SANTA MARIA — Erick Pinedo-Tovar definitely understands the concepts of fairness and sharing.

That is why the graduating Pioneer Valley High School senior (in a few more days) has turned down a Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary Club scholarship. The scholarship he could have had was awarded to Amanda Tonascia of Righetti High School. She will attend Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo next year.

Pinedo-Tovar will continue his education at Cal Poly in SLO and explains to the Rotary that he had already received enough scholarships to pay for his tuition and fees when he starts studies in the fall. He was one of 18 deserving students honored by the Rotary this year.

Rotary scholarship officials said the young scholar requested his scholarship be given to another student.

“And what an amazing kid Erick is to give a gift like that,’’ said PV Principal Shanda Herrera. “We are proud of him for being so generous! We want all our kids to be like this- so impressive.”

Superintendent Antonio Garcia agreed, adding “What an incredible young man.’’

Pinedo-Tovar is the President of the Keystone Club (a Character & Leadership Development program for teens) at Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast (BGCMCC).

***

SANTA MARIA — The PVHS Peer Tutoring Program shifted to online Canvas tutoring to meet student needs during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning it recent recognition on the National Peer Tutoring Resource Center Website.

The program, which started in 2018, went online in April. Since then, it has utilized more than a dozen students to help more than 200 students. The program uses the Canvas video conference tool, which is similar to a Zoom experience.

Canvas is a learning management system for all SMJUHSD students, a one-stop portal that is used to access all classes and school information.

Panther Peer Tutoring Supervisor/School Librarian Karen Apple monitors and records each tutoring session. Coordinator/School Counselor Heidi Leal works with students and counselors in scheduling students for their tutoring sessions.

“Although, COVID 19 put a halt to many aspects of daily life, we still wanted to continue to provide some educational tutoring assistance to those students who struggle most in academics during this transition,’’ Apple said. “Learning can be much more difficult outside of the normal atmosphere and stress and apprehension can add to that. We had a great team of tutors who were willing to try something new and who wanted to continue to be employed. The program certainly enhanced all of our technology skills and it was a win – win for everyone to continue tutoring.’’

The student tutors are paid minimum wage.

CENTRAL COAST — A local art student has become a true Righetti Warrior in the battle against the COVID-19 virus while home for the last two weeks, turning her talents into sewing safety masks for family, friends and now Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

Madison (Madi) Curran started on March 21, spending her first 20 minutes learning to use the sewing machine. After that, using a pattern and instructions from a hospital source, she has been turning out six a day. She plans to work daily until the crisis fades and all masks are being donated.

“I’m incredibly proud of her,” said her art teacher Melissa Johnson. The teacher wants to share what Curran, also a school spirit leader, has undertaken as a “lovely counterbalance to all the sadness and hardship going on in the county. We have terrific students” at Righetti, she added.

The artist turned seamstress started making masks, she said, because her mother needed protection while out for essential activities, like shopping. After filling her mother’s request, she has just kept sewing, giving them to “everyone else who needs protection so we can all get back to normal and I can go back to school,” Curran said.

Johnson said that after distributing the masks to family, Curran asked her mom where else they could be given. A nurse friend of Curran’s mother suggested Cottage Hospital. Nurses there are topping their N95 safety masks with Curran’s colorful creations to keep the other masks cleaner and extend their use.

Looking down at a Brothers sewing machine, combining cloth and elastic straps, Curran said she has no end goal and just plans to “continue until this is over.”

SANTA MARIA — Fifty-five Righetti High School geology students recently earned Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) General Industry Certifications as part of the Career Technical Education (CTE) Environmental Resources Pathway.

The pathway teaches students about the environment, sustainability and agriculture along with the types of jobs they can acquire within each of these industries, according to science/geology teacher Laura Branch. The online test took 10 to 13 hours to complete.

“Once my employer found out I got my OSHA General Industry Certificate, they wanted to see my card so they could give me a dollar per hour raise since they know I am certified in safety,’’ said student Noah Rodrigues.

Branch said the certifications were paid for through CTE funds from the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District.

“Students can add the certification to their resume and that’s a win-win situation,’’ Branch added. “The students get the certification and local industries get workers who are OSHA certificated, who will be safe on the job.’’

SANTA MARIA — An atmosphere of mutual respect was created between Righetti and St. Joseph High Schools during a sportsmanship summit on Thursday.

The summit stemmed from unacceptable remarks made from the stands during a recent heated rivalry. The teachable moments took place for a few hours at each campus.

The discussion focused on restoring the relationship between the two schools and students setting up norms for future games and activities, said FBSMV Executive Edwin Weaver. Both sides also agreed to continue the healthy rivalry on the court and foster healthy relationships off the court, Weaver added. Staff from Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley facilitated the summit.

Students found the experience engaging.

“I feel like all of us really bonded and got clarity while acknowledging something was done wrong,’’ said RHS Student Alyssa Joseph. “We are ready to move past this incident and continue with a healthy rivalry.”

“The day was productive and healing and I am glad that we are moving forward as one community and not two schools,’’ said SJHS student Marlee Hernandez. “I am happy that I got to be a part of today.’’

Principals agreed.

“We feel very blessed to have the opportunity to bring our wonderful students from both schools together to continue to work and learn as a unified community,’’ said St. Joseph Principal Erinn Dougherty. “We are thankful to the students and administration of Righetti for joining us in a great, collaborative learning experience.”

SANTA MARIA — Films created by Righetti High School artists, using both traditional and state-of-the-art digital technology, were recently shown at the Central Coast Film Society’s Student Film Competition in San Luis Obispo.

Nine of the 17 films in the festival came from Righetti. The films actually were created during the fall semester and had to meet special criteria: two characters, one location, three minutes in length and a “digital distraction” concept. Some students made funny films while others made them dramatic.

“Through this process students are getting hands-on experience learning skills they can use to enter the film industry,’’ said film teacher Jacob R. Gustafson. “They use industry-standard technology and learn 21st Century skills like collaboration, creativity, communication, and technological literacy. I’m very proud of my students for taking the work seriously and performing at a professional level on this project.”

The students started the process by forming into groups, brainstorming a concept and writing a screenplay including the dialogue. Then, they had to storyboard every shot of the film, shoot cameras, edit their films using Adobe Premiere – which is industry-standard editing software and also used at seven of the 10 universities in California that have a film program. Students finished by creating an account with Film Freeway, which is the industry-standard way of submitting films to professional film festivals, and filling out technical information about the film, uploading their film to the service and submitting it.

Students are Righetti come from a diverse array of cultures and backgrounds and it is imperative that we create experiences on campus that acknowledge everyone. I feel so fortunate to be surrounded by a community of students that recognizes the value of traditions and culture. Their curiosity to learn more about their heritage, history and family background inspires me daily. It is with much honor and respect that I support and work with our students to put on another Día de los Muertos rally for our school community.’’

Students are more than ready for the cultural activity.

“I want to show our culture and how amazing and colorful it is. I also want to share with others a tradition that is growing and is being celebrated by the generations of today. It is especially important to celebrate a tradition that has been passed down to me by my ancestors.” – Julie Magaña, 12th grade

“I’m excited to be able to demonstrate my culture to the whole school. Sharing our traditions and simply expressing ourselves the way we know how to.” – Jorge Pérez, 12th grade

SANTA MARIA — Righetti High School seniors started to take charge of their futures during the Reach Higher Academy that kicked off on Wednesday, September 25.

The Academy, which will involve several sessions, wrap up Oct. 30, as part of former First Lady’s Reach Higher Initiative. It’s an effort to inspire every student in America to complete her/his education beyond high school, whether at a professional training program, community college or four-year college or university.

Specialized sessions feature: Why Community College is an option for you? (AHC), Major to Career (Cal Poly, SLO), We all have a story, what’s yours? (UCSB/EAOP), Time is money! (Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara).

Nearly 180 students participated in the first orientation.

“The academy will bring important college and career readiness experience to our students by engaging them in interactive sessions while connecting them with key community partners,’’ Warrior School Counselor Eric Blanco said.

The application process will begin for both two and four-year colleges/universities during this time; therefore, timely information will be given, Blanco added.

Miranda Angulo (12th grader) – “It was nice to be in a room full of other seniors who have similar goals as me. This made the environment more comfortable to be in.”

Rebekah Whitten (12th grader) – “This morning’s kick-off was a great way to start the Reach Higher Academy. It was a good mixture of preparing us for what is to come and we had a fun start. I am also very excited that we are being put into groups tailored to us, which will help the experience be more personal and thorough.”

The event was organized by the student group Latinos Unidos and starts about 11:20 a.m. at the Greek Theater. It will feature traditional music, dance and song. Students and staff also plan dress up and face paint colorful skulls, flowers and other Day of the Dead motifs.

“This tradition dates to the Aztecs in Mexico who celebrated the lives of the deceased with food, drinks and activities that the deceased enjoyed in life,’’ said Warrior Spanish/Ethnic & Gender Studies Teacher and Lations Unidos Advisor Patricia Villalobos. “Día de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a type of continuum in the cycle of life.

It is especially important to celebrate a tradition that has been passed down to me by my ancestors.” – Julie Magaña, 12thgrade

“I’m excited to be able to demonstrate my culture to the whole school. Sharing our traditions and simply expressing ourselves the way we know how to.” – Jorge Pérez, 12th grade

SANTA MARIA — The Good Samaritan Shelter now has a new barbecue to feed the needy thanks to an Eagle Scout Project by Righetti freshman and Troop 95 Orcutt Boy Scout Alex Andrade.

The dedication and the first barbecue for more than 300 people is scheduled for noon on Saturday, May 11. Andrade started work last August and raised $1,500 and had the rest of the materials needed to build it donated.

It will help the shelter and other volunteer groups prepare about 3,000 meals each week, mostly with donated food.

“Mission complete,’’ Andrade said. “I hope everyone gets really full and happy. Like I said before, my family and I enjoy barbecue at home and it’s always a great family time. I hope this project creates the same experience for the less fortunate.’’

Good Sam Volunteer Outreach Coordinator David Bickham cannot wait.

“The barbecue is going to bring a sense of community and friendship,’’ Bickham said. “We are very excited.’’

Community Action Commission Kitchen Supervisor Corey Burkhardt, one of about 40 groups prepares food at the site, agreed.

“It going to be such a treat to provide a Santa Maria style meat to those in need in our community,’’ Burkhardt said.
