United Way is Now Accepting Applications for Local Students and Fun in the Sun Staff
SANTA BARBARA — United Way of Santa Barbara County’s (UWSBC) annual Fun in the Sun (FITS) summer learning program returns June 21st through July 30th and is now accepting applications for staff and local students to participate. The free six week program will address summer learning loss and COVID-19 learning loss through academic and social emotional programming.
UWSBC is anticipating an in-person program at all six sites depending on COVID-19 mandates. Students will engage in academic rotations focused on literacy and STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, arts and math) as well as participate in social, emotional and mental wellness activities. Should COVID-19 conditions worsen, UWSBC will provide a virtual program.
FITS is Santa Barbara County’s oldest and largest public/private partnership dedicated to long-term educational improvement in the lives of low-income children and families. FITS provides hands-on, project-based lessons, utilizing the best services and ideas from 80+ local public and private organizations.
“We are so grateful that we can continue to support students and their families through our annual Fun in the Sun program, especially those who have experienced learning loss from COVID-19,” said Steve Ortiz, President & CEO of United Way of Santa Barbara County. “It is so important that students have extra learning support especially during these difficult times.”
