Classics by the Sea’ Event

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum will be a hub of activity and fun on Father’s Day, June 19, 2022, as it celebrates the day with “Classics by the Sea.” This family-friendly event will feature a wonderful display of woodies and classic cars of all vintages, many one-of-a-kind, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  

The Museum will also be hosting its unique annual maritime treasure sale including used books, ship models and art. The event will feature live music and food (for purchase) will also be available.

July 9 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum Invites Public to Blessing Ceremony for New Wall Mural

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) is inviting the public to join it for a special blessing ceremony in honor of a soon-to-be-created mural at the Museum. Chumash Elder Alan Salazar will be conducting a traditional Chumash blessing ceremony at the mural site. Museum friends and the public are invited to join in the ceremony. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 9, at 11:00 am at the Museum which is located at 3900 Bluefin Circle, Oxnard.

Sept. 21 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum Welcomes Corinne Heyning Laverty to the CIMM Speaker Series

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is pleased to welcome author Corinne Heyning Laverty to its next Speaker Series event on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. She will be speaking on her remarkable book North America’s Galapagos: The Historic Channel Islands Biological Survey. 

This book recounts the story of a group of researcher04s, naturalists, adventurers, cooks, immigrants, and scientifically curious teenagers who came together in the late 1930s to embark upon a series of ambitious expeditions never before, or since, attempted. Their mission: to piece together the broken shards of the Channel Islands’ history and evolution. California’s eight Channel Islands, sometimes called “North America’s Galapagos,” each support unique ecosystems with varied flora and fauna and differing human histories. This untold saga of adventure, discovery, and goals abandoned is juxtaposed against the fresh successes of a new generation of Channel Island scholars.

Culture is Back! Oxnard Museums Set to Reopen

With the County of Ventura moving into the State’s Orange Tier this week, Oxnard museums are set to re-open after a long year of closures. The museums will follow health and safety guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), State of California, and County of Ventura to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The Murphy Auto Museum returned Saturday, April 3 with a “soft opening” and a “full-blown reopening” Saturday, April 10. The Murphy will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm. The museum features an impressive display of beautiful vintage automobiles and Americana; it is also home to the Fireball Art Gallery and Gold Coast Modular Rail Road Club.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum, Channel Islands Harbor Lessees Association host mini ‘Eco-Boat’ contest in April

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) is releasing more details on its upcoming April event/contest as part of its continuing 30th anniversary year celebration and Earth Day.

The Museum is calling for mini “eco-boat” contest entries which are boats that utilize recyclable or compostable materials. Entries should be no larger than 24” in length. Winning entries will be chosen based on the most creative use of materials. Wood, paper, glass, aluminum, cardboard, and plant fibers (including cotton fabric, canvas, hemp, twigs, leaves, non-nylon rope, etc.) are all acceptable materials. Plastics and foams may not be used in the construction of boats. Prizes will be awarded in four age categories: Adults (18 years and older), Young Adults (13-17 years of age), Kids (7-12 years of age), and Kids (6 years and younger). There will be one winner in each category. The Channel Islands Harbor Lessees Association is generously sponsoring the cash prizes for the contest.

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is proud to welcome Keri Dearborn and Mike Watling of Friends of the Island Fox to its 2021 Speaker Series on Wednesday, February 17th, starting 5:30 pm. Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, this will be an on-line event on the Museum’s website at www.cimmvc.org.

June 20 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to Celebrate Father’s Day with ‘Classics by the Sea’

The Museum will also be hosting a unique maritime treasure sale including used tools, books, ship models, and art. Live music will be provided by local favorite “Unkle Monkey” who will play from 12 pm to 3 pm.  

 Inside of the Museum, there will be knot-tying demonstrations the Museum will also be hosting live characters, in period costumes, from maritime history. The Museum’s current temporary exhibition, Art of the Sailor, will also be available for viewing

Aug. 8 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to sponsor “Harbor Search and Find Cruise” as part of its continuing 30th anniversary celebrations

On August 8, 2021, as part of its 30th-anniversary activities, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum will be sponsoring a Search & Find Harbor Cruise. Electric boats and dinghies less than 25 feet are invited to participate in this fun “Search & Find” Mission. Participants will enjoy a Museum visit, a harbor cruise with a mission, and the chance to win some great prizes. Pre-registration is required with a $30 donation to the Museum per boat. All proceeds benefit the Channel Islands Maritime Museum programs. Participants can register online at www.cimmvc.org or at the Museum until August 7th.

Nov. 13 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum Sponsors ‘In Gratitude’ Food Drive in Celebration of its 30th Anniversary

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is happy to announce its Friends of the Harbor “In Gratitude” Food Drive on behalf of Food Share Ventura County. The food drive will take place on Saturday, November 13, from 10 am to 4 p.m. at the Museum which is located at 3900 Bluefin Circle in Oxnard.

Adri Howe, Executive Director of the Museum, had this to say when asked about the food drive, “The Museum has spent the last 30 years as part of a wonderful local community and we are so grateful for its support. We couldn’t think of a better way to show our gratitude than to host a food drive for our friends and neighbors who need assistance during these still very challenging times. Our community has always been and continues to be a source of support for us, and we are eager to give back in any way we can.”

Dec. 11 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum to Host Holiday Lighting of the Tall Ship Mast Event

Channel Islands Maritime Museum will once again be hosting the Holiday Lighting of the Tall Ship Mast in the Museum’s outdoor courtyard. The event will take place from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Local music group the CocoKnots will be on hand to perform their live music with a tropical flair. There will also be a public sing-along to holiday favorites. At 6:30 pm Santa Claus will arrive to flip the switch to light up the iconic tall ship mast. Following the lighting ceremony, Santa will be on hand to meet and greet children until 7:00 pm. This is a free community event open to all.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum to Celebrate 30th Anniversary in 2021

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is proud to announce that it will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021. The Museum, which has served as a cultural hub in the Channel Islands Harbor since 1991, has a full calendar of events and exhibits planned as part of the anniversary year.

The dream of art collector and businessman Harry Nelson and his friend Martin V. (Bud) Smith, the Museum opened its doors in February of 1991 to rave reviews. Channel Islands Maritime Museum features works of fine maritime art dating back to the 1600s, ship models, and other maritime artifacts. The Museum has presented a wide variety of informative and engaging temporary exhibitions during its first 30 years as well as sponsoring large community events. The Museum is also visited by hundreds of local students each year.
