Sept. 18 — 4th Annual Southeast Ventura County YMCA Gala canceled due to rising COVID-19 numbers

WESTLAKE VILLAGE — Citing the growing number of COVID-19 infections throughout the area, the Southeast Ventura County YMCA has decided to cancel its 4th Annual Gala that was set for Saturday, September 18 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village.

“After careful consideration of the rising uncertainty of the pandemic, our board and staff have decided to cancel our gala for 2021,” says Ronnie Stone, President/CEO of the Southeast Ventura County YMCA. “We look forward to hosting an in-person event in September of 2022.”

Despite canceling the event, the Y’s mission continues. The Y encourages the community to continue supporting the Y. Every dollar raised provides vital funding to individuals and families in need. To donate, please visit www.sevymca.org/mission.

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building positive relationships, impacting lives and strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living programs and social responsibility. Sept. 21 — Livingston’s Grief and Bereavement Program offers free skills training class

Livingston’s Grief and Bereavement Program is offering a free Bereavement Skills Training Class. The class will provide the participant with information on grief and loss, dispel myths and misconceptions about grief and teach the key components of companioning someone grieving the death of a loved one. On Wednesday, September 22nd at 6 p.m., Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) will hold its 9th Annual Heroes of Hospice (HOH) to honor local community heroes with Keynote Speaker and #1 New York Times bestselling author, Elizabeth Gilbert. The program will include honorees, an online auction, and more.

***After consultation with local infectious disease experts, Hospice of Santa Barbara has made the decision to transition Heroes of Hospice of Santa Barbara to a completely virtual event this year. The health and wellness of those in the community are their top priority.

Throughout this difficult time in our community, the demand for HSB’s services has been growing. Fundraisers like Heroes of Hospice allows the organization to reach our community members struggling with grief or life-threatening illness, free of charge.

The program is intended to facilitate collaboration between industry, academia and government research and development organizations, providing a forum in which the naval community can evaluate the utility of new technologies before decisions are made on investment priorities.

Core Ensemble’s mesmerizing Tres Vidas is a musical theatre work celebrating the life and work of three pioneering Latin American women – Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran peasant activist Rufina Amaya and Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni.

Written by Chilean poet Marjorie Agosin, Tres Vidas offers powerful portrayals of each woman and includes the singing of traditional Mexican folk songs as well as Argentinean popular and tango songs made famous by Mercedes Sosa and Carlos Gardel. Additional music by Astor Piazzolla, Orlando Garcia, Pablo Ortiz, Alice Gomez, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Michael DeMurga and Osvaldo Golijov round out the musical score.

Sept. 23 — Explore Lompoc Partners with NASA and USGS to Celebrate 50 Years of Landsat Ahead of September’s Landsat 9 Launch

The NASA/USGS Landsat 9 satellite scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base on September 16 has been pushed back to September 23 because of transportation issues involving liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is needed to support launch site activities.

For nearly five decades, the Landsat mission has provided the longest continuous record of Earth’s land surfaces from space, and this data archive informs and influences not just the U.S., but countries across the world. Information gathered by Landsat helps world leaders and policymakers gain a deeper understanding of environmental change, respond to natural disasters, and even forecast future crop production.

To commemorate Landsat and its importance to our understanding of Earth, Explore Lompoc, NASA, and USGS are hosting many “Launch Week” events in the city of Lompoc during the days before and after the launch. Here are the activities with the rescheduled times.

Ventura County Behavioral Health (VCBH), a part of the Ventura County Health Care Agency, will be hosting their 6th Annual Suicide Prevention Forum as a virtual event on September 23, 2021, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

This year’s conference, entitled “Conversations About Suicide, Help & Hope”, will feature four different speakers who will share their inspirational stories of overcoming trauma and creating meaning in their lives. During the second part of the forum, participants will be able to choose one of the four speakers to join for a breakout session, where additional information will be provided, along with time for questions.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria will host its annual fundraiser gala, Pacific Dutch Group Presents: An Evening in Bloom, A Roaring 20’s Affair, honoring Diana and Clyde Freeman on Saturday, September 25 at 5:00pm. The fundraiser gala will take place outdoors in the courtyard of the Girls Inc. campus at 5315 Foothill Road in Carpinteria.

Featuring an elegant roaring 20’s theme, this year’s event will honor Diana and Clyde Freeman for their commitment and service to the Carpinteria community, including over one decade of service to Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. The fundraiser will also commemorate the organization’s 50th anniversary.

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA is holding a Welcome BBQ for parents and their children interested in taking part in YMCA Adventure Guides. The BBQ will be Saturday, September 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Yarrow Family YMCA (31105 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Westlake Village). The event is free and open to the community.

YMCA Adventure Guides is for fathers and their children. It is designed to strengthen and build a lifelong relationship between parent and child through outdoor adventure activities, camping trips and monthly events. Parent-child pairs join a “Circle” with families in their neighborhood or school. Campout locations include El Capitan, Catalina, Kern River and Big Bear.

The Social Justice Fund for Ventura County (SJFVC) would like to invite you to an opening of an exhibition and performance organized by our Fellow, Elibet Valencia Munoz.

Elibet was awarded a fellowship grant to make a photo documentary on the elegant Oaxacan dance called “La Danza de los Diablos”. This dance includes the wearing of horned, devilesque masks.

The goal of Elibet’s project is to bring awareness to the diversity of culture and heritage within Ventura County and to advocate for more just representations and services for the Mixtec and afro-indigenous community.

Through the month of October, Ventura Land Trust will celebrate its first annual OAKtober with a series of events that acknowledge and celebrate Ventura County’s oak trees and ecosystems.

Oaks are the foundation of several major ecosystems in Ventura County. Each oak is central to home to a hundred interdependent plant and animal species. Trees work for us by cleaning air and water, sequestering atmospheric carbon, buffering climate extremes, and reducing energy usage. Oaks reduce flooding and support our native wildlife. Oaks, and trees in general, provide important benefits that provide the foundation for our individual and planetary health.

Triunfo Water & Sanitation District is sponsoring a free, hands-on workshop on drip irrigation Saturday, October 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Mae Boyar Park (130 Kanan Road in Oak Park). The class is free and open to the public, although priority registration will be given to customers of Triunfo Water & Sanitation District.

Workshop instructors are from the University of California Master Gardeners of Ventura County. Participants will learn the benefits of drip irrigation, review the required components, and assemble a drip system that they can recreate in their own landscape. Everyone will take home a detailed guidebook as well.

MCASB is pleased to present a culminating exhibition of the Light Elephant on view from September 23 – October 3, 2021. The Light Elephant is a “site reflective” inflatable public art program composed of a series of temporary installations within Downtown Santa Barbara in coordination with a sustained social media campaign.

Throughout the Summer of 2021, UCSB Professors and Artists Iman Djouini & Jonathan Taube directed a team of students to install this large-scale public artwork in dozens of sites in Downtown Santa Barbara. Through its installation and workshops, this project attempts to memorialize the stories of Downtown Santa Barbara art and culture from a decolonial perspective, as we start to turn the corner and re-engage with our public space.

Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Ted Nash will lead a group of Santa Barbara City College musicians in a concert of original music on the front terrace of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Oct. 9 at 2:30 p.m. The pieces are all inspired by or are musical interpretations of works of art from the museum’s collection.

The concert, “Ted Nash: The Sound of Art,” will share the creative accomplishments made by the SBCC New World Jazz Ensemble during a workshop held in September. As part of his two-week stay as a Santa Barbara Museum of Art Artist in Residence, Nash led the group through a unique composition process using works of art as inspirations for new musical compositions.

The Moorpark College Theatre Arts Department is proud to present live theatre with “Nell Gwynn,” a comedy that chronicles the true story of the play’s namesake, a prostitute turned orange-seller who becomes the mistress of King Charles II in 17th century London. The play runs Oct. 7 – 17, with matinee, evening and live streaming performances.

After much discussion and adhering to COVID-19 safety guidelines, the department received approval to perform the play in a parking garage on the Moorpark College campus, creating an indoor-outdoor theatre.

“This decision to perform in a parking garage was not easy, and it has presented many challenges. But with those challenges have come unexpected triumphs,” said Suzanne Fagan, who teaches in Moorpark College’s Theatre Arts Department and directs the show. “Though we are not performing it in a traditional theatre, the play,

Workshops are scheduled for Oct. 23, and will be in-person or by Zoom, depending on the campus (details below). Students can drop in anytime during the workshops and attend any campus workshop.

Bilingual financial aid staff will assist students in completing applications for the 2022-2023 school-year FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). The workshops are free and open to the community; people may attend a workshop on either date and at any campus. Advance registration is preferred.

The Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College is pleased to present “Planet Earth,” a group exhibition by three artists — Sarah Rosalena Brady, Mark Churchill and Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales — who integrate different concepts of land in their work. The word “land” can have many implications. As a noun, it can refer to territory, soil, rural areas, real estate, as well as nations, provinces and kingdoms. As a verb, it can mean to alight, dock, moor or touch down as well as to bring on, settle, acquire or inflict. Of course, the antonym of land is sea, and the title of the show is inspired by our planet’s serendipitous combination of both these elements along with atmosphere, air and sky. As we desperately search and yearn for solutions to the ongoing climate crisis, the fear and uncertainty created leads us to look both inward and outward for answers. And as we look to other places within our current reach such as the moon or Mars for resolutions it is important to remember and embrace the absolute habitat we already have at hand as a lesson to our past and inevitable futures. All three artists in Planet Earth explore these themes in their work in unique and compelling ways.

Oct. 30-31 — ‘Boo at the Zoo’ Offers No Tricks, Just Treats

America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College turns wildly spooktacular on Oct. 30 and 31 for “Boo at the Zoo,” the annual Halloween-themed event that features animal shows, costume parades, prizes and treats for kids.

For the family-fun event, the Zoo will be draped in decorations, and people of all ages can closely view the more than 100 animals cared for at the Zoo. Each child wearing a costume will receive a zoo-themed bingo card upon entry. Each square of the card represents a trick-or-treat station where the child can receive candy or a treat.

“Our guests look forward to our family-friendly Halloween event each year, and we have the best one around!” said Zoo Operations Assistant Kris Romero. “We have more and more local families discovering this gem of a Zoo in their own backyard, and we have new animals and new animal habitats for the community to discover.”

During this intimate reading and book signing, author Mary Tonetti Dorra shares her personal experience and gives a reading from her upcoming book Two Lives on Four Continents: A Double Memoir. This work tells the story of how Mary and her husband Henri Dorra, two people from different worlds, found each other and created a unified life. Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session education program for family members of adults living with a mental health disorder and is designed to help family members understand and support their loved one while maintaining their own well-being. The program will be held from on Wednesdays through Nov. 10.

The class will cover information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other mental health conditions and is taught by trained teachers who are also family members that know what it is like to have a loved one struggling with a mental health disorder.

The fall concert features 12 pieces that reflect the choreographers’ interpretations of ever-evolving social dynamics and relationships while intimately reflecting on our human experience.
