Oct. 2 — Triunfo Water & Sanitation District Offers Free Workshop On Drip Irrigation at Mae Boyer Park

Triunfo Water & Sanitation District is sponsoring a free, hands-on workshop on drip irrigation Saturday, October 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Mae Boyar Park (130 Kanan Road in Oak Park). The class is free and open to the public, although priority registration will be given to customers of Triunfo Water & Sanitation District.

Workshop instructors are from the University of California Master Gardeners of Ventura County. Participants will learn the benefits of drip irrigation, review the required components, and assemble a drip system that they can recreate in their own landscape. Everyone will take home a detailed guidebook as well.

MCASB is pleased to present a culminating exhibition of the Light Elephant on view from September 23 – October 3, 2021. The Light Elephant is a “site reflective” inflatable public art program composed of a series of temporary installations within Downtown Santa Barbara in coordination with a sustained social media campaign.

Throughout the Summer of 2021, UCSB Professors and Artists Iman Djouini & Jonathan Taube directed a team of students to install this large-scale public artwork in dozens of sites in Downtown Santa Barbara. Through its installation and workshops, this project attempts to memorialize the stories of Downtown Santa Barbara art and culture from a decolonial perspective, as we start to turn the corner and re-engage with our public space.

Compassionate Care of Carpinteria (CCC) will hold their 3rd Annual The Light Shines Ahead virtual event on Wednesday, October 6 from 6:00-7:00 P.M. PDT. The event will be free and will featurePh.D., nonprofit leader, adventure seeker, and author of My Wild and Precious Life, Cynder Sinclair as their keynote speaker.

Cynder will deliver an uplifting presentation of her life’s journey and how Hospice of Santa Barbara eased her grief after her father’s sudden death and provided support to her entire family while her son was dying of cancer and after his death. She is an inspiration to be a light in the darkness.

Oct. 9 — Grammy-winner Ted Nash leads SBCC composers in concert at Museum of Art

Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Ted Nash will lead a group of Santa Barbara City College musicians in a concert of original music on the front terrace of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Oct. 9 at 2:30 p.m. The pieces are all inspired by or are musical interpretations of works of art from the museum’s collection.

The concert, “Ted Nash: The Sound of Art,” will share the creative accomplishments made by the SBCC New World Jazz Ensemble during a workshop held in September. As part of his two-week stay as a Santa Barbara Museum of Art Artist in Residence, Nash led the group through a unique composition process using works of art as inspirations for new musical compositions.

Oct. 9 — Neon Night Art Show and Sale Combines Artistic Styles of Chris Gocong and Rod Lathim

Neon Night Art Show and Sale is a new art collaboration featuring the artistic styles of Santa Barbara locals Chris Gocong and Rod Lathim. This collaboration combines Gocong and Lathim’s use of neon, light and matter to create nontraditional art pieces. This will be the first of a series of collaborations between two artists in Santa Barbara.

Chris Gocong is a visual artist with a passion for capturing emotion through portraiture, figurative art and abstraction. His work is mainly inspired by the commonality of human emotion and consciousness.

He came to find art as a creative outlet and meditative practice after retiring from a career in the NFL.

Led by Grammy-winning pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill, the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is heralded as “one of the best jazz orchestras in existence” by The New Yorker. The Moorpark College Theatre Arts Department is proud to present live theatre with “Nell Gwynn,” a comedy that chronicles the true story of the play’s namesake, a prostitute turned orange-seller who becomes the mistress of King Charles II in 17th century London. The play runs Oct. 7 – 17, with matinee, evening and live streaming performances.

After much discussion and adhering to COVID-19 safety guidelines, the department received approval to perform the play in a parking garage on the Moorpark College campus, creating an indoor-outdoor theatre.

“This decision to perform in a parking garage was not easy, and it has presented many challenges. But with those challenges have come unexpected triumphs,” said Suzanne Fagan, who teaches in Moorpark College’s Theatre Arts Department and directs the show. “Though we are not performing it in a traditional theatre, the play,

Workshops are scheduled for Oct. 23, and will be in-person or by Zoom, depending on the campus (details below). Students can drop in anytime during the workshops and attend any campus workshop.

Bilingual financial aid staff will assist students in completing applications for the 2022-2023 school-year FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). Oct. 23, 24 — Revival of KISMET Musical Includes Diverse and Culturally Authentic Cast from Both Coasts

Kismet musical is quickly approaching and will have a “three performances” run at the Granada Theatre on Saturday, October 23, at 2:30 and 7:30 pm and on Sunday, October 24, at 2:30 pm. Casting Director Peter Van Dam and associate Afsheen Misaghi assembled a diverse cast from both coasts. Having a talented and culturally appropriate cast was a top priority and selected with purpose. Director Lonny Price says, “This production provides the perfect opportunity to contemporize and authentically represent KISMET. I am so happy to say, I think this may be the most authentic cast to play this show, ever!” Cultural consultant Naila Al-Atrash (Professor of Arabic Theater and Film, NYU) helped ensure accurate representation of the Middle Eastern inspired world.

The Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College is pleased to present “Planet Earth,” a group exhibition by three artists — Sarah Rosalena Brady, Mark Churchill and Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales — who integrate different concepts of land in their work. The word “land” can have many implications. As a noun, it can refer to territory, soil, rural areas, real estate, as well as nations, provinces and kingdoms. As a verb, it can mean to alight, dock, moor or touch down as well as to bring on, settle, acquire or inflict. Of course, the antonym of land is sea, and the title of the show is inspired by our planet’s serendipitous combination of both these elements along with atmosphere, air and sky. As we desperately search and yearn for solutions to the ongoing climate crisis, the fear and uncertainty created leads us to look both inward and outward for answers. And as we look to other places within our current reach such as the moon or Mars for resolutions it is important to remember and embrace the absolute habitat we already have at hand as a lesson to our past and inevitable futures. All three artists in Planet Earth explore these themes in their work in unique and compelling ways.

The recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, Vjiay Gupta is a celebrated violinist, speaker and citizen artist devoted to creating spaces of wholeness through music. He is the founder of Street Symphony, an L.A.-based nonprofit that brings music to homeless and incarcerated communities, and co-founder of the Skid Row Arts Alliance. Gupta has performed as a recitalist, soloist, chamber and orchestral musician for over 20 years, and his TED Talk, “Music is Medicine, Music is Sanity,” has garnered millions of views.

Oct. 30-31 — ‘Boo at the Zoo’ Offers No Tricks, Just Treats

America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College turns wildly spooktacular on Oct. 30 and 31 for “Boo at the Zoo,” the annual Halloween-themed event that features animal shows, costume parades, prizes and treats for kids.

For the family-fun event, the Zoo will be draped in decorations, and people of all ages can closely view the more than 100 animals cared for at the Zoo. Each child wearing a costume will receive a zoo-themed bingo card upon entry. Each square of the card represents a trick-or-treat station where the child can receive candy or a treat.

“Our guests look forward to our family-friendly Halloween event each year, and we have the best one around!” said Zoo Operations Assistant Kris Romero. “We have more and more local families discovering this gem of a Zoo in their own backyard, and we have new animals and new animal habitats for the community to discover.”

Warrior Women chronicles the lifelong work of Madonna Thunder Hawk – a leader in the American Indian Movement – and Marcella Gilbert, a Lakota mother and daughter whose fight for Indigenous rights began in the late 1960s and continues to this day. Through their story, the award-winning documentary explores what it means to balance a movement with motherhood and how activist legacies are passed from generation to generation. El Cachivache defines itself as Tango Punk playing at the fringe of traditional tango and yet, in their new voice and sound one can hear the unmistakable sound of true tango, Buenos Aires Tango. Made up of four musicians, they encourage everybody, tangueros or not, to get on the dance floor and feel what it is like to move “al compas de un tango” (to the tango beat). Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation (PCVF) is pleased to announce the 24th Annual Military Ball to honor local veterans and active duty service members. The ball will be held Saturday, November 6th from 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. The event will feature special guest speaker Francis Gary Powers Jr, an author, historian and lecturer.

The Military Ball is a formal event where attendees can connect and celebrate during a lively evening complete with an evening of live music, cocktail hour, silent auction, gourmet three-course dinner and dancing. Guests will also have a chance to shop in PCVF’s GI Bag pop-up shop. GI Bags are individually crafted handbags and totes from donated upcycled military uniforms.

In this presentation, Dr. Glen Wharton discusses his three-year collaboration with residents in a semi-rural Hawaiian community to research the material and social history of the Kamehameha I sculpture on the Big Island, leading to a community decision about whether to gold leaf or paint it.

Mayor John Zaragoza and District 3 Councilmember Oscar Madrigal invite community members to participate in La Colonia’s Alley Beautification Event on Saturday, November 6th from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. as part of a volunteer clean up effort targeting the neighborhood’s alleys.

Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. at the Ramona Elementary School between North Bonita Avenue and East 1st Street. During the check-in process, the City of Oxnard staff will provide clean up equipment and waste bags to all event volunteers.

The County of Ventura Planning Division will host a community meeting on a permit application for a Wastewater Treatment Facility. The meeting will take place on November 8, 2021 at 6:00 pm at the Santa Paula Community Center located at 530 W. Main Street in Santa Paula.

RI-NU Services, LLC has requested to update and reestablish a Conditional Use Permit to operate a wastewater treatment facility at 815 Mission Rock Road. This facility would continue to accept wastewater, such as, but not limited to, porta-potty waste, septic tank waste, and oilfield wastewater. The wastewater would be treated onsite to separate solids and liquids, consolidated and then trucked to off-site permitted disposal facilities.
