“Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism,” by Safiya Umoja Noble, Ph.D., explains how a combination of private interests in promoting certain sites, along with the monopoly status of a relatively small number of internet search engines, leads to a biased set of search algorithms that discriminate against people of color — specifically women of color, and promote white privilege.

United Way of Ventura County is excited to announce its United to End Homelessness Virtual Symposium on Friday, April 9, at 9 a.m. PST. The symposium will feature Matthew Desmond, author of Pulitzer Prize winning bestseller “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City,” as its keynote speaker. Following Desmond’s address, there will be an opportunity for a Q&A session with the author, which will then lead into a panel discussion with local experts — moderated by Henry Dubroff, editor of the Pacific Coast Business Times — on addressing homelessness.

April 24 — Ventura Land Trust Plants New Oak Grove in Harmon Canyon Preserve

Ventura Land Trust will undertake a major reforestation project at its 2,100-acre Harmon Canyon Preserve with the planting of a new oak grove on Saturday, April 24 from 8:30 am to 12 pm. The 4-acre grove, funded by a grant from SoCalGas, will be planted near the preserve’s trailhead.

The oak grove is the first reforestation project to take place on the preserve, which opened in June 2020. With nine miles of trails for hiking and biking, Harmon Canyon Preserve is Ventura’s first large-scale nature preserve.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Theaster Gates on Thursday, April 29 at 5 p.m. Pacific. An artist, social innovator, musician and cultural planner, Theaster Gates creates works that engage with space theory and land development, sculpture and performance. Drawing on his interest and training in urban planning and preservation, he redeems spaces that have been left behind, upturning art values, land values and human values. Gates is a professor at the University of Chicago and founder and president of Rebuild Foundation, which restores the cultural foundations of underinvested neighborhoods and incites movements of community revitalization. The winner of Artes Mundi 6, Gates is also a recipient of the Nasher Prize for Sculpture, the Urban Land Institute Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development and France’s Légion d’Honneur, and was recently named co-chair of fashion label Prada’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council.

One of the nation’s visionary legal thinkers and social justice advocates, Stevenson has spent nearly four decades seeking to eradicate racial discrimination in the criminal justice system. A MacArthur Fellow, he is an attorney, human rights activist and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. He spearheaded Alabama’s Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the first national memorial to victims of white supremacy, which opened in 2018. Stevenson is the subject of HBO’s 2019 documentary True Justice and his bestselling memoir Just Mercy was adapted into an acclaimed feature film of the same name.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents classical music treasures Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott performing Songs of Comfort and Hope on Wednesday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific. Over their 35-year musical relationship, beloved cellist Yo-Yo Ma and acclaimed pianist Kathryn Stott have “developed a wonderfully warm and mutually responsive musical partnership that has blossomed in performances that are both generous and incisive” (NPR). Their recent collaborative album Songs of Comfort and Hope was conceived in April 2020 when people everywhere were entering a dramatic new world. Ranging from fresh arrangements of traditional folk tunes, pop songs and jazz standards to mainstays from the western classical repertoire, the album encourages a sense of community, identity and purpose, crossing boundaries and binding us together in thanks, consolation and encouragement. Performing songs from the album selected specifically for this event, Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott hope that the familiarity and reinvention contained in this music offers everyone some comfort and hope.

With each of her performances, the Philadelphia-born contralto Marian Anderson (1897–1993) tested limits and broke boundaries. She is best remembered for her gripping recital on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday in April 1939, when some 75,000 people gathered to witness her sing. On account of her race, Anderson had been prohibited from performing at the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Constitution Hall and other venues in Washington, D.C. The concert on the National Mall, therefore, became a watershed moment in the struggle against segregationist policies and discrimination.

Beginning May 13, 2021, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) will be presenting its latest exhibition “Art of the Sailor” in its Brenda and Gary Farr Gallery.

When sailors left their homes to voyage across the sea, oftentimes they faced dangerous and extreme working conditions, horribly cramped quarters, and a journey that could stretch months to years. When stuck in these difficult and wearisome circumstances, some sailors used art to express themselves. “Art of the Sailor” will feature a unique collection of scrimshaw pieces (many of which have never been shown before at the Museum), decorative and working marine knots, unique embroidered items, and other sailor-made artifacts. Several of the items to be featured in the exhibition have never been seen outside of their privately-owned collections.

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum will be a hub of activity and fun on Father’s Day, June 20, 2021, as it celebrates with “Classics by the Sea.” This family-friendly event will feature a wonderful display of boats, travel trailers, woodies, and classic cars of all vintages, many one-of-a-kind, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Museum will also be hosting a unique maritime treasure sale including used tools, books, ship models, and art. Live music will be provided by local favorite “Unkle Monkey” who will play from 12 pm to 3 pm.

Inside of the Museum, there will be knot-tying demonstrations the Museum will also be hosting live characters, in period costumes, from maritime history. The Museum’s current temporary exhibition, Art of the Sailor, will also be available for viewing

Some say it was an inscription on the wall of a cellar in Cologne, Germany, where a number of Jews hid themselves for the entire duration of World War II.

Other accounts say it was scratched on a wall next to the body of a prisoner who had escaped the Warsaw ghetto. Its origins are unclear, but the message was powerful enough to inspire the song, “I Believe.”

I believe in God even when he is silent.

A choral arrangement of “I Believe” by composer Mark Miller will be among the selections in the CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI) virtual Spring 2021 Choral Program celebrating Black composers like Miller, entitled “Into the Light.”

California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO) to present artist talk with car culture creator, Jonathan Michael Castillo from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 24 via Zoom.

Jonathan Michael Castillo’s rearview portraits of unsuspecting drivers is Car Culture, an ongoing photography project that employs state-of-the-art camera and lighting equipment, along with a bit of bravado, to capture real-life moments of LA commuters.

The lighting is cinematic and the color saturated, which makes Castillo’s photos easily pass as stills from a movie. But the unplanned participation of the subject also makes them a type of documentary – both a study and an interpretation of LA and its residents.

The 65th Annual Conejo Valley Days is set for July 14 through July 18 at Conejo Creek Park South (23 Freeway/Janss Rd. exit) in Thousand Oaks.

This year’s event will be streamlined and will feature midway games and carnival rides only—with more than 16 rides from Kastl Amusements for all ages. Traditional fair food and specialty foods will be available at Kastl Amusements food booths. Conejo Valley Days normally runs over four days but is expanding to nine days over two weekends. Entry: $5 per person, free for kids 5 and under. $35 unlimited ride wristbands are available for July 8 only.

Core Ensemble’s mesmerizing Tres Vidas is a musical theatre work celebrating the life and work of three pioneering Latin American women – Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran peasant activist Rufina Amaya and Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni.

Written by Chilean poet Marjorie Agosin, Tres Vidas offers powerful portrayals of each woman and includes the singing of traditional Mexican folk songs as well as Argentinean popular and tango songs made famous by Mercedes Sosa and Carlos Gardel. Additional music by Astor Piazzolla, Orlando Garcia, Pablo Ortiz, Alice Gomez, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Michael DeMurga and Osvaldo Golijov round out the musical score.

The NASA/USGS Landsat 9 satellite scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base on September 16 has been pushed back to September 23 because of transportation issues involving liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is needed to support launch site activities.

For nearly five decades, the Landsat mission has provided the longest continuous record of Earth’s land surfaces from space, and this data archive informs and influences not just the U.S., but countries across the world. Information gathered by Landsat helps world leaders and policymakers gain a deeper understanding of environmental change, respond to natural disasters, and even forecast future crop production.

To commemorate Landsat and its importance to our understanding of Earth, Explore Lompoc, NASA, and USGS are hosting many “Launch Week” events in the city of Lompoc during the days before and after the launch. Here are the activities with the rescheduled times.

Ventura County Behavioral Health (VCBH), a part of the Ventura County Health Care Agency, will be hosting their 6th Annual Suicide Prevention Forum as a virtual event on September 23, 2021, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

This year’s conference, entitled “Conversations About Suicide, Help & Hope”, will feature four different speakers who will share their inspirational stories of overcoming trauma and creating meaning in their lives. During the second part of the forum, participants will be able to choose one of the four speakers to join for a breakout session, where additional information will be provided, along with time for questions.

The BBQ will be Saturday, September 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Yarrow Family YMCA (31105 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Westlake Village). The event is free and open to the community.

YMCA Adventure Guides is for fathers and their children. It is designed to strengthen and build a lifelong relationship between parent and child through outdoor adventure activities, camping trips and monthly events. The Social Justice Fund for Ventura County (SJFVC) would like to invite you to an opening of an exhibition and performance organized by our Fellow, Elibet Valencia Munoz.

Elibet was awarded a fellowship grant to make a photo documentary on the elegant Oaxacan dance called “La Danza de los Diablos”. This dance includes the wearing of horned, devilesque masks.

The goal of Elibet’s project is to bring awareness to the diversity of culture and heritage within Ventura County and to advocate for more just representations and services for the Mixtec and afro-indigenous community.

Trees work for us by cleaning air and water, sequestering atmospheric carbon, buffering climate extremes, and reducing energy usage. Oaks reduce flooding and support our native wildlife. Triunfo Water & Sanitation District is sponsoring a free, hands-on workshop on drip irrigation Saturday, October 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Mae Boyar Park (130 Kanan Road in Oak Park). The class is free and open to the public, although priority registration will be given to customers of Triunfo Water & Sanitation District.

Workshop instructors are from the University of California Master Gardeners of Ventura County. Participants will learn the benefits of drip irrigation, review the required components, and assemble a drip system that they can recreate in their own landscape. MCASB is pleased to present a culminating exhibition of the Light Elephant on view from September 23 – October 3, 2021. The Light Elephant is a “site reflective” inflatable public art program composed of a series of temporary installations within Downtown Santa Barbara in coordination with a sustained social media campaign.

Throughout the Summer of 2021, UCSB Professors and Artists Iman Djouini & Jonathan Taube directed a team of students to install this large-scale public artwork in dozens of sites in Downtown Santa Barbara. Through its installation and workshops, this project attempts to memorialize the stories of Downtown Santa Barbara art and culture from a decolonial perspective, as we start to turn the corner and re-engage with our public space.

Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Ted Nash will lead a group of Santa Barbara City College musicians in a concert of original music on the front terrace of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Oct. 9 at 2:30 p.m. The pieces are all inspired by or are musical interpretations of works of art from the museum’s collection.

The concert, “Ted Nash: The Sound of Art,” will share the creative accomplishments made by the SBCC New World Jazz Ensemble during a workshop held in September. As part of his two-week stay as a Santa Barbara Museum of Art Artist in Residence, Nash led the group through a unique composition process using works of art as inspirations for new musical compositions.

Oct. 9 — Neon Night Art Show and Sale Combines Artistic Styles of Chris Gocong and Rod Lathim

Neon Night Art Show and Sale is a new art collaboration featuring the artistic styles of Santa Barbara locals Chris Gocong and Rod Lathim. This collaboration combines Gocong and Lathim’s use of neon, light and matter to create nontraditional art pieces. This will be the first of a series of collaborations between two artists in Santa Barbara.

Chris Gocong is a visual artist with a passion for capturing emotion through portraiture, figurative art and abstraction. His work is mainly inspired by the commonality of human emotion and consciousness.

He came to find art as a creative outlet and meditative practice after retiring from a career in the NFL.
