SANTA MARIA — One penny piled upon another added up to a nice donation for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, thanks to the Santa Maria High School Associated Student Body (ASB).

The leadership students raised $3,943 during their “Pennies for Patients” community service project, according to Saint Activity Director Adrian Salazar.

To accomplish their goal, the students decorated penny donation boxes for every classroom, collected on campus during lunch and breaks, made bulletin announcements and walked around selected neighborhoods.

“This is my second year leading this event, and I could not be any more excited with the results,’’ said senior Fernando Gonzales. “We worked really hard to educate and promote the event. The rain made it challenging but nothing was stopping us from reaching our $3,000 goal.”

“Leaders do this kind of stuff, because we like to help others,’’ said senior and ASB President Cristy Delgado. “I hope that one day we a cure for cancer is made and we don’t have to do this anymore. But, in the meantime, I hope the next group of leaders continue supporting “Pennies for Patients” campaign.”
