After hosting more than 22,000 community members back to Alameda Park for the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival at the end of April — the first time since 2019 — CEO Sigrid Wright announced today the success of CEC’s 50th Anniversary Protect Our Climate Campaign. Over $16.97 million was pledged to immediately tackle the urgent threat of climate change on the Central Coast, exceeding the $15 million goal.

Inspired by CEC’s proven reputation for developing and scaling innovative local solutions to complex problems, over 300 donors pledged $16.97 million to reverse and repair from climate change in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Of this, roughly $10.25 million is funding a growth sprint of CEC’s climate programs and the build-out of an innovative Environmental Hub in downtown Santa Barbara. The remaining pledges — about $6.75 million — will be fulfilled in coming decades through long-term legacy gifts, ensuring the future sustainability of the organization. The unexpectedly strong support shown by donors making legacy commitments in their estate plans led to the campaign surpassing its goal. View a complete list of campaign contributors here.

“Central Coast donors made it clear that they are deeply concerned about climate change and resonated with CEC’s message of hopeful action,” said Jon Clark, President, James S. Bower Foundation. “CEC thinks big and thinks long-term, and the organization demonstrates results over and over again.”

There were several foundations and individuals who made $1 million-plus donations to the campaign: James S. Bower Foundation, Patricia & Paul Bragg Foundation, Karen and John Jostes, and Zegar Family Foundation.

In addition, the following investors made gifts of $250,000 and above: Sheila and Tom Cullen, Katie Davis, Hutton Parker Foundation, Jean Kaplan, Dorothy Largay and Wayne Rosing, Natalie Orfalea Foundation, Paul Relis and Fanny Pearce, Sea Forward Fund, Judy Stapelmann, Michel Saint-Sulpice, Suzanne and John Steed, Yardi Systems, and Anonymous.A cornerstone of the campaign was the creation of the first-of-its kind Environmental Hub — centrally located on Santa Barbara’s State Street. CEC’s new Environmental Hub is a 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility designed to be an epicenter for community activism, education, entrepreneurship, media, and art. A Grand Opening community celebration will take place on Thursday, July 6, at 5:30 p.m. as a part of downtown Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursday Art Walk.

In addition, the campaign, which launched in 2021, kickstarted CEC’s five-year effort to accelerate regional climate solutions through climate justice, regional and state policy, climate resilience, climate smart agriculture, a new Climate Stewards certification program, and other programs.

“We are incredibly inspired by our community, which understands the pivotal moment we are in and sees CEC as a beacon of hope for protecting the Central Coast,” said CEO Sigrid Wright. “By investing the funds as we’ve raised them, we’ve been able to double down with some incredibly bold goals – meaning that we’ve doubled staff, doubled programming, and expanded our geographic reach.”

The campaign was led by a Steering Committee chaired by Jon Clark, President, James S. Bower Foundation, and Merryl & Chuck Zegar of the Zegar Family Foundation. Committee members included: Dennis Allen, Mary Becker, Leslie Bhutani, Emily Engel, Laura Francis, Carolyn Fitzgerald, Karl Hutterer, David Jackson, Pat McElroy, Maryanne Mott, Charles Newman, Matt Riley, Lisa Murphy Rivas, Ken Saxon, and Sigrid Wright.

About the Community Environmental Council (CEC) — CEC advances rapid and equitable solutions to the climate crisis – including ambitious zero carbon goals, drawdown of excess carbon, and protection against the impacts of climate change. CEC was recognized as a 2020 California Nonprofit of the Year and a City of Santa Barbara Climate Hero, and is led by CEO Sigrid Wright who was recently named 2022 Congressional Woman of the Year. When temperatures rise, home electricity use skyrockets. The average U.S. homeowner spends $121 per month on electricity, and in California that amount is even higher—particularly during extreme heat events when air conditioning and refrigeration use ramp up. By transitioning to highly efficient all-electric homes we can reduce the cost to homeowners and avoid compounding climate impacts.

On Tuesday, June 27, the Community Environmental Council (CEC) will host a free, interactive webinar, offered in English and Spanish, from 12 to 1:15 p.m. PST that will review the tax credits and incentive programs available to make going electric affordable, and describe how homeowners can combine these financial incentives to make their homes more efficient and climate friendly. Participants will also learn how to access CEC’s newElectrify Your Life service, which walks individuals through the process of determining their eligibility and applying for financial incentives.

Dr. Leah Stokes, a featured speaker for the webinar and Anton Vonk Associate Professor of Environmental Politics at UC Santa Barbara, emphasized the importance of this topic. “The fires in Canada and orange skies across the East Coast last week are proof that climate action cannot wait. One of the most powerful actions we can take is to electrify our lives, running our homes on machines powered by clean electricity,” she said. Stokes will cover how households can take advantage of game-changing credits and rebates in the Inflation Reduction Act to go all-electric, and how to build a personal electrification plan and calculate energy bill and emissions savings with Rewiring America, where she also serves as a senior policy consultant.

In addition to Stokes, webinar speakers include Michael Forrester, Acting Principal Deputy Director at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of State and Community Energy Programs; and Juan Lares, Energy & Transportation Associate at the Community Environmental Council. The event is hosted by CEC’s Executive Director, Sigrid Wright.

“Not all homeowners realize the variety of federal, state, and local tax credits and incentive programs that are available and can help make going electric affordable,” said Forrester. “The Community Environmental Council’s Electrify Your Life service is filling a much-needed role by providing one-on-one assistance to help make going all-electric approachable and accessible for California Central Coast residents.”

From electric vehicles and plug-in charging to home heat pumps and all-electric appliances, the Community Environmental Council’s Electrify Your Life service provides one-on-one assistance to single-family homeowners, property managers, businesses, and nonprofits to help make the switch to cleaner energy more cost-effective.

“Electrify Your Life is helping single-family homeowners, multifamily property managers, and businesses on the Central Coast move away from gasoline and natural gas as quickly as possible,” said Cameron Gray, CEC’s Director of Climate Mitigation. “Offered in English and Spanish, the service provides an accessible climate solution that will accelerate our transition to all-electric homes and buildings so we can keep pace with the unprecedented rate of climate change.”

Electrify Your Life is part of a broader effort by CEC and its collaborators to address climate change impacts by rapidly moving the Central Coast to 100% renewable electricity that powers our homes, businesses, and cars from clean sources. CEC’s programs ensure local communities are taking strong actions to develop innovative, equitable, and replicable programs that serve as a beacon for other regions.

The Plastic Free July movement is an annual reminder that individuals can play an important role in the solution to plastic pollution. Since the movement’s inception in 2010, over 100 million people in 190 countries have pledged to refuse single-use plastics in July (and beyond).

During the month of July, the Community Environmental Council (CEC) and its partners are hosting several events focused on building awareness about the impacts of plastic pollution and how we can take steps to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics.

“We must continue our efforts to reduce plastic waste and move us toward a circular system in which packaging is a service instead of a product. This will save valuable resources and reduce climate emissions caused by plastic production,” said CEC’s Director of Leadership & Education, Kathi King. “That’s why we are proud of the role we played in successfully advocating for a comprehensive plastic reduction law in the City of Goleta and supporting SB 54, a landmark statewide regulation that requires manufacturers to take responsibility for their packaging and to significantly increase recycling percentages by 2032. And there is more work to be done.”

A trivia night on July 12, hosted by Boone Graphics, will benefit the Community Environmental Council and feature trivia questions about plastic pollution, recycling, and sustainability. Boone Graphics has partnered with SB Biergarten to produce a weekly Trivia Night to help bring awareness and support to nonprofits throughout the Central Coast.

California communities alone spend more than $428 million annually to clean up and manage plastic pollution. Fortunately, the State of California, and the Central Coast region in particular, has become a leader in preventing ocean plastic pollution by passing bans on single-use plastics and enforcing stricter requirements for plastic producers.

On Thursday, July 20 from 12-1:15 p.m. CEC will host a free webinar, Plastic Free July: How You Can Reduce Waste to Make a Lasting Impact, in English with Spanish interpretation. Speakers will share what local organizations are doing to reduce distribution of single-use plastic items in our region—and how the public can get involved. The webinar features Lindsay Johnson, Executive Director at Explore Ecology; Mac Sellars, Manager of Partnerships at rCup, America’s #1 reuse platform; Kiersten Ozhelevskiy, Owner, Sunkissed Pantry, a refill and zero waste shop in Santa Barbara; and Sarah Palladino, Sr. Mgr. of People, Planet and Community, Toad&Co.

On Thursday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. CEC and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper will present the second annual Plastic Free July Expo, held at CEC’s brand new Environmental Hub at 1219 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. This in-person event features a number of local partners—including Heal the Ocean, City of Santa Barbara Recycling, City of Goleta, and Marborg Industries—who will share about reducing plastic waste and making sustainable choices. Participants will learn about eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics and discover ways to reduce their plastic use through games, interactive booths, and more. Space is limited, so RSVPs are strongly encouraged.

In addition to policy advocacy and outreach work focused on zero-waste efforts, CEC takes local action. In 2022, CEC led the effort to install eight public water stations in the City of Santa Barbara, bringing the total to 123 bottle filling hydration stations in schools, parks, and public spaces throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties—saving over seven million single-use plastic bottles from reaching landfills. In addition, CEC recently worked with the El Gato Channel Foundation to provide two new refill stations: one at the Stevens Park trail head, and one at Oak Park on West Junipero Street.

About The Community Environmental Council — CEC advances rapid and equitable solutions to the climate crisis – including ambitious zero carbon goals, drawdown of excess carbon, and protection against the impacts of climate change. CEC was recognized as a 2020 California Nonprofit of the Year and a City of Santa Barbara Climate Hero, and is led by CEO Sigrid Wright who was recently named 2022 Congressional Woman of the Year. CEC has worked since 1970 to incubate and innovate real life environmental solutions that directly affect the California Central Coast. Our programs lead to clean vehicles, solar energy, resilient food systems and reduction of single-use plastic. Learn more about the work of CEC and why it receives high ratings from both Charity Navigator and Guidestar at CECSB.org/impact. Find CEC on the web at CECSB.org and on Facebook.com/CECSB, Instagram.com/CEC_SB, Twitter.com/CECSB, and Linkedin.com/company/cecsb

***

People, Planet and Community, Toad&Co.

Holly Becker’s documentary, “Arresting Science” follows Dr. Peter Kalmus, an impassioned climate scientist, who commits his first act of civil disobedience in downtown Los Angeles. Historically, scientists have been neutral and data-driven, but the climate emergency has forced him and some colleagues out of their labs and into the streets. LAPD responds to the protest en masse. Dr. Kalmus emerges even more determined to take on the system and inspire change.

Following the screening, engage in a lively panel featuring climate activist Steven Starr from the film, climate scientist Peter Kalmus (via video), filmmaker Holly Becker and UCSB professor emerita Catherine Gautier. This event is free and space is limited.

In response to today’s Supreme Court ruling on the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to broadly regulate carbon emissions from existing power plants, Community Environmental Council CEO/Executive Director, Sigrid Wright released this statement:

“The Supreme Court's decision is out-of-touch with science and the values that the vast majority of Americans share. It puts polluters ahead of people. Fortunately, we are not relying on or waiting for national policy, as we painfully learned during the last Administration.
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Planned Parenthood California Central Coast celebrated its first solar electric system at its San Luis Obispo health center, as part of a regional plan to increase its reliance on renewable energy sources. The system is expected to net $250,000 in financial savings over the next 30 years. The project was part of CEC’s Solarize Nonprofit program and was made possible by support from Asteri Solar.

CEC’s Solarize Nonprofit pilot program is designed to help local nonprofits go solar and run off renewable energy without an upfront cost. The program grew out of CEC’s residential Solarize program, which has helped 858 homeowners go solar. The installation at Planned Parenthood was completed in partnership with CEC, funded by Asteri Solar, and installed by local company Solarponics Energy Management Systems.

Planned Parenthood California Central Coast is the seventh nonprofit to complete installation through the program, following the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Central Coast–Santa Maria Campus, Santa Barbara Rescue Mission, the Sea Center in Santa Barbara, and the Wildling Museum in Solvang.

PPCCC President & CEO Jenna Tosh said, “Going solar has been a goal of ours for years. We are so grateful for the partnership of CEC and Asteri Solar who helped us make this possible.”

“Supporting Planned Parenthood California Central Coast’s transition to solar power is one more important step toward moving our entire region to renewable energy,” noted CEC Energy Projects Manager Danny Ettelson.

The move was lauded by former San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon. Harmon said, “Protecting our planet and protecting the health of our communities are inextricably linked. I am excited to see Planned Parenthood – an organization that protects the reproductive health of people in San Luis Obispo – show leadership to protect our planet.”

The solar project is part of an organization-wide effort at Planned Parenthood California Central Coast to be more environmentally sustainable. PPCCC also launched a food scraps composting program at its Santa Barbara location this year and plans to implement solar energy at its health centers in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

Asteri Solar launched in 2018 to support the community through impact investing in solar for nonprofit organizations.

While Solarize Nonprofit has already identified several nonprofits for funding through the pilot, there may be additional capacity for the program. Eligible nonprofits must own their buildings or be in long-term leases and have facilities suitable for solar. Nonprofits may apply at cec.pub/solarize-nonprofit.

SANTA BARBARA — The Community Environmental Council (CEC) and Electric Drive 805 coalition partners are proud to sponsor a variety of free, in-person and virtual events leading up to and throughout National Drive Electric Week through October 2, 2021. The public is invited to learn about the wide range of electric vehicles (EVs) that can fit most every lifestyle and budget.

National Drive Electric Week is a nationwide celebration to help the U.S. transition rapidly and equitably to cleaner transportation that protects communities from pollution and worsening climate change impacts. Current emission and pollution statistics are behind California’s push to have five million zero-emission vehicles on the roads by 2030 and 100% zero-emission car sales by 2035.

“The most recent IPCC report states explicitly that humans are the cause for the rise in Earth’s temperature,” stated Michael Chiacos, CEC Climate and Energy Program Director, who has driven an electric car since 2012. “Transportation is the leading cause of greenhouse gas in California, so driving less and switching to electric is critical to meeting state and local climate goals – and ultimately creating a liveable climate and sustainable world.”

These events will also spread the message that electric vehicles are for everyone, regardless of income level due to increased incentives available for eligible low-to-moderate income households. “EVs can save people hundreds of dollars a month on transportation costs, especially when they can utilize local and state EV incentives,” commented Jen Hernández, CEC’s Energy & Climate Associate who recently used incentives to get her own clean vehicle. Speaking to why more people do not take advantage of the incentives, Hernández noted, “Until you start to do the research about potential savings and see EV options that are available, it is not always clear how an EV can fit your lifestyle and budget.”

Here is a current list of incentives, with additional state funding anticipated later in 2021 or early 2022:

About the Community Environmental Council (CEC)

Recognized as a 2020 California Nonprofit of the Year and 2020 City of Santa Barbara Climate Hero, CEC has worked since 1970 to incubate and innovate real life environmental solutions that directly affect the California Central Coast. Our current work advances rapid and equitable solutions to the climate crisis – including ambitious zero carbon goals, drawdown of excess carbon, and protection against the impacts of climate change. Our programs lead to clean vehicles, solar energy, resilient food systems and reduction of single-use plastic.
