The Santa Barbara Museum of Art will present art historian and critic Suzanne Hudson explores Abstraction after Psychology from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 at 1130 State St., Santa Barbara.

Suzanne Hudson discusses mid-century abstraction in relation to psychology and projective testing and examines the ways that the use of images in clinical settings conditioned audience encounters with art.

Aug. 20 — Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) will be hosting two new volunteer orientations in August

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM) will be hosting a new volunteer orientation in August. Orientations will take place at the museum at 3900 Bluefin Circle in Oxnard on Saturday, August 20, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm.

These orientations will share the history of the Museum, its collections, and the many ways in which volunteers can help to support the Maritime Museum. CIMM has volunteer opportunities in several areas including Museum tours, education, events, the CIMM Building Brigade, and visitor services.

The Museum asks for attendees to please RSVP to office@cimmvc.org or call CIMM at 805.984.6260 if they would like to attend either orientation.

Ventura Land Trust’s annual benefit, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, returns for its 13th year on Saturday, August 20th at Ventura County Credit Union headquarters. This signature event raises funds each year to support Ventura Land Trust’s mission to permanently protect the land, water, wildlife and scenic beauty of the Ventura region for current and future generations. Film Festival doors open at 5:00 pm, and films begin around 7:45 pm. A virtual ticket option is available for guests who prefer to enjoy the Film Festival from home.

Over the past two weeks, artist Maria Arroyo and her supporting team from Slingshot / Alpha Art Studio have been busy at work completing her mural Nature Dream Windows. Selected by project partners Community Environmental Council (CEC), MCASB, and Paseo Nuevo from submissions from across Ventura, Santa Barbara, and SLO counties, Arroyo’s mural illustrates what Earth Day and Climate Leadership mean to her.

Nature Dream Windows will be revealed on Paseo Nuevo’s Instagram Live at 1:45 pm PST on Saturday, April 23, 2022, during Community Environmental Council’s Earth Day Celebration at the Arlington Theater.

UCSB Arts & Lectures (A&L) is thrilled to announce the return of their annual free summer cinema series to its original home in the Sunken Garden of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. The 2022 theme, Hot Fun in the Summertime, means that there will be something exciting for everyone. Bring breathable blankets, low chairs, a picnic and your friends!

UCSB students can see the films on Wednesday evenings at Campbell Hall. These screenings are co-presented with UCSB Summer Sessions. Students must present a valid current UCSB ID for admission.

“After a challenging three years I can say with confidence and unfettered joy that the SUMMER FILMS ARE BACK at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse,” says A&L Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta M. The Museum of Ventura County to present Going Wild Opening Reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at 100 E. Main St., Ventura.

For novelist Melina Sempill Watts and artist Jeff Sojka, falling in love with a landscape means interconnecting the lives of the plants and animals that make it alive. Watts’ first novel Tree is an exploration of 229 years in the life of a California live oak from the point of view of … the tree. Sojka dove into the book and painted his vision of the tree’s reality, each painting honoring the aliveness and richness of California’s landscapes. This multimedia experiment, with the exhibit being available both on-site and virtually, will offer the audience the opportunity to expand their imagination, stepping into the life of a tree from multiple vantage points. Consider the world from the plants’ perspective: begin going wild.

Washington DC’s legendary DJ duo, Shaolin Jazz, are making their West Coast debut this summer as part of their “Can I Kick It?” series, which scores live hip hop, soul, and funk music to cult classic kung fu films. The Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC) is proud to bring “Can I Kick It?” to Ventura County audiences as part of an end-of-summer celebration.

he City of Port Hueneme in partnership with the nonprofit REACH is hosting the Hueneme Beach Festival, Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The admission is free.

The festival features live music on two stages, fair-style carnival rides and games, local vendor booths, arts and crafts, and a variety of food and drink. Carnival rides will feature kiddie, family and teen/adult options.

Live entertainment on the Main Stage includes guitarist and singer Taylor Sackson; Fleetwood Mac cover band Twisted Gypsy; classic and fresh New Orleans sounds from New Orleans Suspects; post-third wave ska band Beebs and Her Money Makers, two-time Grammy award winner The Phantom Blues Band and soul and funk The Nth Power. The Toni Young Community Stage will feature a wide variety of performances by local bands from throughout Ventura County.

Los Mixos, one of Oxnard’s newest music bands, in collaboration with Red Sky Productions and HOPE Social Skills for Teens with Autism, will be performing live for a multi-camera, internet-streamed studio concert called Downtown Window (DTW), to promote their original 5-song music EP. The concert will be performed and streamed on the internet at www.DowntownWindow.com on Saturday, August 27th at 4pm at the Red Sky Productions studio in downtown Oxnard. Through the livestream, fans will see and hear Los Mixos’ newly released songs filmed in a music video type set with lighting, set design and props with the help of a crew of camera operators, sound engineers, a cinematographer and television director.

Art historian Alexander Alberro explores the development of a research-based artistic practice that fused abstract art with mathematics, science, and technology in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Alberro addresses how and why these experiments evolved into a greater concern with the participation of art spectators.

Antonio Rey, one of today’s most important and popular multi-award winning Spanish flamenco guitarists and composers – a true master of the instrument – will be making his Santa Barbara debut, promising an incredibly exciting and moving performance on Sunday, September 11 at the New Vic Theatre in Santa Barbara at 7:00 p.m.

Rey’s 2020 “Flamenco sin Fronteras” album was awarded the Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album. He has composed for and played alongside artists such as Antonio Canales, the Japanese dancer Yoko Komatsubara, Rafael Amargo, Richard Bona, and Farruquito. He has also worked and toured with the Maestro Paco de Lucía.

Rey Rey is a winner of several national and international flamenco guitar competitions and after such an impressive career accompanying some of the most important figures in flamenco – both singers and dancers – it’s time for Antonio’s guitar to take center stage. Performing with Rey in Santa Barbara is guitarist Jose Tanaka, Diego Alvarez on percussion, along with dancer Maria Bermudez.

Too often we hear that something is lost in translation, but who talks about what can be gained in the process, especially in relation to poetry? In an age of dwindling linguistic diversity and cultural homogenization, poetry translators build bridges across borders and between cultures, writers, and readers, introducing new syntactical strategies, rhythms, and image repertoires. Reading as translators is the deepest reading, a multi-layered engagement with sensorial experience—verbal and visual choices interwoven with the vibrancy of sound—at its core.

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is pleased to welcome author Corinne Heyning Laverty to its next Speaker Series event on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. She will be speaking on her remarkable book North America’s Galapagos: The Historic Channel Islands Biological Survey.

This book recounts the story of a group of researcher04s, naturalists, adventurers, cooks, immigrants, and scientifically curious teenagers who came together in the late 1930s to embark upon a series of ambitious expeditions never before, or since, attempted. Their mission: to piece together the broken shards of the Channel Islands’ history and evolution. California’s eight Channel Islands, sometimes called “North America’s Galapagos,” each support unique ecosystems with varied flora and fauna and differing human histories. This untold saga of adventure, discovery, and goals abandoned is juxtaposed against the fresh successes of a new generation of Channel Island scholars.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art to present “Going Global: Abstract Art at Mid-Century” through Sept. 25.

Like the US dollar, air travel, and space satellites, abstract art encircled the globe or at least the capitalist West during the middle of the 20th century.

This exhibition shows just how far abstraction reached and some of the forms it took during the Cold War, when glossy color magazines and proliferating fairs brought a globalized art world into being. Going Global has artists born in Argentina, Colombia, Germany, France, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Nearly all the works come from the Museum’s permanent collection.

Artists in the exhibition include Yaacov Agam, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Eduardo MacEntyre, Ernst Nay, Kenzo Okada, Jesús Rafael Soto, Pierre Soulages, Fernando de Szyszlo Valdelomar, Bridget Riley, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, and Kansuke Yamamoto.

After two years of preparation, The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is proud to present its first exhibition focused on climate change titled Fire and Ice: Our Changing Landscape through Sept. 26.

Curated by executive director Stacey Otte-Demangate, the immersive exhibition features ten artists depicting the opposing forces of fire and ice across a range of media, including video installations, acrylic paintings, photography, mixed media, fabric panels, an ice drill, and more. Two artists implemented the use of natural materials in their works. Xavier Cortada of Miami, Florida incorporated glacial ice and Arctic dirt into abstract paintings, and Seattle, Washington-based artist Amiko Matsuo utilized ash and Phos-Chek fire retardant used in firefighting efforts for her large-scale abstract artworks.

The first CSUCI HeaLS: Healthcare Leadership Symposium Series event, “Current and Future Challenges in Healthcare,” will be held at CSUCI’s main campus on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. in the John Spoor Broome Library, Room 1320. The event is open to the public and features four panelists who each bring a unique perspective from the role they serve in healthcare.

UCSB Arts & Lectures (A&L) presents a free screening of Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton at the Arlington Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Perhaps the greatest big wave surfer of all time, Laird Hamilton is a living legend who has tamed some of the world’s mightiest waves. Amongst the surf community, he is also one of the most controversial figures, an innovator who has revolutionized the sport often to the dismay of purists. This thrilling, up-close portrait traces Hamilton’s remarkable journey, from his rebellious childhood in Hawaii to his fearless first forays into surfing to his relentless pursuit of ever-bigger waves, a quest that ultimately led him to conquer what’s been called “the heaviest wave ever ridden.” Blending candid interviews with breathtaking action footage, Take Every Wave is a visceral, white-knuckle look at a life lived on the edge. Sept. 30 — Flying Goat Cellars Hosts Annual Winemaker Dinner at La Purisima Mission

Flying Goat Cellars will host its fifteenth annual Winemaker Dinner at La Purísima Mission on September 30, 2022. Winemaker Norm Yost partners with Chef Clark Staub of Full of Life Flatbread for an intimate dining experience in the romantic, rustic ambiance of the historic Franciscan mission. Guests will unwind in the mission garden as Winemaker Yost pours Goat Bubbles sparkling wine served with appetizers. A four-course meal prepared by Chef Staub will be served in the California heritage dining room seating 40 guests. Three wines featured at the event are Orange County Fair Wine Competition award winners.

CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI) is presenting an exhibit of art created by students, faculty and community members from marine debris found on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands to highlight one of the most widespread pollution problems facing the world’s ocean and waterways.

The “Channel Islands Marine Debris Art Show” will be held Friday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. at MadeWest Brewery at 1744 Donlon St. in Ventura. The exhibit will then be viewable by appointment throughout October at the 643 Project Space at 643 N. Ventura Ave. in Ventura. A reception will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, as part of ArtsVentura’s First Friday.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Rising Star of American Music Charley Crockett, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct.2 at the Arlington Theatre

Crockett’s concert kicks off the opening week of A&L’s 2022-2023 season of performances and special events, and is followed by Ukrainian rock band Dakha Brakha, Lindy hop sensation SW!NG OUT, CNN analyst David Gergen, and more than 40 additional events.

An authentic and prolific songwriter, Crockett has released five albums of original material since 2020, culminating with September 2022’s The Man from Waco. His latest single, “I’m Just a Clown,” blends classic country craftsmanship with the soulful sounds of Memphis-style horns and reverb-drenched blues guitar.

The Ventura County Community Development Corporation (VCCDC) will be celebrating its 2nd Annual Awards Ceremony, “Leading People Home”, on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022 at Spanish Hills Club in Camarillo by honoring four individuals with prestigious named awards for their work in transforming lives through community partnerships, transformational leadership, and homeownership affordability and creation.

VCCDC’s impact of changing lives through homeownership for the last 21 years began as an operational venture by co-founders Rodney Fernandez and Bertha Garcia. In 2014, VCCDC was spun-off, becoming the only CDFI based nonprofit serving low-to-moderate income families with mortgages in the Ventura County. This year’s ceremony will highlight the honoring of three individuals and one organization whose commitments mirror VCCDC’s mission to strengthen and sustain vibrant communities by empowering individuals and families to build wealth through education and homeownership.

CBF Productions, one of California’s largest traveling festival production companies for over 13 years, announced the return of its Boots & Brews Country Music Festival with dates in Ventura, Santa Clarita, and Morgan Hills. The festival season kicks off in Ventura on August 20th withCole Swindell, followed by Brad Paisley in Santa Clarita on September 3rd. Brothers Osborne will be headlining the festival in Morgan Hills on September 10th, and awarding country music star Tim McGrawends the season on October 14th with his debut Ventura performance. UCSB Arts & Lectures (A&L) presents The Linda Lindas on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Campbell Hall. The Linda Lindas may have broken out in 2021 with their viral video, “Racist, Sexist Boy,” an original song performed at the Los Angeles Public Library, but they have been carrying on LA’s spirit of ’70s punk, power pop and new wave since 2018, sharing the stage with indie heroes like Best Coast, Bleached, Money Mark and Bikini Kill. Ranging in age from 11 to 17, half Asian/half Latinx sisters, cousins and friends Bela, Lucia, Eloise and Mila are ascending rock’s new feminist front, coolly shredding through songs about identity, friendship, power and cats.

UCSB Arts & Lectures (A&L) is thrilled to announce an evening with big wave surfer Laird Hamilton moderated by documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy on October 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Arlington Theatre. A big-wave surfer and pioneer in the world of action water sports, Laird Hamilton is a hard-charging athlete, renowned innovator and guiding genius of crossover board sports including tow-in surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and hydrofoil boarding. He is the subject of the documentary Take Every Wave, and his bestselling book Liferider tackles human resilience, relationships, business, technology, risk-taking and the importance of respecting the natural world. Explore the courage, ambition and talent that push a person to greatness in an evening with the American icon who changed the sport of big-wave surfing forever.

This year, the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara (HACSB) is honoring 17 Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program graduates on October 17, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. in the Presidio Springs community room located at 721 Laguna Street.

The Family Self Sufficiency Program (FSS) is a voluntary five (5) year program in which an Individual Training and Services Plan is developed with each participant to design a clear path of specific goals and objectives in order to achieve living wage employment and gain economic self-sufficiency. It is available to families who are part of the Section 8 Housing program.
