Difficult yet vital issues surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion in Ventura County public schools are the focus of the first-ever Ventura County Office of Education Equity Conference to be held on May 24, 2021. This three hour virtual event will feature a wide variety of workshops on ways to increase opportunities and break down barriers for students from marginalized communities.

“We live in an extremely diverse county with schools that serve students from vastly different backgrounds,” said Dr. César Morales, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools. “While our schools are already doing admirable work addressing racial, social and institutional inequities, there is more to be done. That’s why I encourage everyone to join us for the upcoming VCOE Equity Conference,” he said.

Updated every three years, the EOP addresses the County’s planned response to extraordinary emergency situations and natural, human-caused or technological disasters. We believe that emergency preparedness is a shared “whole community” responsibility, involving a broad spectrum of community interests including residents, businesses, faith-based and other community organizations, academia, as well as the media and all levels of government.

Every year, hundreds of school children participate in the Oakland MLK Oratorical Festival, a stirring public speaking competition featuring poetry and speeches inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This uplifting documentary directed by Emmy-winner Amy Schatz and executive produced by Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali follows students from schools across the city as they hone their speeches, hoping for a coveted spot in the finals. The Channel Islands Maritime Museum will be a hub of activity and fun on Father’s Day, June 20, 2021, as it celebrates with “Classics by the Sea.” This family-friendly event will feature a wonderful display of boats, travel trailers, woodies, and classic cars of all vintages, many one-of-a-kind, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  

The Museum will also be hosting a unique maritime treasure sale including used tools, books, ship models, and art. Live music will be provided by local favorite “Unkle Monkey” who will play from 12 pm to 3 pm.  

 Inside of the Museum, there will be knot-tying demonstrations the Museum will also be hosting live characters, in period costumes, from maritime history. The Museum’s current temporary exhibition, Art of the Sailor, will also be available for viewing

Some say it was an inscription on the wall of a cellar in Cologne, Germany, where a number of Jews hid themselves for the entire duration of World War II.

Other accounts say it was scratched on a wall next to the body of a prisoner who had escaped the Warsaw ghetto. Its origins are unclear, but the message was powerful enough to inspire the song, “I Believe.” 

I believe in the sun even when it is not shining; 
I believe in love even when feeling it not; 
I believe in God even when he is silent. 

A choral arrangement of “I Believe” by composer Mark Miller will be among the selections in the CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI) virtual Spring 2021 Choral Program celebrating Black composers like Miller, entitled “Into the Light.”

Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) has adjusted to the new realities that come with COVID-19 by creating their illuminate Speaker Series – a series that started last year which not only addresses aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic but also offers help on how to navigate through this new reality. 

One way the organization has transitioned to serve this past year is by providing helpful resources to our community and beyond as they relate to COVID-19 through this virtual series that features a new world-renowned speaker every month. Past speakers include Roshi Joan Halifax, Frank Ostaseski, Katy Butler, Sharon Salzberg, Dr. BJ Miller, Dr. Sunita Puri and Jenée Johnson. 

Next up on the illuminate Speaker Series line-up is Daniel Goleman, who will present Emotional Intelligence in the Challenging Times of a Pandemic on Wednesday, June 23rd at 6:00 PM PDT. The event is free, but registration is required.

California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO) to present artist talk with car culture creator, Jonathan Michael Castillo from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 24 via Zoom.

Jonathan Michael Castillo’s rearview portraits of unsuspecting drivers is Car Culture, an ongoing photography project that employs state-of-the-art camera and lighting equipment, along with a bit of bravado, to capture real-life moments of LA commuters.

The lighting is cinematic and the color saturated, which makes Castillo’s photos easily pass as stills from a movie. But the unplanned participation of the subject also makes them a type of documentary – both a study and an interpretation of LA and its residents.

On June 29th at 6pm, a virtual community town hall forum will be held where everyone is invited to “attend” (particularly those in SB county), as panelists discuss the anxiety and uncertainty that we are all feeling on some level, as we “re-enter” society including work, school, travel, social/entertainment events, community gatherings and all other forms of in-person living.

The 65th Annual Conejo Valley Days is set for July 14 through July 18 at Conejo Creek Park South (23 Freeway/Janss Rd. exit) in Thousand Oaks.

This year’s event will be streamlined and will feature midway games and carnival rides only—with more than 16 rides from Kastl Amusements for all ages. Traditional fair food and specialty foods will be available at Kastl Amusements food booths. Conejo Valley Days normally runs over four days but is expanding to nine days over two weekends. Entry: $5 per person, free for kids 5 and under. $35 unlimited ride wristbands are available for July 8 only.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum is proud to host its July Speaker Series “Rolling in the Deep Sea: Exploring Coral and Sponge Communities on the West Coast. The guest speaker will be Lizzie Duncan, research ecologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
It’s likely no surprise that corals and sponges are critical foundation species that provide numerous benefits to humans. But, did you know that the majority of coral species live in the frigid deep sea, beyond the reach of light? From 2018 to 2021, the West Coast has been the focus of an incredible field research initiative involving several unprecedented deep-sea expeditions conducted off different ships which deployed a variety of cutting-edge technologies.

The artists will be on hand for an opening reception on Sunday, August 1, 2021, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the reception is $10.00 for SPAM members and $15.00 for non-members. The Moorpark College Theatre Arts Department is excited to offer admission at no cost to its summer production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” The play runs July 22 through Aug. 8 with Thursday through Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. This Tony Award-winning musical is a “Moving Forward Together” event as the college welcomes back students, faculty, staff and the community to the Moorpark College campus.

Unending is a registration of the past broken by the present, allowing for deeper contemplation and immersion to take place. This exhibition showcases the collapse of time, tradition, and production, culminating in something more slowly realized and returned to.

After a several year hiatus and its cancellation in 2020 because of the pandemic, the City of Port Hueneme in partnership with the nonprofit REACH is hosting the Hueneme Beach Festival, Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.

While at the festival, the public can enjoy live music on two stages, fair-style carnival rides and games, local vendor booths and a variety of food and drink. Carnival rides will feature exciting options for all ages, and will stay open late from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night.
