Channel Islands Maritime Museum Hosts Mini “Eco-Boat” Contest for the Month of April

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) is happy to announce its April event/contest as part of its continuing 30th anniversary year celebration and Earth Day.

The Museum is calling for mini “eco-boat” contest entries which are boats that utilize recyclable or compostable materials. Entries should be no larger than 24” in length. Winning entries will be chosen based on the most creative use of materials. Wood, paper, glass, aluminum, cardboard, and plant fibers (including cotton fabric, canvas, hemp, non-nylon rope, etc.) are all acceptable materials. Plastics and foams may not be used in the construction of boats. Prizes will be awarded in four age categories: Adults (18 years and older), Young Adults (13-17 years of age), Kids (7-12 years of age), and Kids (6 years and under).

The Smith-Hobson Family Collections Manager Renee Tallent took us back a full century to talk about the 1920s hairstyle technique “Marcelling.” Renee explored the different variations of curling irons available on the market sold to achieve the perfect natural wave.

Santa Paula Art Museum Announces Summer/Fall Exhibition Lineup

With eyes toward reopening in the coming weeks, the Santa Paula Art Museum has four stellar exhibitions lined up for the summer and fall months, which will showcase artists and locales that stretch the length of the California coast. All of the exhibits will be available to view online at www.santapaulaartmuseum.org during their respective run dates, as well as open to the public when allowed by local public health directives.

“Erin Hanson: Colors of California” will mark Hanson’s most comprehensive collection of California’s multitudinous landscapes. Combining the emotional resonance of the 19th century Impressionists with the lavish color palette of Expressionism, Erin Hanson’s unique style of oil painting has come to be known as “Open Impressionism.” Hanson’s exhibit at the Santa Paula Art Museum will include an expansive collection of landscapes inspired by Ventura County, Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, Monterey County, Mendocino, and other scenic locales. Island Packer Cruises, established in 1968, has recently begun to operate daily scheduled trips for day visitors and campers from Ventura Harbor Village to Scorpion Anchorage in Channel Islands National Park – The Galapagos of North America.

Power’s exhibit is over two years in the making, and is a love letter to living even in the midst of great change and challenges.

The California Strawberry Festival, which had been set for May 15 and 16 at Strawberry Meadows of College Park in Oxnard, is officially cancelled and will not be rescheduled for 2021 because of the continuing public health crisis due to COVID-19.

“We know that this will come as an enormous disappointment, not only to the thousands of guests we welcome every year, but also to the sponsors, exhibitors, performers, vendors and volunteers who help make the Festival what it is,” says Dean Kato, Chairman of the California Strawberry Festival.

As part of OPAC’s first Artist-in-Residency, Oxnard filmmaker Arcelia Martinez is raising awareness about mental health in the Latino community through a year-long programming series (June 2020 – May 2021) and the production of a short documentary. The next event is a Salon focused on Mental Health Stress Factors and will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 2 pm via Zoom. It’s free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. The event will be professionally translated by Bridging Voices-Uniendo Voces.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Grammy-winning Mandolin Virtuoso Chris Thile on Tues., March 9 at 5 p.m. Pacific. MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist with a broad outlook that encompasses classical, rock, jazz, bluegrass and just about everything else. The SoCal native is a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek and hosted the acclaimed radio program Live From Here. Through his wide-ranging output and collaborations with the who’s who of musicians, Thile is creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic. As a soloist, Thile has released several albums including Thanks for Listening, a “modern masterpiece” (PopMatters). Recent collaborations include Not Our First Goat Rodeo (2020) with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan and Edgar Meyer, the highly-anticipated follow-up to their Grammy-winning project The Goat Rodeo Sessions with Edgar Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma.

A two-star Michelin chef with an award-winning group of restaurants, several cookbooks and whose Spanish-inspired food popularized tapas-style small plates in the U.S., José Andrés is not resting on his laurels. Inventing Life is a doc/film about Tell Tale, a theatre-dance piece that engages the authors and their two children. A piece of life on stage, that should have opened in California and Oregon in April 2020, remaining on the verge of our common uncertain future. An engaging, poetic work about the unfinished: a search to elevate the present to a mutual encounter between distant human beings.
The documentary has been filmed in theaters, locations in wild nature and in abandoned spaces: a theater company working in the absence of live performing. A proof of necessity. A dialogue with nature and with a theatre crowded by absents.

Charleston’s Ranky Tanky exploded onto the music scene with their inspired take on the soulful songs of South Carolina’s Gullah culture, taking home the 2020 Grammy win for Best Regional Roots Music Album. With a name that translates loosely as “Get Funky,” Ranky Tanky is a relentlessly upbeat ambassador of Gullah, a culture known for retaining more African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other African-American community in the United States. Preserving and paying homage to a vanishing way of life, the dynamo quintet introduces audiences to the language, rhythm and music of the region with a distinctly American sound that incorporates jazz, blues, gospel and R&B.

The Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC) invites you to an evening under the stars, celebrating National Poetry Month (April). The event is free and open to the public for ages 13 years and up. Join us on Sunday, April 18 from 6 PM to 8 PM for an Open Mic Night showcasing our talented community.

OPAC is pleased to announce that Ventura County’s 2021 Youth Poet Laureate, Angelina Leanos, will be taking the stage alongside Genesis Perez, the 2020 Youth Poet Laureate. The event is to be hosted by musician and all-around-funny-guy, Christopher Hall. UCSB Arts & Lectures presents urban dance innovators Ephrat Asherie Dance in Odeon on Tuesday, April 20 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific. Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie has shown off her formidable street dance chops as a favorite member of Dorrance Dance. A New York-based b-girl with extensive training in ballet and modern dance, the Israel native returns with her own company, revealing and exploring the complexities of street and social dance forms. Odeon, a new work for seven dancers and four musicians, brings together and remixes street and club dances including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue, set to a mix of early 20th century romantic music and popular Afro-Brazilian rhythms.

Community Environmental Council Announces #CelebrateClimateLeadership Virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival

The Community Environmental Council (CEC) is hosting #CelebrateClimateLeadership, a virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival dedicated to inspiration, community building, and climate action. The FREE livestream event begins on Thursday, April 22 and runs until Saturday, April 24. It will be available to view at SBEarthDay.org.

The virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival – which will be fully online again this year due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions – will feature three days of conversations with climate leaders, musical performances, art contests, inspirational speakers, and opportunities for individuals to learn how they can lean into action at this urgent moment.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Theaster Gates on Thursday, April 29 at 5 p.m. Pacific. An artist, social innovator, musician and cultural planner, Theaster Gates creates works that engage with space theory and land development, sculpture and performance. Drawing on his interest and training in urban planning and preservation, he redeems spaces that have been left behind, upturning art values, land values and human values. Gates is a professor at the University of Chicago and founder and president of Rebuild Foundation, which restores the cultural foundations of underinvested neighborhoods and incites movements of community revitalization. The winner of Artes Mundi 6, Gates is also a recipient of the Nasher Prize for Sculpture, the Urban Land Institute Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development and France’s Légion d’Honneur, and was recently named co-chair of fashion label Prada’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents classical music treasures Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott performing Songs of Comfort and Hope on Wednesday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific. Over their 35-year musical relationship, beloved cellist Yo-Yo Ma and acclaimed pianist Kathryn Stott have “developed a wonderfully warm and mutually responsive musical partnership that has blossomed in performances that are both generous and incisive” (NPR). Their recent collaborative album Songs of Comfort and Hope was conceived in April 2020 when people everywhere were entering a dramatic new world. Ranging from fresh arrangements of traditional folk tunes, pop songs and jazz standards to mainstays from the western classical repertoire, the album encourages a sense of community, identity and purpose, crossing boundaries and binding us together in thanks, consolation and encouragement. Performing songs from the album selected specifically for this event, Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott hope that the familiarity and reinvention contained in this music offers everyone some comfort and hope.
