History has shown that crisis creates opportunity for innovation. In this session, Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning Larry Clark and Mary Anne Amato will share insights into four key shifts that occur in times of crisis that foster the conditions for new thinking and doing. They will also share Harvard’s research on key ways that leaders can maintain the effect of these shifts beyond a crisis so an innovation mindset becomes embedded in the culture of their organizations. The session will have a brief 25-minute presentation followed by open Q&A.
Through July 24 — Young Writers Camp Announces Free Online Offerings for 4th-12th Graders
The Young Writers Camp – a nonprofit program of the South Coast Writing Project at UCSB – announced plans to continue camp services this Summer through online offerings.
In support of families facing COVID-related challenges, there is no cost to register for Young Writers Camp Online. Family Service Agency of Santa Barbara County is hosting a virtual workshop, Youth Culture and Gang Activity in Lompoc, to help parents understand more about gangs in the Lompoc community and what they can do if they suspect their child is involved with one. Workshops in English and Spanish will take place via Zoom on Sunday, August 16 from 3 to 4 p.m. (English) and 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. (Spanish).
Sept. 12 — 18th Annual ‘Stand Up for Kids’ Gala – A Virtual Celebration Hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley (BGCGCV)
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley (BGCCGV) is going virtual this year for its 18th Annual ‘Stand Up for Kids’ Gala scheduled for Saturday, September 12 from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Presented via livestream, the Gala will include shared stories, Club member performances, and the recognition of individuals who have made a significant impact on the BGCGCV. The annual Gala helps to support over 4,300 youth in LA and Ventura county, providing programs during school, summer, and more.
Sept. 16 — Annual Heroes of Hospice of Santa Barbara Goes Virtual with Internationally known Pico Iyer, Honors Local Heroes
On Wednesday, September 16th, Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) will hold their 8th Annual Heroes of Hospice (HOH) event online to honor local community heroes with international Keynote Speaker, Pico Iyer.
Due to COVID-19, many events have been cancelled and postponed but HSB’s yearly event will go virtual with an hour-long online event. Each year, HSB recognizes the outstanding organizations and individuals who play a key role in service to those in the Santa Barbara community and/or support the organization’s mission of providing care to anyone experiencing the impact of a serious illness or grieving the death of a loved one. Girl Scouts of the USA invites you to celebrate our girls and their bright futures during Hispanic Heritage Month. This FREE virtual and interactive event will teach girls about citizen science and what it means to observe and engage in the world around them as it relates to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), a critical component of success in the 21st century.
During the one-hour interactive session conducted entirely in Spanish, girls will have the opportunity to learn dance moves from Broadway actors, have fun with games while learning about the scientific method, meet some surprise guests, and have the chance to win prizes such as a tablet. In addition to dancing, playing, and learning about the fun and magic of science, these events also serve as an opportunity to get a taste of what it means to be a Girl Scout – lots of adventure, learning, friendships, and fun at every turn.

Students from the ERHS Latinos Unidos club are collaborating with SMHS, DHS and PVHS students and teachers to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), in remembrance of loved ones and community members.
Nov. 12 — Homes with Heart VC Invites all Businesses with Heart to Virtual Seminar to Support Youth in Care and their Families
Business with Heart VC is a four-year-old initiative, of Homes with Heart VC, responsible for helping many families. Originally set up as a program comprised of business members that helped resource families and youth with discounts from each of the local businesses, the program has grown to become an exciting way to provide internships and jobs for our older youth, that will be expanding to biological families and all other families in need. The core of the program is to also help businesses with additional foot traffic and recognition through website, social media exposure, and new signage.

Women’s Economic Ventures (WEV) annual Celebration of Small Business is launching a Virtual Shop Local Market to safely bring shoppers to local small businesses this holiday season. The marketplace will feature more than 50 local, women-owned and minority-owned small businesses who are part of the WEV community. Through Dec. 20 — CSUCI Choir performs first virtual winter concert
CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI)’s first-ever virtual winter concert will celebrate women composers, whose work goes largely unrecognized by larger American orchestras.
“I’m promoting women composers because I’ve always used music specifically to speak to social justice issues such as underrepresented racial or LGBTQ groups,” said CSUCI Chorus Artistic Director KuanFen Liu, who holds a doctorate in musical arts.
Beginning on Friday Dec. 11 at 7 p.m., guests can visit the Channel Islands Choral Association at www.cicachoir.org and listen to “Celebrate Women Composers in Choral Music.” The winter concert will be available online through Dec. 20.
