PORT OF HUENEME — The Port of Hueneme, California, proudly hosted its annual Drive Out Hunger Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway today, providing 450 frozen turkeys and full holiday meal kits to active-duty military members and veterans from across Ventura County. The drive-thru event reflects the Port’s deep commitment to serving those who serve the nation.
On this day and every day, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our veterans and their families for their extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and service to our country.
More than 40,000 veterans and their loved ones call Ventura County and the Conejo Valley home, and I am proud to work on their behalf in Congress. Honoring our veterans is a responsibility that never ends, and neither does the work to ensure they receive the care, benefits, and support they have earned.
As Ranking Member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health, one of my top priorities is to identify disparities in care for veterans and to introduce, advocate for, and pass legislation that closes those gaps.
As a third-generation U.S. Navy Veteran, I’m filled with deep gratitude today for all who have worn the uniform in defense of our nation and the freedoms we hold dear.
My grandfather fought in World War II, my father served in Vietnam, and my own service was during the War on Terror — with two tours in Afghanistan.
Through those experiences, I had the honor of serving alongside remarkable people whose courage, sacrifice, and strength continue to inspire me every day. Their example reminds me that true leadership is rooted in service — in putting others before oneself and standing together for something greater.

This year will feature the first ever performance of “The Veteran,” by Barry De Vorzon. De Vorzon is an American composer, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He co-founded recording studio Valiant Records and made a name for himself as a film and television score composer, becoming a Grammy Award winner, Academy Award nominee, and a six-time Daytime Emmy Award winner. His tune, “Nadia’s Theme,” was released by A&M Records for the television soap opera The Young and the Restless, hitting No. 8 on the U.S. Top 40 that year. The title “Nadia’s Theme” was given to the song after the ABC television network used it in a montage of gymnast Nadia Com?neci’s performances during the 1976 Olympics. He later composed the tune, “It’s Christmas Once Again in Santa Barbara,” in honor of the town and the people he learned to love after moving to California from New York City. The song was later re-recorded with various other city names, including San Diego and San Francisco.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) (July 10) celebrates a landmark decision by U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante of New Hampshire, who issued a ruling blocking the Trump administration’s executive order seeking to strip automatic birthright citizenship from children born in the United States to undocumented parents. This decision marks a crucial victory for members of LULAC, the first organization to file a lawsuit challenging the administration’s attempt to undermine one of the most fundamental rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

VENTURA — Ventura College has been awarded a $150,000 grant through the Veterans Mental Health Demonstration Project. As one of only ten community colleges across California to receive this critical funding aimed at enhancing mental health and wellness support for veteran students, Ventura College will be able to commit even more resources to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment for veterans.
Provided through the California Chancellors Office, the grant aims to bolster mental health outreach and peer support for veterans transitioning from military to civilian life. These funds are particularly vital to Ventura College as its Veteran Resource Center (VRC) served more than 370 veteran students in the 2022-2023 school year.

Join the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum (CCVMM) to learn more about the new, special exhibit, “50 Years Beyond Vietnam,” unveiled in November 2023, specially co-curated in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the last American combat troops leaving Vietnam. This history talk will be presented by Dennis Hennessey, local US Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, and current board member of of Central Coast Vietnam Veterans of America (CCVVA), Chapter #982, Guadalupe.
The display was co-curated by CCVMM, CCVVA and Cal Poly History intern, Grant Kolassa to highlight the United States in Vietnam from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975, spanning the administrations of six U.S. presidents. The display includes topics such as the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Operation Rolling Thunder, the Battle of Ia Drang, the My Lai massacre, the antiwar movement, the Battle of Hamburger Hill, the Tet Offensive, the Paris Peace Talks and the Fall of Saigon.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The County of San Luis Obispo’s Veterans Services Office (VSO) proudly announces a family-friendly pop-up resource fair for Veterans and their families in Oceano. “The County of San Luis Obispo’s VSO is pleased to announce a benefits resource fair in Oceano sponsored by Alignment Health to connect our South County’s Veterans with access to resources that support a healthier, more resilient Veteran Community,” said Morgan Boyd, the County Veterans Services Officer. The event will occur on January 20th from 10 am-2 pm at the Oceano Elks Lodge, 410 Air Park Dr, Oceano.
SANTA MARIA — The Allan Hancock College men’s and women’s basketball programs will honor local first responders, veterans, and active-duty members of the military at the college’s inaugural Hometown Heroes Night on Jan. 31.
The event will feature two basketball games as the Bulldogs host Ventura College for a Western State Conference rivalry showdown. The men’s team will tip off first at 5 p.m., followed by the women’s game at 7 p.m. Both games will take place inside the Joe White Memorial Gymnasium at the college’s Santa Maria campus.
We welcome you to come gather with other veterans who served during the Vietnam War era for coffee, conversation, and comraderie. Two guest speakers, local Vietnam War combat veterans, will give a brief talk about their veteran stories, and the significance of March 29th, National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Coffee will be provided by local, veteran-owned roaster and cafe: Coastal Peaks Coffee. Muffins, pastries, water bottles and lite snacks will also be available.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the War Department moved to mobilize Filipino men living in the United States who had been barred from service by law, despite a forty year history of Philippine Scout service in the Army. On December 21, 1941, the United States Congress passed the Filipino Naturalization Bill, allowing a Filipino combat unit to be formed.
Join us in welcoming WWII historian and author, Marie Silva Vallejo for a FREE Author Talk on her book “Dauntless” on July 25th at the SLO Vets Hall, located at 801 Grand Avenue, San Luis Obispo, 93401.
Vallejo’s father served in the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments in the U.S. Army and the First Reconnaissance Battalion created by President Roosevelt. These units trained at military camps across the Central Coast of California, including Camp San Luis Obispo.
The Veterans Day parade will begin at 9 a.m. on S. B Street, starting at the corner of W. Third Street and traveling south on B Street around Plaza Park. Community members are encouraged to view the parade on B Street, between Third Street and Fifth Street. Featured parade participants include the Disabled American Veterans Ventura Chapter 24, United States Naval Sea Cadets Corp, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 33110 and the Oxnard High School Air Force JROTC.
This December the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum we reflect upon and celebrate our 2023 accomplishments while anticipating what 2024 will bring.
This Veterans Day, as our nation comes together to recognize the men and women who have served our nation in uniform, I want to take this opportunity to thank our servicemembers, veterans, and their families for their service.
In Congress, I am so privileged to represent Ventura County and the Conejo Valley, which boasts a proud and rich military history. In fact, over 40,000 veterans and their families call our region home. In Congress, I have made it my priority to ensure that we fulfill our solemn promise to serve our veterans as well as they have served our country. This is the duty that has guided my work as your Member of Congress and as a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
The Central Coast Veterans Museum was recognized at the dinner by the US Library of Congress (LOC) as a top contributor to the LOC Veterans History Project. The Museum, located at 801 Grand Avenue, in San Luis Obispo, was honored as the designated site on the Central Coast of California for veterans to record their oral histories as part of this nationwide project documenting the oral histories of America’s veterans, preserving the first person accounts of the men and women who have served our country, and civilians who worked in support roles to our armed forces during times of conflict.
VENTURA — County Clerk-Recorder & Registrar of Voters Michelle Ascencion announced the signatures in lieu of filing fee period will begin on September 14, 2023, for the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election. Candidates may submit a signatures in lieu petition (also called petitions in lieu) to cover all or any prorated portion of the filing fee required to run for certain offices.
The signatures in lieu petitions may be obtained from the Ventura County Elections Division. Only valid signatures from registered voters within the jurisdiction of the office will be used to reduce fees. The number of signatures required to cover the filing fee varies by office and will be verified by the Elections Division. If the full amount of signatures to offset the filing fee are not gathered, that portion of the filing fee not covered by the signatures will need to be paid in full before the candidate can obtain their nomination documents.
This week marked one year since President Biden signed the PACT Act, the largest and most comprehensive expansion of care and benefits for toxic-exposed veterans and their families in more than three decades.
This historic law created presumptions for many respiratory illnesses and cancers, making care and benefits easier and more accessible. The law also streamlined VA’s presumption decision-making process, so that veterans don’t have to wait decades for help that they need today, and the law ensures future generations of veterans are better protected.
VENTURA — The General Services Agency will accept the donation of two bronze veteran memorial statues for installation at the Ventura County Veterans Memorial. Following a vote at the April 25th Board meeting, the Board of Supervisors authorized the General Services Agency to work in partnership with the Vietnam Veterans of Ventura County and other veterans’ organizations to install the statues.
The two statues slated to be installed will honor the loss and sacrifice made by families and members of the military. The “Gold Star” statue will be a life size rendition of a mother/wife kneeling holding her son’s/husband’s folded casket flag. The “Remembering” statue will be a life size rendition of a kneeling soldier reaching out and remembering his fallen brethren.
“It is powerful to be in the presence of monuments in Washington DC like the Vietnams’ Memorial Wall,” said Chair of the Board of Supervisors Matt LaVere. “Now we do not have to travel across the country, we’re going to have something equally powerful right here in Ventura to go pay our respects which is so important.”.

The San Luis Obispo Memorial Day remembrance event was originally offered at the San Luis cemetery in 1885 by the Civil War veterans of the Fred Steele Post 70 of the Grand Army of the Republic. At that time celebrations included a patriotic parade beginning at Higuera and Chorro streets, ending at the San Luis Cemetery.

As you might have heard, we had a major setback with the museum flood disaster in early January. It was quite a shocking start to the new year, to discover standing water across the entire museum and downstairs floors, and widespread water damage in storage closets, the armory, the library, and our museum office.
Despite this bump in the road, we will persevere. I am happy to report we are getting back on track and will be opening by February 15th. Our volunteers have been going above and beyond throughout the month of January and we are indebted to their many hours of extra service and efforts outside their normal volunteer duties. I am proud of and grateful for each of our volunteers who have been helping out to get things cleaned, fixed and ready to open once again (a special thank you to the non-staff folks who graciously joined in to help).

Join the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum (CCVMM) for our next Speaker Series with Historian, Erik Brun, and his presentation on the 54th Coast Artillery on the Central Coast during WWII. Erik Brun, shares the history and accomplishments of the first Central Coast Black Combat unit to be placed into operation against the enemy in WWII. The unit that had gun positions in Morro Bay, Avila and Shell Beach.
In the three months after Pearl Harbor, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked vital merchant shipping and shore facilities along the California coast. The War Department’s Western Defense Command ordered the establishment of firing positions between San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz, to protect the citizens and key defense infrastructure between the Harbor Defenses of Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The 54th Coast Artillery Regiment’s 1st Battalion took up positions between Shell Beach, and Cayucos in April 1942. Erik Brun also discusses how their arrival help shaped Post-war San Luis Obispo.
